We all know that being a teacher sometimes requires super-human powers, but what are your class’ special powers? This is intended to be a fun and engaging “getting to know you” type lesson with extension activities for a new class. It will test their creativity, provide facts about the children, enable them to show off their best writing as a baseline assessment and lead onto to further work if you want it to. The idea is that they fill out the factsheet as if they are a new Superhero. So the information is all about them, but they get the enjoyment of making up a superhero name and creating a new Superhero - relating their superhero’s abilities to their own talents. The enjoyment will help “drop their guard” enabling more honest answers and, in our experience, the fact that they are describing a Superhero as if it were themselves, causes them to think more deeply about their answers. Their Superhero’s originality and design can also be used to assess creative and artistic skills. Starter Idea: In pairs list adjectives to describe themselves or qualities of a Superhero or ask the question what makes a Superhero? Teaching Input: you may need to introduce the concept of a superhero using examples from popular culture that the children would know. Make sure you model how to fill in the sheet, by filling it in for yourself (A3 size) and make explicitly clear that they are writing about themselves as if they were a Superhero, and that the Superhero is exactly like them—just a Superhero outside of school! Possible Follow-up Activities Use a thesaurus to find new describing words. Write about the “secret” life of the Superhero and the crimes they solve - you could even write a story about them! Pick the a muscly Superhero that was created, and use it to learn about muscles in the body. Explore the PSHE and SEAL links - good to be me, social responsibility, crime etc. Write a poem about the Superhero. Create a large-scale artwork of the Superhero in flight...
