1881
During a time of hardship for the Company, including bankruptcy and a devastating fire, Bacardi is awarded its first medal at the Industrial
& Agricultural Fair in Matanzas, Cuba. Nearly three decades later, Bacardi became Cuba’s first multinational company.
1888
Bacardi wins a gold medal at the Barcelona Exposition and Queen María Cristina of Spain appoints the Company the title of “Purveyors to
the Royal Household.” With its royal designation and international awards, BACARDÍ rum becomes known as “The King of Rums and the Rum
of Kings.”
1889
Bacardi wins a gold medal at the World’s Fair in Paris where the Coffey still, also known as a column or continuous still, is on exhibit.
Soon after, Bacardi purchases the still which allows for increased production while retaining the high quality standards of founder Facundo
Bacardí Massó.
1893
Bacardi wins a gold medal at the World’s Fair in Chicago and attracts visitors from around the world to its exhibit
booth, which evokes the spirit of the Caribbean by showcasing hand-made replicas of BACARDÍ rum bottles,
bats, and ox drawn carts filled with sugarcane bundles.
1895
Bacardi wins a Diploma of Honor at the Bordeaux Exposition. A few years later, Jennings S. Cox, an American
engineer stationed at the DaiquirÍ mines in Cuba, concocts the original BACARDÍ DaiquirÍ, a refreshing cocktail
of limes, sugar, crushed ice, and BACARDÍ rum.
1900
Bacardi wins a gold medal at the World’s Fair in Paris the same year the original BACARDÍ Cuba Libre is born.
A group of American soldiers in Havana are served a cocktail of BACARDÍ rum, Coca-Cola® and a squeeze of
lime and toast to a “Cuba Libre” or “Free Cuba.”
1901
Bacardi wins a gold medal at the World’s Fair in Buffalo, and the son of the founder of BACARDÍ is
appointed the first Cuban born Mayor of Santiago de Cuba. As a dedicated public servant, he supports
the city’s annual carnival that becomes renowned for its parades and legendary BACARDÍ cocktails.
1904
Bacardi wins a grand prize at the World’s Fair in St. Louis while the United States-led construction of the
Panama Canal begins. Decades later, the completed canal becomes a key route for distribution of
BACARDÍ rum which today is available in more than 150 markets world-wide.
1915
Bacardi wins a Diploma of Honor at the World’s Fair in San Francisco and begins a well-timed
expansion of the original tin-roof distillery in Cuba. Five years later, the United States enacts Prohibition
and thirsty American tourists flock to Cuba to enjoy BACARDÍ cocktails.
