Trojan Times 2012 February Edition Solo and Ensemble Contest Kathryn Ausema Contents: CMS News * Solo/Ensemble * Love-Sense * Elevator Fun A Talk with Mr. Garwood TalentAnonymous Arts & Crafts Trapped-Dunnett Color Game Book Review Movie Review Website Review Sentence Game Recipes Comic Every year CMS music students participate in the optional Solo and Ensemble Contest. Many people don’t fully know what Solo and Ensemble Contest is, so I wanted to share with you since I have participated two years already. Let’s get started! Solo and Ensemble Contest is like a sports tournament for young musicians. The main purpose of Solo and Ensemble is to hear suggestions and comments on your work from professionals, so you know how to improve and play better next time and all the time. If you were a student participating in Solo and Ensemble, you would pick a piece of music to start playing on your instrument, either on your own as a solo or with a group of other musicians in an ensemble. Many students start working on this music one or two months ahead of contest. Next you would choose what group you want to play in, AKA what difficulty level you want to be judged at. There are four groups. Four being easiest level and one being the hardest. On the day of contest, you will be judged and rated on different levels based on how you play the song you chose, what group you chose to play in, and the judge that is scheduled to listen to you play. You will be judged on different levels. The four levels are gold at best, silver as second, bronze third, and participation is fourth. The judge that listens to you is a professional musician, and has had experience in music somewhere or another. The purpose of having a professional listen to you is to tell you how you can improve on your playing, and whatever they think you should work on to improve your musicianship. The judge is only there for that purpose, not to place you in ranks compared to other musicians. After you play your music and are judged on it, you should reflect on how you played your song, and hopefully celebrate. What the judge has to say about your one song could be applied to many other ones you play in the future, so try to take what he/she said seriously. Now that you’ve seen what Solo and Ensemble Contest is really about, try to take interest in others work. Maybe next year you could attend a few of your friend’s solos or ensembles. I hope you fully understand what the music department at CMS has been working so hard on for the past month or so! A Talk with Mr. Garwood A Talk with Mr. Garwood By: Saira Nelson, Hailey Hickey, Celeste Coughlin, and Bree Tanner This month’s featured teacher is Mr. Garwood. Some of you may not know that Mr. Garwood grew up on a farm in Iowa, and had 4 sisters! His very first job was delivering newspapers on a newspaper route. He saved 3 years of his paychecks to pay for his first semester of college. That is persistence! Valparaiso University was Mr. Garwood’s school of choice. He wanted to be a geography teacher, because middle school was one of his favorite memories, and he loved his geography teacher, Mr. Pedersen. He started teaching in 1973, as a middle school teacher at Westchester Middle School. Mr. Garwood enjoys traveling, and has been to several different countries. His favorite place to travel is Greece. Superman is his favorite superhero, peppermint is his favorite ice cream, and OBVIOUSLY his favorite job is AND always will be … TEACHING!!!!!! After interviewing some of Mr. Garwood’s past and present students, we learned some interesting tidbits. Mr. Garwood has class team competitions to increase students’ study skills for tests. He cooks for the winning class that has the highest points. It is also fun because if he is teaching about South East Asia, then that is the type of food he cooks for us. “My class won last month, so Mr. Garwood is cooking for us next.” -Kendal He is nice and gives us candy when we behave for subs.-Fionna Mr. Garwood would have random knowledge and go off about his own explorations.-Jeremy N. We liked the story about Mr. Garwood walking a certain girl home (in first grade.) -Chase and Spencer Mr. Garwood’s favorite word of all time: “MMMK” -Hailey and Saira Talent Author, Anonymous Come, if you’re one of us! 3:30 P.M. – 5:00 P.M. We will protect our kind from them. It wasn’t vague, even to those who didn’t know or care. It could be a flyer for………….. I couldn’t think of anything. These people should learn a bit of discretion- unless it was handed out to those who knew others who could pass it along….. That answer was more sensible. I wondered if my parents would let me go. They’ll let you; Maddy says they want you to get out more. “Get out of my head,” I grumbled, earning a strange look from a passing customer. I tried to mentally glare at Heather. All my efforts gave me was the sound of Heather laughing. Of course, the sound was irresistible, and I laughed along, hoping I didn’t scare off the customers. I crumpled the flyer in my hand and dumped it in the trash. Our kind….. My kind…….. There were more of us, out there somewhere. I tapped my foot on the ground nervously. A cold gust of wind twirled through the trees, some now turning brown and dead, while dark clouds threatened overhead. On the one day I wore a skirt………. I rubbed my arms, wishing I had worn something warmer. I could change the weather with ease…… I glanced around the small middle school parking lot. Matt had stopped me in the hall and told me they would meet me here. I wished they would hurry up. I glanced again at the clouds, longing to change them. They were boiling with chaos, begging me to turn them into something new and better. Their energy was easily shaped, but hard to keep in one form for long. Only if they don’t come in the next five minutes, I allowed. Five minutes later, I paced on the asphalt. No one would see me do anything but frown, I excused myself. Sitting down, I reached out with my mind, feeling the silky sky throbbing with flawless, perfect chaos. I pulled at the blobs of energy that were clouds, an electric feeling running through my body as I touched them. As quickly as I could, I folded them up and, like you might with a paper ball, threw it away. When I opened my eyes, the sun was shining. It was still cold, but it was nicer in the sunlight. “Hey,” Matt said from behind me. I yelped in surprise and fell over on the damp pavement. I glared at him as he bent over my face, looking almost concerned. “Not funny,” I grumbled, getting up and brushing gravel from my leggings. “You’re right,” he agreed, still grinning broadly. I waited for him to say “not!” but he didn’t. I gave him a confused look. “Where are the others?” “Ah, they said they’d meet us there,” he said, stretching. I tried to come up with something witty. “Hm.” Nice Adrianne, I mentally scolded myself. “Let’s get going.” “M’ kay,” he started walking with long languid strides. I had to walk double time to keep up. Curse the genetic structure of shortness. By the time we reached The Halloween Shoppe, I was panting from exertion. Carrying a backpack full of textbooks, while walking with a guy who walks at an unreasonable pace was harder than I thought. Of course, I’d never really thought about that. But still…. You get the idea. Matt opened the door and bowed theatrically, waving me inside with a flourish. I rolled my eyes and walked in. Immediately, the musty smell of mold enveloped me. The place was crammed with costumes, the only light source a window covered in grime. I noted there was a trapdoor on the ceiling in the very back of the room. I pointed. “What’s that?” “Good eyes,” Matt said. When I turned back to him he said “that’s where we’re going.” Matt moved quickly through the jumbled mess of old, forgotten costumes, ducking under half - fallen racks and leaping over waist high piles of costumes. I tried to follow in his footsteps, but after causing two mini avalanches and being buried in the awful smelling cloth, I decided to take my own path. “So how did this happen?” I asked, maneuvering around a gorilla suit. “This?” Matt inquired, ducking under a tent of princess skirts. “This,” I said, unable to find any other words. “Talents.” I waved my hands around for emphasis, which was a pretty stupid idea. My hand knocked over an inflated sumo suit, which, in turn, knocked over a bunch of other stuff. Dust and who knows what billowed into the air. I sneezed, swiping at my watering eyes. Matt coughed violently beside me. “Come on,” he choked. I looked at him in alarm. He didn’t sound too good. I nodded and we stumbled to the trapdoor, which was now only a few paces away. He reached up and rapped on the door with his knuckles. It swung open and a ladder was tossed down. After a quick glance at Matt, I clambered up. He followed behind me, wheezing heavily. I shoved my backpack in front of me and crawled out of the trapdoor opening. I felt, with surprise, that this room had carpet, or at least a rug or two. A pair of hands helped me to my feet. I blinked, clearing my vision. A blonde girl in skinny jeans and a skin-tight shirt stood in front of me. “Kara?” She smiled. “Surprised?” She asked. I shook my head. I was slightly surprised that miss perfect was marred by a Talent, but I wouldn’t let that show. Kara Garte raised her perfectly arched eyebrow. “None of the normal stuff surprises me after my friend burned down a house, us inside it,” I explained. Kara nodded sympathetically. “That’s tough.” I shrugged. “Life’s tough. What’s your Talent?” Kara smiled again and raised her hand. It glowed white for a split second then the skin split, revealing a layer of diamonds. I gaped as Kara continued to ‘remove’ her skin, until she was encased in diamond skin. “Whoa.” I stared. Gasps were coming from the people surrounding me. Mostly teens, I noticed. A boy with startlingly green eyes stepped forward, slowly sinking to the ground. His skin rippled, growing stripes and fur. His body swelled out with muscle. Then, a large tiger burst out of his clothes. It-I corrected myself-he roared and shook off the scraps of clothing. A girl stepped out and unfurled her feathery wings. One by one, they began showing off their Talents, some shyly, others with unabashed pride. I turned around to find Matt still on the ground, wheezing. “Are you all right?” I asked. Matt shook his head. “Asthma,” he wheezed. “You have asthma?” I said. “Yeah, so?” he grumbled, wheezing slightly less. “But you have super speed?” “MATT!” Maddy rushed out of the crowd, tackling her brother with a bear hug. “You idiot! Why didn’t you bring your inhaler?” Matt weakly tried to fend off her attack. I turned away and ran into the crowd, laughing. For all Maddy acted like she didn’t care, she loved her brother. I laughed until my sides and mouth ached. The funny thing was that it wasn’t really even funny, which made me laugh even harder. “Having fun?” Ellie snuck up on me again, which wasn’t surprising; she could turn invisible for Pete’s sake! “Yeah,” I said, trying to erase the goofy smile on my face. I had found myself a quiet, if musty, corner and tried to calm down. I had taken some time; everyone who wants to show their Talents had. “Well, the meeting is about to start now that everyone is comfortable. You should get a seat up front.” She disappeared, literally this time. I moved away from the grimy window I was standing next to, having wiped off part of the sludge of whoknows-what coating it when something caught my eye. Three men in crisp black suits and dark glasses stepped out of a van I had thought was an electric company’s. I stopped in my tracks and looked out my little window, curious. Before they slid the door closed, I saw something glowing, maybe a computer screen? The men walked out into the street, crossed and made their way towards the Halloween Shoppe. I gasped and stumbled back to the main crowds. There were at least fifty kids holed up in an attic with no way out- an extravagant prize for any NIAC agents that might stumble upon us. Everyone had apparently calmed down and were gathered with their backs to the trapdoor, facing two girls and a boy standing on a raised platform of old trunks. One girl was speaking; I recognized her as the student council president, Maya. She was telling everyone how we need to organize ourselves and prepare. I stepped closer, almost at the edge of the crowd. James Karnelli, who was in my English class, raised his hand. “Prepare for what?” he asked. Maya didn’t answer, and instead looked askance at the boy, Kai Torine. He stepped up with a sigh. “We are planning, eventually, to attack the NIAC and stop the mistreating of Talents.” This declaration was met with a multitude of different responses. “You’re crazy!” A girl yelled, a couple kids near her nodding and conferring between them. ARTS & CRAFTS Creative Room Décor+ Crafts for Unique People Kaylin Dunnett Hey readers! This article is for the creative crowd here at CMS… you know who you are. This article covers DIY crafting and room decorating. DIY stands for Do-It -Yourself… and these quick little room accents should be fairly easy and fun. Got a room that just isn’t fitting your more innovative style? Then try some of these. Here are some ideas: Matryoshka (Russian Nesting Dolls) These are both simple and unique. The infamous little wooden dolls that fit one inside the other are really fun to paint, and make great little gifts. Painting with your own unique flair gives your room a neat look. You can buy paint-able blank wooden sets online, or at craft stores. Origami cranes that hang from your ceiling This looks really cool when they are hung together by a window, above a bed, or even above a door entrance. People that are a fan of Japanese art in general might take to this more than others, but proves to be a very interesting piece in a room. Tiny vases made from ornaments: I have actually made one of these before, and let me say to you now that these are really, really cool. Basically all that you need is a clear, large ornament with a removable top, a few flowers, some water, and something to hold the ornament. To hold the ornament still so that it doesn’t break, I recommend a foam crafting cube that you can dig out a crevice for it to sit in. Make cute little flower arrangements, and tie ribbons or other things for a cute look. My vase looks very similar to the one shown in the picture, with the foam cube as a base. Jar Lamps Next time you have a leftover jar, be it for pickles or fruit, save it! You can turn it into a jar lamp. These lamps look very neat when by a window, and easily makes your room a whole lot sunnier. Try them! You can find easy tutorials online. All you need is a trip to the local hardware store for materials. Vases full of seashells Do you have any shells lying around from your last vacation? Or maybe you bought some at a store and have no idea what to do with them. Find an empty vase around the house, a bag of sand (whether it be from the dunes right along town or an art store) and plop the shells in. It looks professional when done correctly. Framed Artwork Sometimes, the best room decorations are art pieces that you have done. Buy some wooden frames, and hang your work around your room. These simple decorations are simple, and will roll in the compliments from friends. Next time you feel like giving your room a makeover, go ahead and try one of these! Hope you guys like it. TRAPPED: ESCAPE FROM THE MANSION Kaylin Dunnett LUCAS We felt like exploring, who could blame us? After all, we were in an old and abandoned house without supervision. So technically, the house was ours to poke around in. After all, if we wanted to figure out how to get out, we’d have to do just that. “We should go through that black door right there,” I muttered, pointing to said door that was across the giant dining room. New places to look, new places to discover. We weren’t at a loss if we went in. There was no ‘right or wrong’ door… unless we end up getting ourselves even more lost. Lauren doesn’t really appear to care either way. In fact, she looks as spacey as ever. I snap my fingers in front of her face, earning myself an annoyed stare. I throw my hands in the air and just keep walking. “You know,” Lauren mutters, putting a hand on her stomach, “I’m kinda hungry. Isn’t there any food in your backpack?” She licks her lips slightly, staring at my ugly backpack that is on my shoulders. “I could check, I guess. No promises for a feast.” I wiggle the pack off of my shoulder, unzip it, and stick my hand inside. I feel around for a moment, look inside, and pull out a bag of cheese crackers I had eaten at school a few days ago. Lauren’s shoulders slouch slightly. What had she been hoping for, a sandwich? “Can I…” She starts, inching her hand towards my bag of crackers. It was pitiful really. “Well, they’re my crackers. We’ll split them.” I pull out two crackers for her, and in a flash she inhales them. She eyes the last two in the bag, the crackers that are for me. I chew my lip, trying to decide what I should do. I eat a cracker and it’s then I realize just how hungry I really was. I’m tempted to eat the second cracker, but it didn’t feel right to just eat it in front of Lauren. In defeat, I end up breaking the cracker in half to split. After our little snack, I finally open up the black door and step inside. Only to nearly fall through the floor. My foot slides, and I realize that I’m weightless, my whole leg plunging through a hole in the middle of the old hardwood. It creaks and groans, like an upset stomach as I fall all the way up to my mid-thigh. I would’ve fallen farther, if Lauren hadn’t figured out what was happening and grabbed my arm at that last moment. My eyes are glassy and wide, trying to assess the situation. There had been no time to scream, no time to steady myself. I breathe heavily, my stuck leg swinging in space. Presumably in a different room. “You okay?” I hear Lauren ask, and I can only nod. She tugs on my arm again, trying to get my leg out of the hole in the floor. There’s a sharp pain on my upper thigh, and when I glance down I see the sharp, jagged teeth of cracked flooring dig into my skin. I wince and try to ignore it as she continues to tug me out. I hold onto her arm, using my other leg to somehow spring myself out. I feel my weight shift, and a slow feeling of relief fall over my leg. I’m out. I try to control my breathing, unable to look away from the deep cut of splinters and wood that had just stabbed me. Lauren sucks in a deep breath, eyes set on my thigh. “…That could have gone better,” I say, a small nervous laugh escaping my lips despite the situation. My eyes wander down to the hole in the floor, and slowly, I realize that across the room there is a bed and a desk. There are papers strewn all around, as if whoever had been in here previously was in quite the rush. The window on the wall barely filtered in any light, blocked by a pair of thick and ugly pea-green curtains. “Are you all right?” Lauren asks again, unable to look away from my bleeding leg. “I’ll live, it’s nothing.” I walk a few steps, wincing in pain. The floor is unstable and unreliable under my feet, and I can hear Lauren inhale sharply every time the floorboards groan under my feet. How many other holes are waiting in this room? “We need to get that bleeding to stop.” And before I can stop her, Lauren’s out of the room and is already looking for a first-aid kit. “Wait!” I call after her, limping to the door. “Stay in there, look around.” I hear her voice echo from the dining hall, and I knew that she wasn’t going to listen to me any longer. I sigh, and carefully sit back onto the floor. How am I going to get out of here? The blood continues to run down my thigh, staining a few papers on the ground. It wasn’t serious, but it was an injury all the same. I pick up the bloodied paper from under my leg. It’s still readable, if you can look past the crimson splotches all up and down the sides. As I glance at it, I feel a weight drop in my stomach. I look at the letters again, making sure I had read them right. ‘Why The Owner of The House Must Die.’ I only need to read the title and I know that I might as well be holding a bomb. “Lauren, come here! I found something!” What Color Would You Be? By: Lena Levi(te) Hello, readers! ACT OF VALOR Donnie Darko Review Jeremy Nicholson Damien Alright, so as far as I know, nobody in eighth grade at this school has seen or heard of the film Donnie Darko. So I decided to do a review. Basically, the movie is about a paranoid, schizophrenic teenager who starts hallucinating a rabbit that tells him when the world will end. Donnie also commits various acts of vandalism and violence, all the time claiming that Frank tells him to do it. The story continues to unravel as Donnie finds out more and more about his hallucinations, time travel, and that creepy rabbit, Frank. The whole movie is very well made, and I recommend it to anybody who doesn’t mind a fair bit of cussing in a couple places, as well as an incredibly creepy rabbit that tells you about doomsday. “28 days… 6 Act of valor uses active duty soldiers. There are also live rounds and surprisingly no cameramen were harmed in this film. The acting isn’t very good because they are not actors. This movie is a need to see. hours… 42 minutes… 12 seconds. That is when... the world... will end.”-Frank Website Reviews Skyrim By Joy Joll and Lena Levi(te) The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a fairly new game on the market. The game can be played on the computer, an Xbox 360, or a Playstation 3. Its predecessors are, unfortunately, not games we have had the pleasure of playing. We would encourage you to look up and perhaps even try the games. Magicka, stamina, and health are key to this game. Magicka (a blue bar in the left bottom corner of your screen) lets you unleash many special attacks, such as flames, sparks, lightning bolts, runes, and healing. Stamina (a green bar in the right bottom corner of your screen) determines how long you can sprint, as well as how many power attacks you get. Health (the red bar in the center of the bottom of your screen) determines, of course, how long you can survive enemy attacks! There are many ten races; these are five of them (for this month) Argonians, a race of crocodile or lizard-like people. They can breathe underwater are resistant to disease, and can increase health regeneration for a short time. Kahjiit, a race of cat-like beings, have increased unarmed damage, and can see in the dark for a short period of time. High Elves (obviously elves), by blood have 50 extra magicka, and can activate their shortlasting ability to regenerate it more quickly. Dark Elves are resistant to fire, and can cloak themselves in fire that damages enemies close by as their special ability. You can use perks obtained when you increase your proficiency in that area. Listed below are six of these (for this month). Smithing: Allows you to make or improve armor. You need ingots, or ore to melt, leather strips, and sometimes gems. The perks you can get include forging dragon and Daedric armor. Enchanting: Allows you to add magical affects to your weapon or armor. In order to learn them, you must first disenchant magical items, which destroys it. You need to have a nonenchanted item, a soul gem and enchants learned to enchant an item. Light Armor: Includes armors such as glass or Elven. The higher the level, the more benefit you get from wearing it. Heavy Armor: Includes armor such as Ebony or Iron. It absorbs more than light armor, but weighs more. A perk can eliminate armor weight. Archery: Allows you to, well, shoot a bow. Leveling it increases your damage done, and the perks can stagger enemies or allow you to zoom in more closely. You need a bow equipped, and arrows to shoot. One-handed weapons: Includes daggers, one-handed swords, axes, and maces. Leveling it increases damage done, and you can also use a shield while using a one-handed weapon. Make Your Own Sentence. Step one; choose the month you were born.
