North Lees /Stanage: Delivery of Cultural Heritage Initiatives Stage 1

North Lees /Stanage: Delivery of Cultural Heritage Initiatives
Stage 1 – Data delivery and research
Lidar survey, from A57 in the north to Burbage Edge/Fox House in the south, to
inform all works and provide a landscape context for the enhanced interpretation of
the estate
Archaeological Survey of the estate:
Review, revise and up-date JWB archaeological survey of the Estate, to include
assessment of condition of all recognised cultural heritage features and
accommodate input from Bill Gordon.
Grey reports
Production of detailed overview reports drawing together our current understanding
of the North Lees/Stanage landscape, and its immediate contextual, environs, to
provide an extensive database of information that can be used in a wide range of
ways, and wide range of media, to inform, enable understanding and enhance
enjoyment people derive from visiting and engaging with the Estate.
To include:
1. Results of Lidar survey
2. Archaeological Survey results
3. Compilation and assessment of sources identified by Bill Gordon
4. Prehistoric, Romano-British, Early Medieval research
5. Medieval/Post-Medieval research
6. Modern/Social research
Stage 2: Conservation
The sites where we expect works to take place include at this stage the following.
(However this list will be subject to change dependent on the results of the data
research proposed.)
Paper Mill – conservation of upstanding remains
Romano-British site
Chapel – excavation/conservation
These works will require survey, excavation, consolidation and conservation in
addition to archaeological recording. It is proposed that these works are led by a
professional archaeological team but with elements of the work used as
educational/training events training enabling members of the local community and
wider communities of interest to gain skills that they can apply elsewhere on the
estate and in the Peak District/country. These skills will include survey and
excavation skills, stone conservation and replacement, stone masonry work,
drystone walling, lime mortar use, grassland conservation, vegetation control and
management (particularly non-chemical bracken control), in addition to
archaeological recording and report writing. At the Paper/lead mill site we anticipate
a 2 week excavation/conservation project each year for 3 years.
The following are also necessary:
Cruck barn building survey
Estate Field boundary assessment/recording, possibly again with the involvement of
the local community
An additional site where works could be necessary is Dennis Knoll where further
thinning could prove useful in the understanding and conservation of the Sheepwash
Bank scheduled site.
Stage 3 Information/Interpretation
At this stage we are anticipating:
1. 4 Specific thematic/topic guides
2. 4 Interpretation panels – subject to our discussions on how appropriate these are
3. Website/social media provision
4. Phone apps
5. A Popular publication
