AfriGIS Languages Initiative Episode 24 Seasons and Weather Conditions Episode 24 Seasons and Weather Conditions Good day, and welcome to the AfriGIS languages course. My name is Caster Seakamela and I am Eugene van Deventer and we will be presenting the AfriGIS languages course. The AfriGIS languages course is a social responsibility and cultural integration initiative by AfriGIS. Please visit us at www.afrigis.co.za/download/languages for more information and learning material. Coming up today is episode twenty-four of the formal course which consists of twenty-six episodes. Today we will spend around five minutes on seasons and weather conditions. Traditionally, the Batswana referred to the different seasons in relation with the various activities within those seasons. For example, the month of June is called “Seetebosigo” in Setswana and it means ‘do not pay visits at night in winter’, simply because it is cold and people may not have enough blankets to offer you. July is “Phukwi”, because new green leaves appear after winter. “Phalane” is the name for October. This word has the meaning of ‘young Impala’ because it is when they are born. The following are the months of the year in English and their translation in Setswana: January Ferikgong February Tlhakole March Mopitlo April Moranang May Motshêganong June Seetebosigo July Phukwi August Phatwê September Lwêtse October Diphalane November Ngwanatsêêle December Sedimonthole Page 2 of 3 AfriGIS Languages Learning Material Let’s listen to the seasons of the year in English and their translation in Setswana: Winter Mariga Spring Dikgakologo Summer Selemo Autumn Letlhafula Now that you know the seasons of the year, listen to a few examples of words describing various weather conditions: Hot Fisa Cold Tsididi Warm Mogote Windy Phefo Dust Lerole Rain Pula It's hot Go bollo It's cold Go tsididi It's warm Go bollo It's raining Pula e a na It's snowing Go na le letlha It's foggy Go mouwane This concludes the lesson for today.
