The For the Week of November 28, 2016 ISSUE 15 COMMUNICATOR Principal’s Advent Message • IN THIS ISSUE • ADVENT CALENDAR OFFICE MEMO DECEMBER TIME SHEET STUDENT COUNCIL FOOD DRIVE DECEMBER LUNCH MENU DECEMBER LUNCH ORDER FORM I have shared the following information before, but I feel that we all need reminders, so here again are my Advent thoughts for you. “Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight” (Mt 3:3). With these words, John the Baptist, one of Christianity’s earliest evangelizers, proclaimed that the Lord is coming, and our hearts and minds must be ready to receive him. We live in such a busy time. Our lives can be so hectic and we can have a hard time slowing down to remember the reason we celebrate Christmas. The General Directory for Catechesis gives five essential elements of evangelization. These five elements are all ways for us to prepare for and celebrate the coming of our Savior. I have listed them below with some simple ways to live them out this Advent Season. 1. Proclamation: We, at the school, will be proclaiming the news of Jesus’ birth with your children. I know you do this at home, too. You may want to read the Sunday scriptures as a family to prepare for each Sunday. 8th GRADE PANCAKE BREAKFAST 12/4 ORDER FORM 2. Witness: Mary witnessed her faith in responding to God’s call to her. You witness your faith every time you attend Mass, talk about your beliefs with your children or others, every time you light your Advent Wreath or help someone out. ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BOUTIQUE 12/4 VENDOR FORM 3. Teaching: As you share with your children Christmas stories, don’t forget to share the “real” story. BEFORE THE MARVEL OF THIS NIGHT - CONCERT 12/10 4. Sacrament: The students will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation in December. An Advent Wreath also helps children appreciate the rituals and symbols central to our faith. Sunday Mass is our greatest mission and time to receive the Sacrament of Eucharist. Please make sure you allow your children the opportunity to attend Sunday Mass. OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE 12/12 CANDY CANE LANE - VOLUNTEER ELVES NEEDED DEC 12-14 HOLY TRINITY GALA VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES BOX TOP CONTEST GYMNASTICS FUN - SESSION 2 GET YOUR HT DECALS 5. Love of neighbor: It is easy to become frazzled and impatient as we wait in long lines and rush to do everything. Please be role models for your children when you are out and about. Remember to be conscious of the spirit of the season. Try to encourage the children to help someone less fortunate during this special time. There are angels in the church that children can take and fulfill the wish for someone else. The students have many opportunities to give, including our Make-A-Wish letters to Santa and their classroom social justice projects. What a witness we can be when we are aware of those less fortunate and are called to action! As we prepare our hearts for the birth of our Savior, it is a good time to remember that the center of our Catholic faith is the Eucharist. The Mass is the best expression of our Catholic faith--being community with one another; hearing God’s Word, and receiving the Eucharist. When we experience Mass, we listen to God’s Word, and we receive Him in the Eucharist, we are fortified for our day or our week. It is not enough to just have the experience of the Mass and Eucharist. As Catholics we are called to go out into our world and make a difference. We can make a difference by proclaiming, witnessing, teaching, receiving sacraments, and loving our neighbor! Go forth, this Advent season to proclaim, witness, teach, receive, and love! Advent Calendar 2016 SUNDAY MONDAY November 27 Bless your Advent wreath. Light one of the violet candles marking the season’s first week as you sing a verse of “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.” TUESDAY 28 Consider adding a Jesse tree, depicting the relationship of Jesus with his ancestor Jesse, to your family’s Advent traditions. Learn about Jesse trees. 4 Light the second violet candle on your Advent wreath. Pray the Rosary and meditate on the Joyful Mysteries with your family. ”If we love God and our brothers and sisters, we walk in the light; but if our heart is closed . . . then darkness falls within and around us.” WEDNESDAY 29 Today is “Giving Tuesday,” a global day of giving fueled by social media and collaboration. Consider a gift to one of the national collections that support the Church’s works of social justice, evangelization, and education. 5 6 On this feast of St. Nicholas, the 4th century bishop known for his abundant generosity to the poor, pray for an end to global poverty. (Pope Francis, Dec. 24, 2013) 11 On this Gaudete (Rejoice) Sunday, light the third (rose-colored) candle on your Advent wreath, and give generously to the collection for retired religious. THURSDAY 30 On this Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle, contemplate the “Great Call of Apostleship.” Today we remember St. Ambrose who once wrote, “Nothing graces the Christian soul so much as mercy—mercy as shown chiefly toward the poor.” 7 (St. Ambrose, On the Duties of Clergy, 1.11.38) 12 “On this Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, let us . . . gratefully remember her visit and maternal closeness . . . . and let us entrust the life our peoples and the continental mission of the Church to her.” 13 Today is the feast day of St. Lucy, who suffered martyrdom during the Diocletian persecution. She is mentioned by name in the Roman Canon and is best known as the patron saint of the blind. 14 “On the evening of life, we shall be judged on our love,” wrote St. John of the Cross, a founder of a Carmelite order known for his poetry and mystical writings, whose feast day is today (Dichos, no. 64). FRIDAY SATURDAY December 1 2 “Today is the World Day for the battle against HIV/ AIDS. We express our closeness to all people whom it has affected, especially children.” “What is the meaning of ‘Prepare the way of the Lord’? It means: make ready for the reception of whatever Christ may wish to do.” (Pope Francis, Dec. 1, 2013) (St. Cyril of Alexandria, Commentary on Luke, 6) 8 On this Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, reflect on St. Augustine’s words: “Mary is more blessed in receiving the faith of Christ, than in conceiving the flesh of Christ.” 9 Today we remember St. Juan Diego, to whom Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared in the 16th century in what is now Mexico. Pray to him today for the protection of migrants. (St. Augustine, On Holy Virginity, 3) 15 “Exceeding gently, the finger of your justice, in love and compassion, touches the wounds of one who is to be healed” (St. Ephrem of Syria, Nisibene Hymns, 11.4). Pray today for the people of war-torn Syria. 3 On this feast day of the great missionary St. Francis Xavier, read about how each baptized Catholic is called to be a missionary disciple of Christ, to proclaim the love of God they have experienced. 16 Today, many Central & Latin American countries begin to celebrate Las Posadas—reenactments of the Holy Family’s journey to Bethlehem. Learn more about this and other cultural Advent traditions. 10 On this day in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Read about Catholic social teaching on human rights and responsibilities. 17 Today, begin including the “O Antiphons,” which accompany the Magnificat canticle of Evening Prayer from December 17-23, as part of your table or bedtime prayers. (Pope Francis, Dec. 12, 2014) 18 19 20 21 Light the final candle on your Advent wreath and assemble and bless the family crèche. Remember to hide the baby Jesus figure until Christmas! “For the great human family it is always necessary to rediscover the common horizon toward which we are journeying. The horizon of hope!” “Surely in her heart she said to the baby in her womb: ‘Come, I want to see your face, for they have told me you will be great!’” (Pope Francis, Dec. 23, 2013). Meditate today on the birth story of Jesus. Today is the feast day of St. Peter Canisius, a renowned Jesuit preacher and Doctor of the Church. In his memory, pray today for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. (Pope Francis, Dec. 1, 2013) 22 “With your honorable conduct and your irreproachable deeds, prepare the Lord’s way, smooth out his path so that the Word of God may act in you without hindrance.” (Origen, Homilies on Luke, 21) 23 Today we remember St. John of Kanty, a Polish priest whose personal devotion and humility were examples to all who knew him. Contemplate the virtue of humility in your prayer today. 24 “This is how the liturgy of this holy Christmas night presents to us the birth of the Savior: as the light that pierces and dispels the deepest darkness.” (Pope Francis, Dec. 24, 2014) Copyright © 2016, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington, DC.
