Current Performance | The Importance of Being Earnest
Written by Oscar Wilde | Directed by Pat O’Callaghan
Oscar Wilde’s classic, hilariously witty, wittily satirical,
satirically hilarious take on English upper-class manners.
Synopsis: Ernest isn’t really Ernest, he’s Jack (well, he doesn’t actually
know who he is). Algernon isn’t really Ernest either, he’s just
pretending to be. Gwendolen and Cecily both declare they could only
love someone named Ernest. But who, and how earnest, is Ernest?
Remaining Dates: 8pm 24, 25 Feb & 3, 4 Mar. 2pm 26 Feb.

Social Notes: Meet our Member | Clare Kenny Hughes
Clare was born in 1954 at Tullamore N.S.W. Clare moved around a lot during her early
years and this instilled a passion for meeting interesting people and travel and
adventure. After finishing school in QLD she moved to Sydney where she met her first
husband. She shifted to NZ married and had her first child. Due to the weather always
being very cold she returned to sunny Bundaberg and had two more children. Clare
separated from her husband and this is when her acting adventure began. She went to
her first audition at Bundaberg Playhouse but left without auditioning. Clare felt
intimidated. She returned however (after a stern talking to herself) auditioned and
received her first talking part and this instilled a passion for acting.
Clare then moved to Brisbane in 1992 to marry Dean and inherit two step children. Clare immediately
joined Act One Theatre and has been an active member for the last 25 years not only performing on the
stage but in the Sound and Lighting box and Front of House and kitchen duties for various Theatre
Restaurants as well as Host for Theatre Festivals. One of her favourite memories is acting with her
daughter Rose on the stage. Clare loves theatre because you can bring black dots on a white sheet of
paper to life and make that character a real person. Clare retired in 2016 from her working life and also
made the decision to retire from her theatre life and at this stage has never been so busy. A caravan was
purchased and small trips away have begun until her husband retires in 2018 and then the grey nomads
set off on their indefinite trip around Australia. They will eventually settle in Ballina NSW. Clare wonders if
Ballina has a playhouse ?????? ( wink wink )
Social Notes: Meet our Member | Patrick O’Callaghan
Pat lived in Bray Park for thirty years, continually thinking ‘I must go and join that
theatre group down the road at Strathpine.’ Finally, with children grown up and a
bit more time on his hands, he did so in 2003. The first production he was
involved with was The Anniversary, as Stage Manager. Since then, he has
appeared in about twenty productions and also directed several one-act and fulllength plays, including the current performance The Importance of Being Earnest.
Pat retired two years ago after a career mostly in the Public Service and is
enjoying the fruits of retirement, such as mowing the yard, cleaning around the
house, grocery shopping, etc. He and his wife, Joy, have four children and six
grandchildren so a lot of their time is spent entertaining small people, although
they have still found time for a couple of holidays.
Social Notes: Meet our Member | Errol Barnett Errol has performed in amateur theatre groups for more than 50 years, in dramas
and comedies, beginning with Twelfth Night Theatre, Brisbane Independent
Theatre, Pine Rivers Theatre Company, Samford Theatre, and he has enjoyed a
long association with Act 1 Theatre.
Earlier plays of particular note include The Rainmaker, Death Trap, House Guest,
The Proposal and Confusions; and at Act 1, he has appeared in The Foreigner,
Hancock’s Half Hour, After Magritte, She’s Apples, the women’s version of The
Odd Couple, Over the Gate and Twelve Angry Men, not forgetting the festival play
Carrot. Errol has also appeared in many of Act 1’s Theatre Restaurants.

Submitted by Bill Thomas | voluntary work career
My voluntary work career began on 17th December 2001 as assistant groundsman at St Vincent’s Hospital, which was then known as Mt Olivet Hospital at Kangaroo Point in Brisbane, where I still enjoy working
2 to 3 hours every Monday hose-watering plants, pruning bushes and hedges and sweeping up leaves
and other matter and disposing of them. At the hospital, my grounds-keeping boss Jamie helps me with
the grounds-keeping when he’s not busy doing maintenance jobs throughout the hospital with the help of
other maintenance men.
Then my next voluntary job started at the RSPCA at Fairfield, Brisbane in
March 2002. I still work for them for a few hours every Wednesday at Wacol,
where the RSPCA has been located for at least 5 years after the January 2011
floods affected most of the Fairfield RSPCA campus. I have always worked
mostly in the Dogs Adoption section at both places and sometimes I’ve helped
out in the Cats Adoption section also.
I particularly love the interaction I have with the dogs even more than with the
cats. At the RSPCA, my main job is collecting the dogs empty food kongs from
their pens and after washing them, I fill them up with food and put them in the freezer for their breakfast
the following morning. The Dogs Adoption section at Wacol has kitchens for food preparing, fridges and
toilets for disposing of waste.
I used to walk dogs on leads which I loved doing but most of the dogs walking is done by younger volunteers as I keep very busy attending to the dogs in their pens, filling up their water bowls, cleaning up
waste and giving the dogs affection and attention which I also love doing.
The volunteers and the paid animal attendants are very nice people to work with.
Questionnaire
From which famous actresses do these quotes come?
“Being a famous actress may give you a sense of being important, but believe me, it’s just an illusion.”
“Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.”
“I don’t mind living in a man’s world as long as I can be a woman in it.”
“Happy girls are the prettiest girls.”
“I’m selfish, impatient, and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I’m out of control, and at times hard to handle. But if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best.”
From which movies did these lines come?
“Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.”
“I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse.”
“You don't understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I could've been somebody, instead
of a bum, which is what I am.”
”Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore.”
“Here's looking at you, kid.”
“Go ahead, make my day.”
“All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up.”
Answers will be published in our next edition.
