In Spain and Spanish America, soccer (fútbol) is a
passion bordering on obsession. Most large and small
cities have their own teams. Many different types of
soccer teams are popular: neighborhood teams, company
teams, soccer club teams, as well as professional teams.
National games are very important and the competition is
fierce. International soccer competitions are occasions for
great patriotic enthusiasm, and soccer teams are revered
as national symbols. In almost every park and empty lot
in every town, boys of all ages can be seen playing
soccer and dreaming of becoming the next international
soccer star.
35
36
Bullfighting (corrida de toros) is prohibited in some Spanish-speaking countries, but it
is still popular in some parts of Spain, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela.
Bullfights date back to the 1700s when Spain built its first bullring. Bullfighting may
have roots in ancient Rome where gladiators fought wild animals for public
entertainment. The corridas are held on Sunday afternoons at 5:00 and each corrida
(six in all) lasts about twenty minutes. When a bullfighter shows good technique, is
graceful, and exposes himself to great danger, spectators yell “¡Olé!” When they are
disappointed, they whistle loudly. In spite of its popularity, many oppose bullfighting as
a cruel sport and would like to see it abolished everywhere.

Carefully tear this sheet out of your booklet and color the four corners with the
correct color. Then cut out the square along the outside edge. With the printed
side down, fold the corners along the diagonal lines so that now you see the
colors and numbers. Be careful not to overlap any edges. Turn over so that the
colors are face down and fold in the corners so that you see the numbers.
Again, be sure not to overlap any edges. Now create the pockets and play.

Spanish Verb Project
Students will…
• Draw and color 10 different pictures depicting things they like to do.
• Make a list of Spanish verbs for the actions depicted.
• Label each picture (in pencil) in the first person singular form (“I” or “Yo”)
of the verb.
To form the yo form of a verb, take off the last two letters of the infinitive (ar,
er, or ir) and add an o. Some verbs are irregular and this doesn’t work. They
are conjugated for you (in parenthesis).
For example:
A picture of a person swimming would be labeled “Yo nado.”It means “I swim.”
A picture of a person riding a horse would be labeled “Yo monto a caballo.” It
means “I ride a horse.
