This year, the Partnership received a record 4,485 valid responses to the 2013 Downtown Denver Commuter Survey and findings show that transit and driving alone are the two most commonly used ways Downtown Denver commuters travel to work. The Downtown Denver Commuter Survey measures a sample of the Downtown Denver employee population to analyze commuting patterns, explore the attractiveness of transportation benefits and determine how commuters currently travel to their Downtown offices. “Understanding the commuting preferences, options and trends of Downtown employees plays a critical role in the management and planning of Downtown Denver,” said Tami Door, President and CEO of the Downtown Denver Partnership. “By highlighting these key findings we can reinforce Downtown Denver’s role as a regional transportation hub as well as continue to support the transportation amenities and programs that our Downtown employees rely on.” Intended to help current and future employers in the center city have a better understanding of employees’ commuter habits, the Downtown Denver Commuter Survey shows commuters who work in Downtown Denver have different commuting habits than the population as a whole. Downtown Denver commuters reported significantly higher transit and biking use than those in the City of Denver, the Metro Area and the United States as a whole. Individuals who commute to Downtown Denver are nine times as likely to use transit, seven times as likely to bike and half as likely to drive to work as the average U.S. commuter. Key findings in the report show: Transit and driving alone are the two most commonly used ways Downtown Denver commuters travel to work with 46% of respondents using transit and only 38% driving alone. How Downtown Denver commuters compare to the average American commuter – commuters traveling to Downtown Denver use transit more and drive alone less than the average American commuter. Key factors such as age, gender, office location, commute length and employer-provided transportation benefits effects an employee’s commuting habits. The report also shares interesting facts and findings such as: o Commuters under 30 are almost twice as likely to bike to work and over three times as likely to walk to work than commuters as a whole. o In Downtown Denver, males are 167% more likely to bike to work than females, and in the U.S., males are 116% more likely to bike to work.
