These days, people wonder about the fate of the book. of course, as the people of the book, we
Jews have a particular interest. Yet we are probably more accurately thought of as the people
of the word. For a book has a clear beginning and a clear end. Even James Joyce's Finnegan's
Wake, a book that famously circles back on itself, swallowing its tale like a snake, has cut and
bound pages. Anyone can pick it up in a bookstore and see its beginning, middle, and end.
Yet our collection of texts is more like hypertext than a single book. Commentators lead on to
other commentators and it all relates, one to the other. Also, before there were books there was
the scroll. Scrolls are not so simple as books -- which is why they did not flourish once the book
was invented. Scrolls make it harder to skip ahead and they are not so clearly linear. Their circular
shape suggests depths beyond simple beginnings and endings. our central text,
the Torah, is written on a scroll.
As we reach the end of the Torah, we roll it back to begin again. In rewinding, one views every page -- every
column of text. You cannot flip to the first page. one must painstakingly revisit -- however briefly -- every page
of the scroll to reach the beginning again. The computer makes it easier to move, paste, revisit, and skip.
Nonetheless messages rely on the word. So the Jewish people with its portable culture, the culture of the word,
moves through different media: scrolls to screens, still seeking meaning, still thirsting for truth.

Traditions are important. They bind generations together. They
allow us to pass shared experiences from parent to
child and create continuity in our community.
However, sometimes a break from tradition
is equally important. In these instances the
novelty of changed circumstances allows us
to take notice of something new and different.
Eric J. Diamond
For many years Sinai Temple followed the
tradition of holding a Spring Dinner Dance
honoring one or more members for outstanding service to our community.
The event allowed us to gather together
in a festive setting to celebrate and
acknowledge significant accomplishments.
This year Sinai will break with tradition;
we will not hold a Dinner Dance. Instead, under the direction
of our co-chairs rachelle Marcus, Michael Nazarian and Sheri
rapaport, on June 10 we will present a night of musical welcome
with our new Cantor, Marcus Feldman. The night will include
a selection of Jewish and secular music aimed at presenting
Cantor Feldman to the congregation even before his official
start on July 1. Cantor Feldman will be joined by an outstanding

while Cantor Feldman is a
Los Angeles native, he spent
much of his professional
life at Stephen S. wise
Temple. our concert is aimed at providing an early opportunity
for the community to meet Cantor Feldman and to enjoy his
music. By breaking with tradition and offering a very different
program, we seek to take notice of the significant change that
will shortly occur.
As we welcome Cantor Feldman we would be terribly remiss
if we did not also acknowledge Cantor Joseph gole for his
many years of service to our congregation. As he transitions
into his new role as our Cantor Emeritus we look forward to
Cantor gole’s continued involvement at Sinai; both in music
of this concert and in the rituals of our lives. we also need to
acknowledge Cantor Arianne Brown who touched so many lives
during her years at Sinai.
I look forward to seeing you at the Concert and at the delicious
Dessert reception that will follow.

a special example of our david and angella nazarian Youth leadership
Program in action:
My name is Ellie Dubin. I am currently at sophomore at Beverly Hills
High School. As a Nazarian Youth Leadership Fellow in 2010, I started a
program to provide musical theater enrichment to children at schools
which have lost their arts funding. It is called "Kesem Shel Shir, the Magic
of Music." My pilot program ran from April to June 2011 at Arlington
Heights Elementary School. My teen staff of high school actors, dancers,
and singers (including a few of my Nazarian Fellow friends, thank you!)
taught 20 elementary students the play Cinderella. The entire experience
was incredibly exciting for the students, the principal and the whole school
community!
This summer I am bringing "Kesem Shel Shir, the Magic of Music" to Israel!
I have partnered with the Youth renewal Fund and will be teaching a twoweek musical theater course in ramla at the Youth renewal Fund's
Ethan H. Freed Learning Center. The center provides academic enrichment
for underprivileged children living in the area. I secured the Disney license
to have the students learn and perform, High School Musical so 20 middle
school students will participate as an English immersion experience! For
information about bringing my program to a particular school with little or
no arts enrichment, contact me at [email protected].
I would like to thank David and Angella Nazarian for their vision and
generosity in creating and funding this incredible opportunity for high
school students. I would also like to thank Sinai Temple, including
rabbi wolpe, rabbi guzik and everyone else who dedicated their time
and efforts towards implementing the fellowship's yearlong activities and
beyond. I look forward to being an active Nazarian Youth Fellow for years
to come.

Rosa Berman Ruder & Lili Shafai, Co-Presidents
Dear friends,
The fiscal year is drawing to a close, and my copresident Lili and I are proud of how much our Sisterhood
has accomplished this past year. we introduced a
number of classes which have been well attended
and had many successful programs and events, such
as our delightful weekend retreat at Camp ramah
last october, our inspiring Shabbaton in February,
our Torah Fund Luncheon in March, a docent tour of
the getty Center in April, our Donor Luncheon in May, and our wonderful monthly Rosh Hodesh dinners
and programs at different members’ homes. we exceeded our goal in raising funds for our Torah Fund
campaign, and raised money for Project outreach, with our volunteers delivering food to elderly and
sick persons in our community. we have catered many beautiful extended Kiddush luncheons for various
lifecycle events.
we have worked hard, we have learned, we had fun, we have shared in the joys of each other’s lifecycle
events, and have been there for each other in times of illness and sadness. Most importantly, we have
established deep bonds of friendship in the process. we will be installing our new board on June 5th
and you are invited. Please contact Dee goozé for reservations at (310) 553-7468. Lili and I will continue
to be Sisterhood co-presidents and most of our board remains in place, with some new additions. we
will start planning new programs and classes very soon and look forward to a great year ahead.
Above all, Lili and I are very grateful to our dedicated members, many in portfolios not mentioned above,
who give their all, above the call of duty, to make things happen for Sisterhood and for the community
at large. we invite you to join Sisterhood and take advantage of the opportunity to find fulfillment in
our very worthwhile projects. when you become a member, you will receive our Sisterhood review,
with details of our many programs.
