SEVEN DAYS IN VOLCANO COUNTRY
DAY ONE—Arrive in Portland midafternoon, The Crater Lake Region—The Crater Lake
Oregon’s largest city. Explore Portland on
your own by the MAX or using the Portland
Hop-On Hop-Off Big Pink Trolley Tour with
visits to: Powell’s City of books, Lan Su Chinese Gardens, shop at Pioneer Square and
Portland Art Museum.
Region is home, of course, to Crater Lake - a
shimmering body of water that fills the
caldera of Mount Mazama. The lake fills a
gaping hole left by one of the earth's largest
explosion in 8,000 years. As the northern
jewel of the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway,
Crater Lake can stun visitors with its beauty.
The lake, which is the deepest in the United
States, can be explored in many ways,
including taking a boat to Wizard Island. We
will overnight at Crater Lake Lodge – in the
morning you’ll have plenty of opportunity to
take pictures on your two hour Rim Tour
before continuing on to Fort Klamath.
Portland Walking Tours – Epicurean
Excursions or Flavor Street Tours. A unique
and delicious walking tour where you’ll taste
the foods and sip the drinks – while discovering Portland’s amazing culinary scene.
For the adventurous take a kayak tour at
Malone Springs near Rocky Point with Roe
Outfitters or just let go on Crater Lake Zipline
with nine zips, two sky bridges and two
repels. Continue on to Running Y Ranch
Resort for a Cowboy BBQ and overnight.
DAY TWO—We stop at Woodburn Company
Stores for outlet shopping with over 100
stores. In the afternoon we’ll continue on to
Crater Lake National Park where you’ll spend
the night and start your journey on the
Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway.
DAY THREE—At Fort Klamath you will have
opportunities to learn about the Modoc
Indians and their struggles with settlers.
As you catch glimpses of Mount McLoughlin
and Mount Scott along the Byway - remember
that you are entering into a land of powerful
upheaval where natural beauty and adventure are plentiful.

The Klamath Basin, Tulelake, & Lava Beds
Region—This region offers a diverse selection
of activities from wildlife viewing to
spelunking. Enter the Klamath Basin where
wildlife viewing is available at the Lower
Klamath National Wildlife Refuge and the
Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Both refuges have self-guided driving tour routes and
are home to huge numbers of wintering bald
eagles. The Refuge Visitors Center on Hill
Road has a vast information base regarding
the species that live and migrate to the refuges as well as an interpretive area.

At Lava Beds National Monument, a band of
Modoc Indians used the harsh volcanic landscape to hold off the U.S. Army in the Modoc
Indian War of 1872-73. The Visitors Center
has information about the war and Captain
Jack's Stronghold, which the Modocs used as
a fortress. The Lava Beds is home to hundreds
of caves created by
underground lava
flows during the creation of the Medicine
Lake shield volcano.
Lassen Volcanic National Park is home to
smoking fumaroles, meadows freckled with
wildflowers, clear mountain lakes, and
numerous volcanoes. Jagged peaks tell the story
of its eruptive past while hot water continues to
mold the land. Lassen Volcanic offers
opportunities to discover the wonder and
mysteries of volcanoes and hot water for
visitors willing to explore the undiscovered.

depending on snow fall. Overnight in Red Bluff.
The Mount Shasta Region—The Mount DAY FIVE—Depart early morning for San
Shasta Region offers travelers the opportunity

Stroll around the Fisherman’s Wharf area with
its many attractions, such as Pier 39, the Bay
Aquarium and the Wax Museum. Get up close
and personal with the Golden Gate Bridge and
Alcatraz Island on one of the bay cruises that
operate from the Wharf. In the evening, may we
suggest a pre-dinner cocktail at Harry Denton’s
Starlight Room, accompanied by dazzling views
of the city, and followed by dinner at one of the
many restaurants in the Union Square area.
