Introducing John Ogilvie High School
MONTHLY PRIZE DRAW CLUB
In order to raise very much needed funds for the school, JOHS PTA are organising a
prize draw/lottery syndicate which will be open to everyone. Each month a draw will
take place and a lucky winner will win £100. The administration of this fundraiser must
be kept to a minimum and therefore the payments will be made to the PTA via regular
bank standing order or direct payment.
Details are as follows:
 The cost per person is £3.00 per month, and payments should reach the account by
no later than the 25th of each month.
 The draw will take place on the last Friday of the month, at the school, the winner
will be notified on the same day and arrangements will be made for the prize money
to be paid.
 Each person in the draw must quote a reference number (which will be provided) on
their payment, this is so that the PTA can easily recognise who has paid.
If you would like to take part in this prize draw (which has the potential to raise a huge
amount of money for the school) you can let us know in a few different ways.
All we need from you is your name, contact details and how many entries you would like
to make. This is open to EVERYONE, parents, uncles, teachers, aunties, grannies,
neighbours, friends..... The quickest and most convenient way to contact is by email or
text. However, you may also complete the slip below and hand it in to the school.
EMAIL: [email protected]
TEXT: 07900 904033
PLEASE NOTE YOU MUST BE GIVEN A DRAW NUMBER TO QUOTE ON YOUR BANK

EVA FANDOS BELTRAN
It is with great sadness that I tell you of the death of Eva Beltran who many will
remember as one of the key English teachers from Francisco Tárrega School in
Vila-Real who spearheaded the twinning between our two schools.
Eva was a truly wonderful, generous lady who had two lovely children one of
whom was an adopted young orphan girl from Russian descent.
When I visited Vila-Real with the party in 2008 it was Eva who gave me lodgings
in her house. Eva had been battling with cancer for some time and unfortunately
we were told on 21st August that she had finally lost that fight.
Please keep Eva and her family in your thoughts and prayers.
In the picture below from the St Andrews Hospice Race in 2010, Eva is seen on
the left in front of Des Reilly. The lad standing far right is her son, Jaume.
Eternal rest......

Art Department
Gallery of Modern Art
Following our very successful S2 visit to the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art last
year, the Art and Design department introduced the S1 textile course by taking the
whole of first year to the gallery in August 2013.
The pupils are
studying the work
of French Artist
Niki De Saint
Phalle and the
fact that there is
currently an
exhibition of her
work in GOMA
was perfect. The
pupils were on
their best
behaviour and a
credit to our
school as they
spent the day in
a variety of
workshops
involving 2D, 3D
and video
recording.
They were also introduced to the prints of Ian Hamilton Finley and work by local artist
Michael Fullerton. The whole experience provided plenty of inspiration to start the year
off in the Department of Art and Design.

A big congratulations to Amanda Toms who was chosen to exhibit at the National
Advanced Higher Exhibition at Strathclyde University‟s Collins Gallery.
This puts her in the top 2% of candidates in Scotland.
Well done Amanda.
Mr P Johnston
Maths Department
The Maths Department would like pupils to bring a scientific calculator to school.
Also, they intend to use Nintendos in class and ask parents to contact the school
if they have any concerns.
S3 Parents’ Evening – 8th October 2013
All S3 pupils have an appointment sheet and should be
arranging interview times with their class teacher.

Senior Awards Ceremony
We held our annual Senior Awards
Ceremony last week and were delighted to
have as Guest Speaker none other than the
celebrated Composer, Patrick Doyle,
creator of the soundtracks for a whole host
of blockbuster movies such as Brave, Harry
Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Bridget Jones‟
Diary, THOR, Hamlet and Henry V as well
as the celebrated adaptation of Jane
Austen‟s Sense and Sensibility.
Patrick spoke to the Senior Award Winners
of the importance of ambition, one of the
school‟s adopted tenets of excellence and
he told them;
“When I was at school ambition was often seen as a dirty word. You
felt almost embarrassed to say you had ambitions but it’s different
now.
Scottish Schools seem to promote ambition much better……. Believe
in yourself and amazing things can happen in your lives.”
The school was also delighted to announce on the night that Mr Doyle has gifted the school
a £2000 sponsorship to support musical students across the school.
The school‟s Senior Award Ceremony celebrates not only the academic attainment
of its senior pupils but also their broader achievements including their contribution
to the arts, their fundraising activities, their commitment to their local and wider
community and parishes and their leadership contribution to the school.

First Direct Bank Grant
The partnership between First Direct Bank and John Ogilvie High School has once
again resulted in an excellent financial boost for the pupils of the school as the
company has generously supported the work of the school by awarding John
Ogilvie a grant for £5,284 to support important Health and Well Being projects
across the school. More specifically, the money will fund at least 2 disabled sports
wheelchairs as well a range of important and much-needed sporting equipment. In
the picture Linda McInulty, Operations Manager for First Direct and Leanne Kerr,
Recruitment Consultant, are seen handing over the cheque to David Robertson
from the School Fundraising Committee. Also pictured are Sports ambassadors,
Ryan Ferrey, Stephen Gemmell and Sophie Young and Kyle McAteer from the
Under 16 Football Squad as well as Daniel Amato and Emma Rooney who are
delighted with the news that the school will now be providing sports wheelchairs for
disabled athletes.
Operations Manager, Linda McInulty commented, “We are delighted to continue to
support the great work done in the school particularly as on this occasion the school
is targeting the needs of disabled athletes.” Eddie Morrison, Head Teacher added ,
“The support we receive from First Direct as part of their commitment to Community
Projects is outstanding and as part of this project we are delighted that volunteers
from First Direct will also be giving of their time to support a range of Health and Well
being projects across the school. As an organisation, our experience is that they
really do put their stated commitment to the community into practice and once gain
the pupils of John Ogilvie are the beneficiaries of this commitment.”

IDL
Our Planet Earth
S2 IDL pupils were
recently visited by Julie
Richmond, South
Lanarkshire Council‟s
carbon reduction officer.
Julie explained to pupils
the Council‟s policy on
carbon reduction
including the use of
environmentally friendly
electric cars. Pupils were
offered a demonstration
of the car and
commented how quiet the
car was. (picture below)
Our pupils also continued
to maintain our school
grounds by planting more
shrubs, herbs and bulbs.
Our „bee and butterfly‟
gardens that were planted
in June are flourishing.
Pupils have been
monitoring these areas
report frequent visits by
bees and some very
beautiful butterflies.
A volunteering opportunity – The school has
been given a grant by Action Earth (supported
by Scottish Natural Heritage) to continue our
good work within the school grounds/local
community.
If you would like to volunteer an hour of your
time to help this project grow, contact Mrs
McDaid ASAP.

IDL - Our Planet Earth continued
S2 IDL pupils recently visited the Udston
and Glenlee Woods. Pupils learned about
the improvements made by South
Lanarkshire Council and the 'Friends of
Udston and Glenlee Woods'. Jim McHugh
from the 'friends' group discussed the
improvements made to the woods and how
John Ogilvie High pupils have helped over
the past 5 years. Jim also discussed the
plants, wildlife and history of the area
which our pupils found fascinating.

School Parking
The school car park and the street (Farm Road) at the front entrance have
become a major concern for safety reasons and for local residents’ access.
Parking in Farm Road at peak times, particularly at the end of the school
day, creates traffic queues, frustration and a very dangerous situation for
our children.
Parking in the school car park in non allocated spaces and close to the gate
also creates frustration, further danger for our children and causes
problems for the buses.
If you transport your child to/from school by car please try-
PARK and STRIDE
Why not park near the school and let
your child walk the rest of the way?
If you care about our children’s safety then
please avoid this very dangerous, daily situation.
19
Further to the aboveInternational Walk to School Month – October
All Schools, Nurseries and Leisure Centres across South Lanarkshire are being invited to
participate in International Walk to School Month throughout October.
We would like to encourage children and their parents to walk to school (or park further away
and walk some of the way) thus gaining benefits to their health, practical road safety
awareness for children and making a positive action to reducing pollution.
Thousands of children from across the UK will be joining forces with over 40 countries
worldwide this October to celebrate the benefits of walking to school during International Walk
to School Month.
International Walk to School Month has valuable links with Health Promoting Schools and ECO
Schools, and can be included in a School Travel Plan. A School Travel Plan aims to lower the
number of car journeys being made to school, thereby reducing congestion at the school gates
and improving road safety and the environment around the school. A School Travel Plan
involves the whole of the school, staff, parents and pupils working together to promote
sustainable travel modes, for example walking and cycling.
The website www.livingstreets.org.uk/walk-with-us/walk-to-school/international-walk-to-schoolmonth contains further information, curricular links and downloads to support International Walk
to School Month. There are excellent sections for schools, parents and children too!


Green or Black v-necked sweatshirt/knitted jumper (optional)

I would also ask that pupils refrain from wearing excessive
jewellery, large earrings, chunky bracelets or rings which
straddle more than one finger, as these can accidentally
compromise health and safety of other pupils.

Pupils are asked to refrain from wearing make-up.

In addition, pupils should not wear any item which advertises a particular
brand name or which conceals the school tie. In particular, the brands of
Playboy and FCUK should not be worn at any time within the school as these
are not considered compatible with the ethos of our Faith Community.
