MISSION | To alleviate hunger through the gathering and distribution of food while encouraging self-sufficiency, collaboration, advocacy and education. SPRING 2015 “Thanks to St. Mary’s Food Bank, we won’t go hungry.” When they lost everything, Dan and Angel didn’t know how they’d survive. Angel knows what it’s like to go without food. And she hates it. “Now We Know We Won’t Go Hungry” “There’s nothing worse,” she says, “than having to tell your family, ‘I’m sorry. We have nothing to eat today.’” “We only go there if we have nothing to eat and no way to change that,” Angel says. “Now, knowing that we won’t go hungry makes me feel so much better.” Back on the East Coast, Angel and her husband Dan didn’t have much to begin with. They dreamed of a better life out West, packed up everything they owned, hopped on a bus, and hit the road . . . only to have everything stolen during a stop in Baltimore. They were left with nothing. They lived on the streets for months, trying to get back on their feet. They often went hungry. Angel remembers picking up a peanut butter and jelly sandwich off the ground and eating it right away. “I hoped it hadn’t been poisoned, but honestly I didn’t care. We were so hungry.” “My husband and I both cried the first time we went to St. Mary’s. We had gone without any food for two days. That night I made ribs, mashed potatoes, and a salad! It’s funny how much you appreciate food when it’s not something you get every day.” “Thanks to St. Mary’s, we’ll never go hungry again.” Dan and Angel saved up enough to continue their journey, and they ended up in Phoenix. They were homeless for a while, but now they rent a small bedroom in someone’s home with furniture made out of boxes. They’re both working and saving up for a better future. In the meantime, the food they receive from St. Mary’s helps them get through when they need it most. Angel and Dan lived here, behind this store, for months. Stamp Out Hunger Please leave some food for your letter carrier to pick up on Saturday, May 9, for the “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive. The annual event started in Phoenix in the late 1970s and has since spread nationwide, collecting a billion pounds of food over the last three decades. This food drive is critical for St. Mary’s. Donations typically dwindle during the summer, even as demand increases while children are out of school. Items most needed: canned fruit and vegetables, soups, meals in a can, pasta, peanut butter, tuna, rice, and cereal. For more information, visit HelpStampOutHunger.com or please contact us at 602.343.3169. Tee Up to Help Feed the Hungry A Letter From Our President and Chief Executive Officer . . . Beverly B. Damore I usually take time to share a story with you about a client, but something powerful happened recently that I want to tell you about. It’s a note from a donor. Ray wrote to us to let us know that he was sending in a donation, but was almost apologetic about it. He wrote, “I know that it is just a small donation, but I am just a mechanic.” That really struck me. “Just.” Is it “just a child” that we are helping? Is the food we provide “just a meal?” That’s not how I see it. At St. Mary’s Food Bank, we are fortunate to have many friends. They come in the form of grocery stores, manufacturers, offices and schools that do food drives, volunteers, donors that give large cash donations and donors (many, many of them) that give gifts in the $10, $25, and $50 range. And it matters. It ALL matters. We are actually able to stretch $1 and use it to provide seven meals. But I would never call it “just $1.” That is seven meals — enough to feed a small family for an entire day. Ray is important to us. So are Carl, Debra and Marty (three donors who recently gave gifts to us). And so are you. Thank you for caring, Who Comes to St. Mary’s? The 14th Annual St. Mary’s Golf Classic will be held May 7 at Moon Valley Country Club, one of the top private courses in Arizona. All proceeds will go to help feed hungry children in our community. This shamble format event will be memorable for both sponsors and golfers. Greens fees, cart, range balls, lunch, drinks, and a commemorative shirt are provided. Prizes will be awarded. Join us for $350 per player or $1,200 per foursome. Sponsorships are available. Play is limited to 128 golfers, so don’t delay. D ay after day, Hattie sets up shop in her front yard, trying to sell the throw pillows she makes by hand. MARY’S FOOD BANK “Too Much Month at the End of the Money” L For privacy purposes, name and photo have been changed. ike many single moms, Maria knows all too well what it’s like to run out of money — and have an empty fridge — at the end of the month. She works hard at her job as a dance instructor, teaching the waltz, fox trot, and other moves to adults. She gets paid weekly and receives a little help from her in-laws. But it’s barely enough to pay the bills and take care of her two young sons, ages 7 and 9. Some months — like this one — Maria comes up short. She says it’s a case of “too much month at the end of the money.” That’s when she turns to St. Mary’s Food Bank, even when it’s a little hard on her pride. “This is not me,” she said while picking up some food recently. “I’m usually the one helping others. Every Sunday, I give whatever I have in my wallet to the church. It might just be a few dollars, but I always give.” So Maria comes to the food bank only when she has to. And when she does, she’s always pleasantly surprised at her Thank you for helping single moms like Maria feed their families. range of choices, including many meats and fresh fruits and vegetables. Maria was all smiles as she walked away, her arms loaded with food. “Tonight,” she said, “I am going to make a nice dinner for my boys.” Three Pillars of a Food Bank Contributions at St. Mary’s Food Bank come from three main sources: DONATIONS VOLUNTEERS FOOD Each month, volunteers help sort and pack millions of pounds of food. Without that help, we’d have to hire 150 full-time employees to do that work. Most of the food distributed — about 6 million pounds per month — is donated from Arizona farms, from manufacturers, grocery stores and from food drives. $ Your donations help to buy food in bulk, put fuel in our trucks, and keep the warehouse running — making it possible to provide 7 meals for every $1.
