D= M (mass)= g
V (volume) mL or cm
density units= g/mL or g/cm
Density= amount of matter or particles a substance has in a given volume
High density
Low Density
**The higher the number the higher the density
ex) 25g/mL = high density
0.5g/mL= low density
**In order for something to float, it must have a lower density than the liquid it is placed in. Whatever substance has the highest density, will sink to the bottom, whatever substance has the lowest, will float to the top.
Baby oil
0.5g/mL
canola oil
water
0.8g/mL
1g/mL
Factors Affecting Density
1) Temperature: if you heat it up, particles move apart making it less dense ex) boiling water=lower density
2) Concentration: if you dissolve something in a substance, it will have more particles per given volume ex) salt water=higher density
Graphing
The steeper the line, the more dense a substance will be, the lower the line, the less dense the substance will be
more dense
less dense
