weddings - Headlam Hall

WEDDINGS
Welcome
Since the 17th century, Headlam
Hall has looked out over the
picturesque rolling countryside of
lower Teesdale, a hidden gem just
waiting to be discovered. In 1978
my parents opened Headlam Hall
to its first guests and since then it
has been sympathetically improved
and enhanced including the recent
restoration of the exclusive-use
Coach House Suite, a stunning spa
and a lovely golf course. Today it
enjoys an excellent reputation as
one of the region’s leading venues
thanks to the fantastic setting
and dedicated team of staff with
continual improvements to keep
the facilities up-to-date.
Over the years we have built
a wealth of knowledge and
experience when it comes to
hosting wedding receptions and
civil ceremonies so we understand
both the traditions of this special
day as well as the importance of
current fashions to make your
wedding relevant to your time.
We have always had a policy of
only hosting one wedding a day at
Headlam as we believe that such
an important occasion deserves
exclusivity and our undivided
attention.
I believe that Headlam Hall
holds an inherent romance and
charm within both the walls of this
historic building and the walls of
its beautiful gardens which are a
wonderful feature for weddings.
I hope that this magazine conveys
some of the magic we have to offer
and we are delighted to share
these pages with some of our most
trusted partners who can help to
make your perfect day.

Why Choose Headlam Hall
for Your Special Day?
Located in the rolling countryside of
lower Teesdale, just seven miles west
of Darlington sits the picturesque
hamlet of Headlam. This quiet corner
of Teesdale is where you will find the
superb 17th century Headlam Hall
Hotel & Spa. This four-star Jacobean
manor overlooks its own rolling
farmland estate, standing in four
acres of walled gardens with elegant
lawns, ancient beech hedges, colourful
herbaceous borders and flowing
waters.
The impressive and recently restored
Coach House Suite ballroom can
accommodate up to one hundred
and fifty guests and is a unique
room characterised by its stunning
arched glass ceiling which gives a
bright garden feeling to afternoon
receptions. There are antique crystal
chandeliers which add glamour to the
room, as well as a modern lighting
system that allows you to create a
specific mood or theme in the space,
should you wish to.
Headlam Hall will make a superb
choice for your wedding, and as an
independent family owned business,
it has a core philosophy of offering
individual and personal service that is
re-enforced by the policy to only host
one wedding a day.
The Hall’s elegant Drawing Room is
also licensed for civil ceremonies, prior
to a reception in either the Coach
House Suite or Stable Lounge.
The hotel lends itself very well to both
smaller, intimate weddings and larger,
lavish occasions. Let’s show you round:
received numerous awards including
2 AA rosettes, Taste Durham Highest
Quality assured and Local Champion
awards.
Headlam Hall’s bedrooms and suites
provide stylish and comfortable
accommodation for any of your guests
wishing to stay overnight and the
fabulous ‘Gainford Suite’ is perfect for
the Bride & Groom with its spacious
sitting room and four-poster bedroom
looking out over the main lawn and
beautiful bathroom with traditional
slipper bath. Residents can also enjoy
the award winning Headlam Spa
with its stunning design, therapeutic
benefits and indulgent spa therapy
(more about this on pages 16 and 17).
The food at any reception is of the
utmost importance and at Headlam
the quality remains the same whether
dining for two in the restaurant or a
full house in the Coach House Suite.

Dress to
Impress
Allow us to offer you some fashion inspiration for
your big day with all of the latest trends hot off the
wedding catwalks. Linda Jane Westphal reports...
Fabulous Frocks
There is something for everyone in the
latest wedding fashion trends whatever
style you favour.
Colour palettes include soft metallics
and whites, a beautiful and very stylish
combination which is flattering and suits
any colour theme. Pastels also reappeared
on the bridal catwalks recently, tying
in with the romantic trend. Designers
such as Jenny Packham use pretty sugar
almond pastel shades to create utterly
feminine looks.
The latest styles channelled the trends
seen on the catwalks of London, Paris
and New York. Lela Rose and Temperley
London designs used halter necks to show
the shoulders and arms, perfect for a
summer wedding. Cut outs also feature in
this year’s looks with cheeky cut out gowns
flashing some flesh and echoing this
summer’s big mainstream trend.
However, if you prefer to be more
understated then look at chic capelets.
Often sheer or gossamer thin with
intricate wisps of lace, these beautiful
capes offer a glimpse of flesh without you
feeling too exposed.
Channelling a super elegant Great Gatsby
feel, the capes add a touch of haute
couture to the feel of the gowns, luxing up
the look of the whole dress. These were
everywhere on the runways, offering a
selection of unique takes on traditional
wedding styles.

Victoria Robson Bridal
Victoria Robson Bridal
Shorter dresses and tea dresses were also seen at designers such as
Temperley London, offering a great option for brides looking for a
vintage look.
If traditional isn’t your thing then pant suits are a major theme and
can offer a versatile but still stylish wedding option. Elie Saab showed
some super stylish options, delivering an elegant take on bridal attire.
Shirt dresses were also seen at many designer shows including Carolina
Herrera. These offer a really flattering and structured wedding dress
style which is individual and fashion forward.
The key to making the search for your ideal dress as stress free and
enjoyable as possible is finding the right bridal boutique for you.
We love Victoria Robson Bridal, an award winning boutique based
in Northallerton. The boutique carries a huge array of dresses and
outfits from designers such as Sottero & Midgeley, Pronovias, Kenneth
Winston, Victoria Kay and more.
The shop has won awards for its customer service and its experienced
and lovely team will take the time to recommend and work with you to
find the dress of your dreams. The boutique also has lot of options for
bridesmaids as well as grooms for a complete look.

Good Grooming
It’s not just brides who are dressing to
impress these days, grooms have become
much more stylish and fashion driven in
recent years.
Luxury tailored suits with a contemporary
twist and high end accessories continue to
be seen in menswear, along with traditional
wedding suits with tweed still a big trend
and ideal for a country gent feel.
Celebs have been styling suits informally
with rolled up sleeves, a loose tie knot,
removing the jacket and wearing waistcoats
but if you prefer a more formal look for
the ceremony you can incorporate this
relaxed elegance into some of the wedding
photography to channel the trend.
Affleck & Moffat
Smart black DJs with black skinny ties can look super stylish this season
and blue suits matched with brown shoes can offer a contemporary feel.
Accessories are big news so think a classic colour pop sock or dress the suit
up with scarves or waistcoats.
Burgundy looks great contrasted against the current fashion for tweed
and check. Tweed suits are smartly tailored with contrasting buttons,
stitching and linings for a modern twist.
For super stylish groom wear check out one of our favourite gentleman’s
outfitters, the iconic Darlington based tailors Affleck and Moffat. With an
extensive pedigree, this Savile Row of the North features fashion forward
looks alongside more traditional attire and even offers handmade suits
crafted by tailors with decades of experience. Whether you’re hiring or
buying or having something specially made, their attention to detail will
ensure everything fits perfectly and they have a range of fab accessories to
ensure that you and your best man are looking hot to trot on the big day.

Themes
Dreams
The right theme can really give your
wedding the wow factor. Linda Jane
Westphal finds out more about adding
all of the right touches...
Whether you love rustic or vintage, fairytale or boho,
traditional or forest, one thing all of the trends in wedding
styling have in common is that they have become a little more
personal.
Today’s wedding is all about you and your relationship,
whether it’s celebrated in a host of small touches or forms
the foundation upon which your theme is based. The focus
is firmly upon celebrating your style and personality and
delivering the ultimate wow factor.
Choosing a theme or style can be daunting with so many
choices to be made and many couples opt for a venue stylist
for this reason. A good stylist can pull your ideas and likes
together into something really special that transforms the
venue on the big day. They have the right suppliers on speed
dial or work with your chosen suppliers to ensure that every
element complements the final look.
Lisa Charles Venue Styling
There is a predicted return to old fashioned
blooms such as mums and carnations and
lots of greenery including unusual varieties.
Centre pieces that are popular right now
include antique vases in cut glass and metal
tones, lanterns with foliage flowing inside
and out and old family heirlooms for a
quirky boho feel.
We love Lisa Charles Venue Styling because there are no set
packages or themes; everything is created bespoke for you
so you have something truly original and very special. Lisa
Charles knows Headlam Hall well, and will be able to give you
lots of ideas and inspiration about how to make it your own.
Flowers are one of the most important elements in creating
a stylish wedding and this year so many of the main trends
channel greenery and an outdoors feel. Bringing ‘the
outdoors in’ is a major trend and this can be achieved with
trailing vines and branches, flower walls or the use of garlands
to decorate archways and gazebos and even chairs and tables.

Bouquets are loose structured and have the
feel of freshly picked wildflowers with lots of
greenery, again bringing the outdoors feel
into the wedding and enhancing the feeling
of relaxed informality.

Our favourite florists are Forget Me
Not Flowers and Anna Hunton Floral
Designer. Both create beautiful and
imaginative displays and bouquets which
really add a wow factor to your scheme.
They will talk you through your big day,
your colours and the feel you want to
create and then they will translate that
into something unique and totally special,
creating a magical feel for your day.
Forget Me Not
Another important element to consider
is the cake. The cake should fit into your
theme and is a focal point so it really
needs to make a statement. Metallic
elements have proved popular as well as
naked cakes this year. The informality
of the naked cake has evolved in 2017
into the semi naked cake which sees
layers iced with a thin layer of creamy
buttercream. This still channels the
informal feel but in a more structured
way and can work with both traditional
and more informal weddings. Fresh
blooms can be added or delicate iced
flowers.
Anna Hunton
Drip cakes are popular and look very avant garde and stylish with the colours
picking up on your chosen theme. If you want something more traditional as
your main cake, why not add in a Groom Cake as well. Popular in Victorian
times, they have now made a welcome return after Prince William had one
at his wedding. The Groom cake can be a lot more quirky and fun and can
celebrate the Groom’s likes and passions.
We love the cakes of top patisserie chef Chris Burnett from Burnett 4 Cakes.
Stunning designs and incredibly delicious flavours from deeply traditional to
quirky and fashion forward, the cake company can create something that will
add a touch of theatre to your day, look incredible in the photos and ensure
everyone has a smile on their face.
Sam Green Calligraphy
Once you have your theme and colours it’s time to think about invites. These
are incredibly important because they set the tone for your whole event and are
the first ‘reveal’ of your big day. Inviting your friends and family to celebrate
your most special day of your life is an important part of your wedding journey
so chat to wedding invite specialists to get ideas and inspiration.
We love the mother and daughter team at Sam Green Calligraphy. They create
absolutely stunning designs which bring your vision to life in a truly unique
way. Their designs are so beautiful that they can work as one off wedding pieces
of art that can then be treasured and displayed after the big day.

Lights, Camera, Action
When the wedding day arrives, it can
too easily whizz past, just leaving a blur
of memories. That’s why it’s vital to get a
fantastic photographer to capture your day.
A talented photographer will chronicle the
story of your day in a series of breathtaking
images which capture all of those special
moments so you have them immortalised
forever to treasure.
A good wedding photographer can create a
bespoke package and can combine portraits,
reportage, shots for social media and
more, the choices are endless so that you
can create the story of your day in a really
personal way.
Gary Walsh
Photographers also often offer pre wedding shoots in places which have special meaning for you or romantic foreign locations
as well as post wedding shoots. These are often ideal if you want traditional photography on the day for your relatives but
something a little bit more ‘you’ for your own personal photographs.
We love the work of both Gary Walsh and Camera A. Both photographers are very experienced in wedding photography and
offer a range of different services for you to choose from. Both produce beautiful photos which you will want to return to again
and again. Take a look at the photographers’ portfolios and choose the one you have a good rapport with and whose style
appeals to you the most.
If music be the food of love
The right music can turn a special day into something
magical. We are big fans of Amici Musicali, three lovely
ladies who play the cello, flute and violin. Stylish and
versatile, they play in a light classic style and have
performed in front of royalty many times. They add a
touch of class and fabulousness to any wedding.
Planning a wedding is one of the most exciting times of
your life, culminating in a day where you celebrate your
love surrounded by all of the people that matter to you
both so enjoy every step of the magical journey ahead.
Many congratulations!

Jane says, “A wedding is one of the most
important days in people’s lives, so it is
a great privilege to be a part of that day. We also have a studio, where we do lots
of family portraits, so the next best thing
is when a bride and groom bring their

“As we are an all female team, we can
really connect with the bride because
we understand what she wants from
her special day. Being female enables
me to go into the bedroom at home or
the hotel to take photographs of the
finishing touches of the bride getting
ready. We can be on hand and offer
help, advice & support, like an extra
girl friend! We photograph the day in
a fun yet unobtrusive way, so that you
have beautiful photography that can be

All images can then be provided on
disk as high resolution files with the

a wide range of options which include
beautiful albums and Graphistudio

Camera A wedding photography
offers many different packages,
which can also be tailored to suit
the requirements of each bride and
groom.
As we love photographing weddings at
Headlam Hall we would like to offer a

We offer coverage from the bride’s
preparations until the wedding
breakfast as standard, then additional
coverage to include speeches and the

We have packages with one

If it is a smaller wedding you may not
want 2 photographers on the day.
Every image is edited as standard, to
make them as perfect as your

For Gary Walsh, taking a stunning image is more about
expression, lighting and composition than it is about make
of camera, fancy gadgets and Photoshop polishing. Seeing
an image is the art, capturing the image is the science and
selling the image is what keeps him in business.
Over the years, Gary has won international, national and
regional awards for his photography and has lectured all
across the UK. As he says, “this is all very exciting stuff and
who wouldn’t want to be patted on the back by their peers,
but for me helping a bride and groom feel comfortable in
front of my camera, getting a smile out of a stubborn 2 year
old or waiting patiently for the right daylight to fall onto a
building, that’s one of the reasons I do what I do for a living”.
A skilled photographer with a natural creative talent and
a wealth of experience in the wedding industry, Gary
will photograph your wedding using a relaxed, informal,
reportage style of photography together with traditional
skills, enabling him to capture the fine details, emotion
and spontaneity created on your wedding day. Working
quickly and unobtrusively without you feeling rushed or the
photography being too drawn out, creating stunning images
for you to treasure for a lifetime.
If you would like any further information or an appointment to
visit the studio, meet Gary, look at albums and discuss your
requirements please get in touch.

“The best wedding ever, the best wedding yet.
The wedding that no one will ever forget, with
amazing pictures that documented our day so
wonderfully thanks to Gary”
Caroline and John 25/06/16
“We were lucky enough to secure Gary for
our wedding in August 2015 and it was one of
the best decisions we made surrounding our
whole wedding organisation. He was friendly,
flexible and listened carefully to our vision of
the day whilst bringing helpful suggestions of
his own to all of our meetings. Unfortunately
it rained on the day itself but Gary went above
and beyond to make it stress free. He used the
weather to his advantage; capturing the most
amazing images. All of our guests commented
on how skilled Gary was at capturing the most
natural images without even knowing he was
there. We were over the moon with our final
album of images, it told the story of our day
perfectly. We cannot praise Gary enough for
his professionalism, attention to detail and
talent. We would not hesitate to recommend
Gary in the future”.

Real Life
Wedding
Nick & Tash Saxton
When was you wedding and why did you
pick that time of year?
Our wedding was in April 2016. We chose that time of year because
we wanted to get married in the Spring and the gardens at Headlam
were beautiful. We were also able to be accommodated by the hotel
for some additional rooms for wedding guests.
What made you choose Headlam Hall?
We have previously lived not too far from Headlam Hall and had
stayed at the hotel many times before. Tash’s parents know the hotel
well and have stayed there for many years. We love the friendly
atmosphere and the setting is fantastic! It’s easy to get to, which was
a bonus for our guests who were travelling from further afield.
What really sold it to us though was what Headlam Hall had to
offer us for our wedding. The Coach House Suite had just been
refurbished and was beautiful. The wedding team were extremely
helpful and supportive and gave us a personal service which really
helped. The food was fantastic with lots of options (we had the
seabass which was incredible). Many of our guests stayed in the
hotel and the newly refurbished rooms were a real hit with them.
All in all it was the personalised service and support that we got that
made us choose Headlam Hall.
What was the hardest thing to organise?
The table plan was pretty tricky to finalise. Many hours were spent
with name tags and a big cardboard table plan. The rest of it went
pretty smoothly we think. The wedding team at Headlam helped us
with a lot of things which made our lives easier.
Was there a theme to your wedding day?
Our wedding had a spring country garden theme with spring flowers
and bunting all around the reception room. The bridesmaids were
dressed in pastel green dresses with the flowers containing thistles,
anemones, roses and greenery to compliment them.
Tell us about the dress!
I chose the dress with my mum in a lovely shop in Corbridge. I never
had imagined that I would pick a dress with long sleeves and a veil,
but as soon as I tried it on I didn’t want to take it off. It had a high
scoop neckline gown with a plunging low back featuring a tattoo lace
back, tattoo lace long sleeves and train. It was intricate and classic. I
absolutely loved it.
Did anything happen on the day that was unexpected?
We truly saw all the seasons on our wedding day. The temperature
was a little colder than planned. It snowed in the morning, then
we had some rain. But for our photos and the drinks reception, we
had beautiful sunshine including a gorgeous sunset. It really added
character to our day.
What was the song for your first dance and why?
“Skinny love” by Bon Iver. It reminds us of living in Australia when
we first moved in together. It brings back happy memories.
What was the funniest moment on the day?
I think the best men’s’ speech which included a full length
interpretation of the song “2 become 1” by the Spice Girls was
a particular highpoint. The other highlight was the bridesmaids
appearing on the dancefloor with masks of the groom’s face and
pom-poms dancing to ‘Cheerleader’.
Where did you go on honeymoon?
We actually had two honeymoons. Our mini-moon was in North
Yorkshire straight after the wedding for two nights. For our real
honeymoon we went to Italy in Summer 2016. We went to Lake
Como, Florence and the Amalfi coast. It was the best holiday ever,
great weather, hotels and the food was incredible. We would highly
recommend it.
