Grass Valley Charter School An EL Education Mentor School Holiday Wreath November21,2016 Crosbie and Katy Jones have created a one-of-a-kind holiday wreath to be auctioned off to raise funds for the garden and outdoor learning center. If you or anyone you know has a very large door, table, wall, or wants to strap this beauty to the hood of your car and drive blindly down the road please feel free to make a bid on this wreath made of ornamental corn! Seriously, if you haven’t seen this in person, make your way to the entryway of the school to check it out. ½ Day This Wednesday (today) In case you don’t make it in to check out the new GVCS Family Calendar, you probably ought to know that Wednesday, November 23rd (the day before Thanksgiving, you know, today) is a ½ day at Charter. Dismissal is at 12:30. We’re hoping that taking this half day will help to offset all the space-time continuum issues initiated by setting our clocks back one hour. Math Night Typically I would start an entry like this with, “In case you missed it…” but not this time. I’m pretty sure you didn’t miss it! The turnout for Math Night was amazing. You guys showed up in force to celebrate all things math. One might say it wasn’t just mathematical…it was mathradical! Whether you were engaging in the math cave with Beth, building polyhedrons, or perhaps you played Reflex Math in the lab – parents and kids alike had a great time going from station to station filling out their passports. Many of you left comments on your Exit Tickets – I have to share some of my favorites. The following comments were shared as positives: •So much fun! •Playing games with Dad. •So many volunteers. •Good way to make math more exciting. •Please do this every year! Walkathon Pledge Sheets Pledge Sheets were sent home in backpacks Friday for a second time. • Check backpacks for pledge sheets. • There's an envelope provided for money collected. • To qualify for prizes return money by the end of the day Monday, November 28th (that's after Thanksgiving). Join Our Crew! Discovery Studies Discovery Studies is looking for a Wednesday afternoon enrichment teacher? Currently, they have a PE, drama, art, and sewing teacher. One more is needed. Chess Club Chess club is back! Paul Wright is hosting the Chess Club for 4th grade and up. Chess club will be held Thursdays right after school. New to chess? Don’t worry. Paul will teach you all the “Wright” moves. GVCS Family Calendar Want to know what’s coming up at GVCS without having to wade through Mr. Maddock’s latest wordy edition of The Howl? Done! We now have a “family calendar” in the hallway just past the entryway. It should keep you up to date on all that is and will be Grass Valley Charter School. Stop by, say hi to some fellow parents, drop a tall black coffee by the front office, and check the calendar for some ways to get involved. Parents Night Out Maybe you want to do some holiday shopping, perhaps you want to catch a movie, or maybe you just think the idea of staying home on a Friday night while someone else entertains your kids sounds like pure magic. Either way, you can have a night off and leave your kids to the 8th graders going to Washington DC/New York this summer. December 9th is the next Parents Night Out/Kids Night In. Stay tuned for how to sign your kids up. Nevada County Spelling Tournament Over the past couple of weeks teams of 5th-8th grade students participated in the Nevada County Spelling Tournament. Grass Valley Charter students represented in grand fashion. The 5th/ 6th grade team did an exceptional job with Ibrahim Shelton taking 3rd place. The 7th/8th grade team crushed it taking 2nd place in the competition and GVCS’s very own Oliver Nelson taking first place overall! Way to go Coyotes! Squeeze the Day and Help the 6th Graders! As part of their expedition studying bears and salmon, Ms. Rachel’s kindergarten class reached out to an authentic audience, me. This class of mostly 5 year olds surmised that Mr. Maddock needed to know more about the similarities and differences of brown bears and black bears. So they did what kindergartners do best, they researched, created a chart, and then put their “teacher” hats on and educated their principal. I visited Crew 4 this week and the kids took turns explaining how black bears are similar, yet also different from brown bears. I have to say, the whole experience was pretty awesome. We have a budding crew of researchers, data collectors, and teachers among us.
