collections Recent Acquisitions Continued growth of collections provides users with the best information for their research needs. KSL strives to acquire materials that enrich core undergraduate, graduate and research-level collections across all disciplines, as well as to strengthen and grow new interdisciplinary programs and research in emerging areas. + medeival facsimiles KSL staff worked with the university’s Art History Department to select significant medieval facsimiles to add to the library’s collection. Although most are available online with useful interfaces, the facsimiles as physical objects and the commentary volumes are valuable additions for scholars. The books of hours, in particular, provide an excellent source to learn about the church calendar and liturgy. Included were Las Cantigas de Santa María (pictured left), The Hours of Jeanne D’Evreux, The Bamberg Apocalypse, Les Tres Riches Heures du Duc de Berry and Roman de la Rose. america’s historical newspapers Working with faculty members from the university’s History Department, KSL purchased America’s Historical Newspapers, Series 2 & 3. The series include large collections of newspapers from the mid-18th to the early 20th century. Series 2 covers U.S. newspapers from 1758-1900 and focuses on the time period during which the number of American newspapers rose dramatically. Series 3 covers 1829-1922, focusing on Reconstruction, the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era. Both series offer several hundred thousand fully searchable issues of publications from all 50 states. + collected works of bach & mozart Kulas Music Library, a branch of KSL, added recent volumes of collected works of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (17561791) to its collection. Besides presenting a definitive version of a musical work, the works help to clarify the chronology of the composers’ output and sort out the surviving primary source material for a given musical work. Started in the 1950s, the acquired sets are currently near completion and together number over 300 volumes, including volumes of both editorial commentary and scores. + ieee wiley e-books KSL has purchased perpetual access to over 600 IEEE-Wiley e-books from 1974-2013. The collection spans numerous content areas including bioengineering, power and energy and communication technologies, among other growing areas of research. The collection includes practical handbooks, introductory and advanced texts, reference works and professional books. Cutting-edge titles on emerging technologies, authored by leaders in the field are also included. IEEE is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. The Pursuit of Lifelong Learning alumni news KSL is committed to expanding and improving our Alumni Services to support lifelong personal and professional growth. All CWRU alumni are eligible for these benefits, which include access to the library, its collections and services. KSL’s Alumni Services are all now offered free of charge thanks to a partnership with the Alumni Association. We encourage alumni who are in the area to stop by KSL to have a cup of coffee or snack in the café and attend library events. They may use guest computers to access research databases, e-books, digital journals and statistical datasets. By signing up for an Alumni Card, local users can borrow items from the collections, use the Freedman Center and take CaseLearns classes, and all alumni around the world can use our vast electronic resources. While it is not uncommon for universities to provide reference services to alumni, KSL’s program allows alumni to retain access to a suite of selected research databases. The suite’s databases cover many subject areas and can be accessed globally. For assistance in navigating these resources, Research Services Librarians can communicate with alumni via email, instant messaging, phone, LiveChat or in person. The latest additions to our Alumni Database Suite include: • E-book Collection via EBSCO: varied disciplines. • FRANCIS: multidisciplinary / multilingual humanities & social sciences. • Project MUSE: digital humanities scholarly texts from leading societies & university presses. more about alumni services: library.case.edu/ksl/services/alumni The Cleveland Play House donated its archives (over 1,000 boxes of content) to KSL in 2011. It’s never too late to learn something new. In coordination with the Laura and Alvin Siegal Lifelong Learning Program, KSL offered a series of continuing education classes during the Spring 2013 semester entitled, The Legacy and Future of the Cleveland Play House . The class explored the impact of long-lived cultural institutions, using the upcoming centennial of the Cleveland Play House as an example. KSL’s recent acquisition of the Play House archives provides eye-witness evidence of its history and serves as a key resource for the class. Through a combination of readings, guest speakers and discussions, participants consider the Play House’s legacy from the varied perspectives of scholars, artists, community members and institutional stewards.
