Qualities of a Successful Team
In the last edition of the “GEG,” I discussed my own ideas on qualities of a successful athlete. This
time, I wanted to share the most important qualities for a TEAM to be successful, but not from my
perspective. Dean Smith was the Head Coach of the University of North Carolina from 19611997. A hall of fame coach, he retired with 879 wins, an NCAA record at the time. His teams won
78% of their games, won two national championships, went to 11 Final Fours, and an amazing 97% of his
players graduated from North Carolina! In his book, The Carolina Way-Leadership Lessons from a Life in
Coaching, Coach Smith shared his insights into what comprises a successful team, which I’ve shared below. Important Upcoming
Dates:
Individual Peak Performance – On great teams each member typically performs at his or
her highest level of ability. Terrible teams, with individuals who might be highly talented, perform

below the talents of their members.
Selflessness– In great teams the individuals become so committed to the mission and goals and
purpose of their teams they lose themselves in the purpose of working to achieve their teams’ mission.
They find their personal satisfaction, pleasure, and reward in achieving the teams’ goals more than their
own interests. Indeed, in this process they become honest about their own strengths and limitations and
what they can do and cannot do. The members of a successful team compete to contribute to the team 
rather than to beat one another. The members of ineffective teams become so frustrated with the teams
that they focus mainly on their own interests and couldn’t care less about what happens to the overall
team. They retain their individual priorities. As long as they are able to blend in personally with the
team, that is good enough for them: they become internally competitive, wanting to win against one another. At this point you have concealment, fighting, and sabotaging, not cooperation.

High Morale– People love coming to work: they enjoy one another’s company and have fun
executing their roles. Energy is high: they come to work full of enthusiasm, and passion for the work

prevails. On terrible teams, people are miserable coming to work: the spirit is dead.
No Fear of Failure– On high performing teams, members are not afraid to fail. Though they
may face major risks and obstacles, they still perform without fear of failure, punishment or shame if they
make mistakes. They have learned that all they can do is their best and that the other team members and
the leaders will accept them for their best efforts, even if they make mistakes. On terrible teams the
members are afraid to fail, so they become cautious, avoiding risk, but they feel stressed, under pressure,
and perform even more poorly.
Mutual Care and Support – Members of great teams care about one another and support
one another personally. They are close and value their friendships as well as their working relationships.
On terrible teams people don’t like one another, they fight against one another, and they openly convey
their mutual disrespect (Smith 130-131).
At TPCA we want to build GREAT teams, and we are excited about the basketball season

NCAA Information
Picture Time!
Did you know that the NCAA’s initial-eligibility academic standards are changing for student-athletes
enrolling at an NCAA Division I university on or after
August 1, 2016 (this year’s high school sophomore
class and younger)? A brief summary of the changes
can be found here.
To assist in getting this message out, we have developed the Initial-Eligibility Resource Index , a new
electronic tool that contains links to the NCAA Eligibility Center’s resources and presentations available free of charge. Please share these materials
broadly with students, parents, coaches, etc.
All of our basketball teams will be having their
Team Pictures done soon! You should be receiving your packets from your coach soon, and
please have them completed and with you on the
day of your pictures. All pictures will be done immediately after school in the Main Gym.

Quick Notes

Grade Checks! Our next grade checks will be processed on Monday, November 18th. Remember, any student with a D or an F in any class will automatically be placed on probation, and will have two-weeks to raise
their grade to a C or higher. If they have not done so, they will be considered ineligible for the following twoweek period.

Coach Needed! We are currently looking for a MS Head Baseball Coach for this Spring! If you are interested, please send your resume to Athletic Director Adam Stevenson at [email protected].

Halftime Performers Needed! If you are a part of a group that is interested in performing at one of our
Varsity Basketball Games this year, we are looking for entertainment! Please contact Athletic Director Adam

Free Cardio at IndyCore– While you’re waiting on your child to finish their workout, why not get in one
of your own? IndyCore Fitness & Wellness is offering free use of their cardio equipment to any TPCA parent
