MATCHING SYNONYMS
Modifications
Use different Synonyms
Encourage your child to use a dictionary to find more synonyms to
make additional lollipops. The grid can therefore become larger, or
you can use different sets for different games.
Write a story
Ask your child to randomly pick six of the original sixteen lollipop
synonyms and then write a story which includes all the words.
Encourage your child to think of other words which have the same
meaning as the synonyms which they have chosen.
How to play
1.
1. This game aims to provide your child with an understanding of
synonyms, using eight word pairs
2. Begin by explaining to your child synonyms are words which
are spelt differently, but have the same meaning, for example Big
and Large.
3. Show your child the synonym word table and ask them to tell
you which words are synonym pairs. This should be relatively
easy as they have been placed side by side in the table.
4. Now cut out all the twelve written synonyms and the twelve
lollipop templates
5. Using the glue, stick each synonym onto the white side of the
lollipop template horizontally across, so there is still room at the
bottom to attach the lollipop stick. Leave to dry momentarily.
6. Now attach each lollipop stick with glue onto the white side of
the lollipop template, so you are left with a blue lollipop on one
side, and the synonym and lollipop stick showing on the other.
7. You are ready to play
8. Randomly place the sixteen lollipops, blue side up, in a four by
four grid. Ask your child to turn over two of the lollipops to
reveal the synonyms. If the two words are synonyms then your
child keeps them, if they are not, your child must turn the sticks
back over and it’s your turn.
9. Keep turning over the lollipops until you have found all eight
word pairs. The winner is the person who finds the most word
pairs.
