of a loved one. Please feel free to join us for one of these
informal meetings. If you have suffered a recent loss and are
not quite ready to attend our meetings, please feel free to call
Josephine with any questions or concerns or just to talk about
your feelings at the phone number listed below. We also
encourage you to invite anyone you know who has suffered the
loss of a loved one to attend our meetings. Please note that
anything we discuss either on the phone or at our meetings is
held in the strictest confidence. For more information about our
group, please contact Josephine Perniciaro at 5185966886. By Their Fruits: This is Martin Luther King’s weekend. Blacks
and many others celebrate his speeches to act on the truth
that we are all created equal. Up to that time, the black family
was intact. Today, 70% of black babies are born to unmarried
mothers. What happened? Racist Margaret Sanger, founder
of Planned Parenthood, put most of her clinics in black
neighborhoods so that fewer babies would be born, thus
interfering with marital trust. When a government undermines
a father’s love and commitment to his family, people become
rootless. From the first century, Christians have protected
children. Ironically, a march for reproductive rights is
scheduled on the feast of St. Agnes in Washington, DC. Pray
for God’s love to convert deadly selfishness.

15, 2017 Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
Since September of this year, our RCIA
team members have been meeting each
Sunday morning with five people who
are interested in joining the Catholic
Church. During our time with these
inquirers we have been sharing faith
stories, answering questions and
discovering how Jesus is involved in our
daily lives. On Sunday, January 22 at our 10:30 Mass these people will
publically express their desire to follow the way of Jesus and
to move forward in their RCIA journey. The ceremony that
celebrates this is called the Rite of Welcome. We would like
to introduce these inquirers to you. ♦ Kirk Putnam is the father of two teen aged boys.
Recently, he has undergone many changes is his life and
he is searching to find where God is calling him. Kirk was
baptized in the Methodist faith. He has recently started
working at Hannaford Supermarket and at Cole’s
Collision.
♦ Leo Scofield comes from a background in the Mormon
faith. He and his daughter, Novella, have been attending
Mass at St. Mary’s since the summer. They are
searching for a welcoming faith community. Leo is
employed as a driver in Saratoga.
♦ Novella Scofield is 16 years old and a student at Ballston
Spa High School. She is Leo’s daughter and like him was
attending the Mormon Church. She shares her father’s
desire to know God and to live a life of faith. Novella
loves to dance.
♦ Mary Robinson is the oldest of 10 children and was
baptized here at St. Mary’s but has never been
confirmed. She is a registered nurse caring for older
patients. Mary’s husband, Rich is a lifelong St. Mary’s
parishioner.
♦ Alexis Fischer has never been baptized but her family has
Baptist roots. She feels a connection with Pope Francis
and is impressed by his open spirit. Alexis has recently
become an independent real estate agent with Keller
Williams.

Full Day PreK News at St. Mary's School
December was a very busy and fun month for Mrs. Allen's
Full Day PreK class! We enjoyed playing in the snow with
our friends and getting ready for Christmas! We collected
60 boxes of cake mix and frosting from the generous SMS
community to donate to the local food pantry to celebrate
and honor Baby Jesus' birthday. When we return to
school it will be our 71st day together and we will be
looking forward to our 100th Day of School and
celebrating all we have learned so far! We hope you all
have a peaceful and joyfilled 2017!

♦ Sunday, January 22, 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time 9:30 am One of the greatest acts of charity is to pray for the living
and the dead, and the greatest and most powerful prayer we
have is the Mass. For that reason, all are encouraged to
have Mass offered for our loved ones who have died, or for
the living who have some need. Available dates are posted
in the Social Hall on the wall in the rear corridor along with
Mass intention forms. If you have any questions, please see
Marie Farrington, Virginia Sawicki or Don Knuth.
We thank you for your sacrificial

Faith Formation
Why are Catholic and Protestant Bibles different?
Catholic Bibles contain²and have always contained²
all of the books of the Bible that have been
traditionally accepted by Christians dating back to the
time of Jesus. These accepted books total 46 in the
Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament. Protestant Bibles, however, have seven fewer books
in their Old Testament. These seven books excluded
in the Protestant Bible are Baruch, Sirach, 1 and 2
Maccabees, Tobit, Judith and the Wisdom of
Solomon, plus portions of Esther and Daniel. These
books were rejected by Protestant Reformers in the
1500s because elements in these books did not
support certain Protestant theology and doctrines.
Prior to the sixteenth century, however, all Christians
used Bibles containing all 46 books of the Old
Testament.

Health Ministry ² Laughing
Sarah said, "God has made
laughter or me; everyone
who hears will laugh with
me." Genesis 21:6
Laughing is good for your health. Laughter,
happiness and a sense of humor actually help
keep you healthy.
Researchers found that laughter releases feel
good betaendorphins. They trigger the
release of nitric oxide, which dilates blood
vessels and increases blood flow throughout
the body ± including to and from the heart.
Nitric oxide also protects the heart by reducing
inflammation and preventing formation of
cholesterol plaque. The researchers said the
effects of laughter on blood vessels are similar
to the benefits of aerobic exercise or the use of
cholesterollowering drugs like statins. The
difference is that laughter is spontaneous and
has an immediate effect. Laughter also can reduce stress hormones,
including cortisol and epinephrine, and it boosts
the number of antibodyproducing cells which
help fight disease. By making humor a regular
part of your life, you can have a big impact on
your own health. ~Benico Barzilai, Cardiologist
Exercises: Try laughing for no reason ± driving
alone in your car, walking, working at home.
Or, try it when sitting with “understanding”
family members; laugh continually for no
reason. See if they end up joining in even
though they don’t know why. You will all
benefit.
