Y Ready, Set, READ!
Read the passage. Then answer the questions.
For the sixth-grade science fair, I chose to explore the idea of
hydroponics. Hydroponics is the growing of plants in water with nutrients,
but without the use of soil. Using this method, scientists can grow plants in
inhospitable places like the arctic, the desert, or in a spaceship.
I bought three plants, all the same kind and size. I potted one of
them in soil and watered it regularly. I potted one in sand and watered it
regularly, too. I set the roots of the third plant in water enhanced with the
nutrients soil would otherwise provide. I put all three plants on the same
windowsill so each got the same amount of sun.
I measured plant heights every day. I observed that after two weeks,
the plant in the sand was alive, but not healthy. The plant in the soil had
grown nicely. But the plant in the enriched water grew to be the tallest and
hardiest of the three.
I constructed a line graph to compare plant growth, and I provided a
list of all materials and the added nutrients. My reward: a first-place prize!
