KEYS***Thomas B. Reed was the new speaker of the House and opened the 51st Billion Dollar
congress one that legislated many expensive projects
The populist party emerged in 1892 from disgruntled farmers, their main call was via free coinage
of silver. The Depression of 1893 caused 8,000 American business houses collapsed in six
months, and Railroads went to the hands of deceivers
Had Cleveland died in surgery, Adlai E. Stevenson (a paper money man) would have caused
inflation everywhere. Cleveland was embarrassed after letting J.P Morgan help him out with
depression, and by the Wilson-Gorman Tariff, where he failed to lower the tariff.

1)What did presidents of the 4 largest railroads decide to do in 1877? How
did this effect the average worker(s)?
In 1877 the presidents of the 4 largest railroads decided to reduce wages by
10% creating chaos
The failure of the railroad showed the weakness of the labor movement since
there were constant disputes between Chinese and Irish workers
THIS HURT THEM GREATLY! THE CHINESE WOULD STILL
WORK!!
2)What law was passed by congress in 1879? What did this later lead to and
how do you feel about this today Hint: PC)?
In 1879 Congress passed a bill severely restricting the Chinese immigrants
who worked on railroads, but Hayes vetoed the bill
After Hayes left office, the Chinese Exclusion Act 1882 was the first law
limiting immigration!
3)Who was elected as President in 1880 and what later happened to him?
In the election of 1880 Republicans nominate James A. Garfield, Democrats
nominate Winfield S. Hancock
Garfield dies from a bullet to his head
4)What was the Pendleton Act of 1883 and how does this Compare and
Contrast with the Tammany Hall Era Appointments?
The Pendleton Act of 1883 stated that government jobs should be awarded
on the basis of merit. THIS IS THE OPPOSITE OF TAMMANY
CORRUPTION AND HOW THINGS SHOULD BE!
5) Why was the campaign of 1884 a “Slippery One” according to the text?
Keep in mind and discuss the fragility of our nation. PRESIDENST ARE
BEING SHOT AND STUFF IN CRAZY!!!The Campaign of 1884 was the
most slippery campaign of all Democrats nominated Grover Cleveland and
the Republicans nominated James G. Blaine New York chose and a
Republican, insulting the Irish and the Democrats won Grover was a fan of
the Laissez Faire policy and capitalism, he named to former confederates to
his cabinet, and wanted to add thousands of people to the military pension
list. In 1881 treasury had a surplus of 145 million, and in 1887 Cleveland
wanted to lower the tariff. Democrats were disappointed with the candidates
but the Republicans were getting PUMPED UP!
