2016 NBA Champion Cleveland Cavaliers
Receive Rings in Opening Night Ceremony
Rings Tell Story of Team’s Historic Championship
Journey in Intricate Detail
The Cleveland Cavaliers commemorated their first NBA Championship in a
historic pregame ceremony, highlighted by the presentation of Championship
rings, prior to their 2016-17 season opener vs. the New York Knicks on
Tuesday
night
at
Quicken
Loans
Arena.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, joined by Cavaliers majority owner Dan Gilbert and
vice-chairmen Nate Forbes and Jeff Cohen, along with General Manager David Griffin,
presented Cavs players and coaches with their distinctive Championship rings that
celebrate the team’s journey that delivered the first-ever NBA title and the first major
sports
championship
in
52
years
to
the
city
of
Cleveland.
In brilliant detail, the jeweled band captures the story of the Cavaliers historic and
dramatic championship run to become the only team in NBA history to overcome a 3-1
deficit and win the NBA Championship when they defeated the Golden State Warriors in
Game
7,
93-89.
The approximately 6.5 carat ring is encrusted with over 400 diamonds plus a one carat
diamond that adorns the top of the Larry O’Brien Trophy. Each ring is set in 10K white
gold and 14K yellow gold and is the heaviest NBA Championship ring ever made,
weighing in at 165 grams and 105 pennyweights.
TOP OF RING

The
phrase
“WORLD
CHAMPIONS”
is
proudly
displayed along the top and
bottom bezel in 14K yellow gold.
Each
letter
is
framed
in
diamonds, using a total of 216
diamonds
to
represent
Cleveland’s area code, as well
as a nod to the popular “All In to
16”
motto, which
was
a
dominate theme of the Cavs
playoff
push.

In the center, the Cleveland
Cavaliers “C” logo is comprised
of custom cut dark garnet that
wraps around the coveted Larry
O’Brien trophy, also made in
14K yellow gold. The black
accent
outlining
the
“C”
represents the turning point in the championship run when the Cavs won three
straight games after choosing to wear their black-sleeved uniforms for Games 5
and 7. Fans wore black tee shirts for Game 6 because of a league rule that calls
for light uniforms for home games during the playoffs.

A one carat diamond sits atop the trophy to represent the team’s first-ever NBA
championship.

In the background, 100 diamonds represent the number of Cavaliers playoff
victories in the team’s history to win a championship.

Cascading the right and left edges are 46 diamonds (23 per side) which
represent the 46 years that the Cleveland Cavaliers organization has been in
existence (1970-2016).

The player numbers in 14K yellow gold, each with an accompanying diamond
divider, encircle the top of the ring in sequential order. Each player ring has his
own distinct number encrusted in diamonds displayed in a banner that drops
down into a representation of the iconic Cleveland skyline to symbolize the
connectivity between the city and the team.
LEFT SHOULDER OF RING

On
one
shoulder,
the
artistic
representation of the Cleveland skyline
is the center piece distinguished by the
Terminal Tower, Key Tower, 200 Public
Square,
Carl
B. Stokes
Federal
Courthouse, Quicken Loans Arena and
the
Detroit-Superior
Bridge.
Underneath the bridge is the Roman
numeral LII (52) to symbolize that
Cleveland’s 52 year championship
drought, aka “The Curse,” is now water
under the bridge. Below the skyline
“CLE” is embedded in 14K yellow gold.
RIGHT SHOULDER OF RING

The opposite shoulder features the
player’s name in 14K yellow gold and
the winning championship year of
2016, with the ‘0’ replaced with the
NBA logo. The state of Ohio salutes the
Cavs connection to a passionate statewide fan base, and is encrusted with 11
diamonds to signify the number of
years the franchise has been under the
ownership of a group led by Dan Gilbert
(2005).
INTERIOR OF RING

On the interior side of the ring is a line
of seven gemstones to represent the
best-of-seven games in an NBA Finals
series. In the order the games were
won, three white diamonds depict the
Golden State Warriors and four genuine
“wine-colored” garnets represent the
Cavaliers, symbolizing the first time in
NBA history that any team has
overcome a 3-1 deficit to become NBA
Champions.

At the start of the NBA Playoffs, each
Cavaliers player along with head coach
Tyronn Lue was assigned a section of a
16-piece puzzle that represented the
number of wins necessary for a
championship, and that when fully
assembled, piece-by-piece following
every victory, would form the image of
the Larry O’Brien trophy. A 14K yellow
gold custom symbol depicting each
players
individual
puzzle
piece
personalizes each ring. A round black diamond is another reminder of the
positive impact of the team’s sleeved black uniforms.
