(For Alumni/Open to All classes omit as needed) COURSE DESCRIPTION Tolstoy considered Anna Karenina his only true novel. Deeply influenced by George Eliot’s Middlemarch, Anna Karenina counterpoints the classically tragic story of Anna, struggling against the bonds of her stultifying marriage in the face of her first experience of deep passion, with that of Levin, whose ostensibly happier story is no less a struggle to find deeper meaning in the ordinariness of everyday life and relationships. We will read the novel closely, exploring Tolstoy’s characters, discussing the individual stories and the nuances of their juxtapositions, using the Pevear & Volokhonsky translation. Please read Part 1 for the first class. REQUIRED TEXTS 1. Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina. –translated by Ricard Pevear & Larissa Volokhonsky. Penguin Classics, ISBN 978‐
