Elevated Triglyceride Levels

Elevated Triglyceride Levels
What is a triglyceride?
In very simple terms, triglyceride is another word for fat. The current normal value
for triglycerides is less than 150.
Why be concerned about triglycerides?
A large amount of triglycerides in our blood are related to heart disease and often
diabetes.
How to lower your triglycerides:
•
Decrease saturated fats (cheese, burgers, chocolate, butter)
•
Decrease cholesterol
•
Decrease concentrated sweets (juices, cakes, cookies, pies)
•
Decrease alcohol
•
Decrease white starches (rice, pasta, bread)
•
Consume 2-4 grams Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) of fish oil
supplements. *
*Be sure to follow the specific plans laid out for you by your
physician and dietitian. Patients taking more than three grams of
EPA/DHA per day should do so only if advised by a physician or
dietitian. Advise your physician if you take fish oil.
