University of Utah School of Medicine provides
robust educational and community outreach
opportunities state-wide. Key programs ensure
an adequate health care workforce, and provide
a pathway for students primarily in grades K–12
in underserved communities (rural and urban)
to prepare for and achieve their career goals.
Facts about the Office of Inclusion and Outreach (OIO)
U of U medical students provided 14,404 hours of service
to communities in Utah during the 2011–12 academic
year. Activities included work in free clinics, at health
fairs, in community settings, and with K–12 educational
programs. Our medical students have interacted with
and taught more than 10,100 students/participants
through the office of Inclusion and Outreach Programs,
including our Utah Rural Outeach Project (UROP).
The School of Medicine has also partnered with both the
Salt Lake City Library and the Utah Department of Health
to leverage our community health education outreach
programs. This expands our outreach beyond grades K–12
to include adults. More partnerships are in development.
Facts about Utah Area Health Education Centers (AHEC)
The University of Utah administers Utah AHEC. Since it’s
establishment, more than 100,000 students have been
introduced to health careers. We have trained 3,500
medical students, residents, and other advanced health
professions students in underserved communities. We
also have 350 preceptors across the state who have
supervised clinical training in their communities.
