RIC ATHLETIC NEWS
Anchormen on the Road
for Alumni Visits
During two recent trips to Florida, RIC athletic staff met
with several groups of alumni, donors and friends of the program.
On a January leg, Director of Athletics
1
Don Tencher, accompanied by RIC
Foundation Board member Vin Cullen
’55, visited with Eleanor Tartaglia, wife
of the late HOFer Ed Tartaglia ’53, in the
Sarasota area (1). Eleanor was responsible
for donating the gates and entrance to the
college’s competitive outdoor athletic complex in her and Ed’s name.
Traveling down the coast, two events were held on successive nights in the Naples
area. The second event fea2
tured legendary football coach
and University of Washington
Athletic Director Mike Lude,
Cullen, and former RIC Athletic
Faculty Rep Anne Carty and
her husband (2).
On the final part of this trip, a number
of alumni and donors were invited to Marco
Island to join in festivities sponsored by the
National Association of Directors of Athletics
(NACDA), of which Tencher is a national
officer. On Sunday, Cullen joined HOFer Bob
Berlam ’58 and his lovely wife Ann at their
3
club for brunch (3).
As part of the softball team’s recent
spring training
trip in March, a gathering was held
in Orlando for the team, as well as
parents and friends, who had travelled to the area in support of the
4
Anchorwomen (4).
Men’s Basketball Reaches Little East Final
Under first-year Head Coach Michael Byrnes, the Rhode Island College
men’s basketball team continued their
winning ways, finishing the season with
20 wins (20-8) for the ninth consecutive
year and reaching the Little East Championship game for the ninth consecutive
season.
The Anchormen fell to long-time
rival Keene State, 75-57, in the title contest. Senior forward Chris Burton, who
scored his 1,000th point earlier in the season, earned his third consecutive All-Little
East honor and was named to the First Team for the second year in a row. He was
also recognized as a member of the All-Defensive Team for the third consecutive
season.
Seniors Eric Alleyne and Victor Smith earned Second Team All-Little East
honors, while freshman guard Roosevelt Shider earned a spot on the All-Rookie
team.
The women’s squad saw a glimpse of the promising future for the program
in their first season under the leadership of Glenn Senecal. The Anchorwomen
were led by sophomore guard Alex Moore, who earned Second Team All-Little East
honors, and freshman guard Jess Korzec who was an All-Rookie and All-Defensive
team honoree. With these two leading the backcourt, coupled with the loss of only
one senior, the future looks bright for the Anchorwomen.
Lanni Named R.I.I.L Legend
Athletic Hall of Famer Cathy Lanni ’88
was named a Female Basketball Legend by the
Rhode Island Interscholastic League during a
recognition ceremony at halftime of the R.I.
Girls State Basketball Championship at the
Ryan Center on Sunday, March 15.
Lanni was an All-American forward at
RIC and is the only Anchorwoman to eclipse
both the 1,000 career point and rebound
milestones
Athletic Hall of Famer G. Gail Davis ‘60 Retires
Athletic Hall of Famer G. Gail Davis ’60
recently stepped down from her position as Rhode
Island College’s Coordinator of Student-Athlete
Development and was recognized for her contributions prior to the men’s basketball game vs.
UMass Boston on Jan. 31.
A RIC Athletic and Rhode Island
Interscholastic League Hall of Famer, Davis
returned to Rhode Island College after a long
and storied career as a Girls Volleyball Coach and
teacher at Toll Gate High School in Warwick.
After her retirement, Davis joined the
Student-Athlete Support Staff in the athletic
department, first as a proctor, and then took over as the Coordinator of
Student-Athlete Development, a position she held from 2004 until recently
stepping down. Her duties included monitoring study hall, overseeing community service initiatives and RIC’s Choices Program.
Davis has been a mentor to countless RIC student-athletes during her
tenure and will be sorely missed. Fortunately, the S.A. Development program
will remain in good hands as Dolores Passarelli ’74, former Director of the
Office of Academic Support, has taken over the Coordinator duties.

2015 Spring Sports Preview
With the snow finally melting in Rhode Island, the spring sports
season is about to heat up on the campus of Rhode Island College. With
numerous teams returning from spring break trips to Florida, we look
ahead at what’s in store for the Anchormen and Anchorwomen.
The Rhode Island College men’s
track & field team, coming off a
successful indoor season which saw
two NCAA Championship qualifiers,
will look to challenge in the Little
East and New England this spring.
Sophomore Steve Vazquez, senior
Jarell Forbes and junior Edward
Cummins each qualified for the
NCAA Championships a season ago,
Edward
with Vazquez and Forbes earning AllCummins
American honors.
The women’s track & field team
also saw two NCAA qualifiers in the indoor season with junior Autumn
Wosencroft and senior Daria Braboy both
competing in the 400-meters at the NCAA
Championships. Sophomore Destinee
Barrette joins Wosencroft and Braboy as
a returning outdoor NCAA qualifier from a
season ago with the trio looking to lead the
Anchorwomen to the top of the LEC.
The Rhode Island College baseball
team returned from their Florida trip sporting a 6-4 record. Senior pitcher Dylan
Cummiskey returns to lead a new-look
rotation. Junior outfielder Matt Foley, an
All-Conference selection a season ago, looks
Dylan
Cummiskey
to improve on his sophomore season which
saw him hit .373 with 23 RBI. Junior shortstop Ryan O’Dell will be counted upon to
provide a spark in the offense, while providing strong defensive play.
The RIC softball team returned from their road trip to Florida led
by First Team All-Little East senior shortstop Katelyn Sykora, who
provides leadership and outstanding defense for the Anchorwomen.
Power-hitting senior third baseman Justina Thoma leads the team with
two HR’s and 13 RBI on
the young season with the
pitching duties being split
between junior Katelyn
McCaughey and sophomore Lauren DiScuillo.
The women’s lacrosse
team also traveled to
Florida for spring break,
Jessica
dropping a pair of deciRicci
sions at Disney’s Wide
World of Sports. The
senior attack tandem of
Danielle Landon and Jessica Ricci lead the Anchorwomen offense,
while freshman Alasondra Apici holds down the backline in goal.
The men’s tennis squad looks to shine in front of their home fans
this spring with eight home contests scheduled at the RIC Tennis Courts.
Senior Tim Holzinger hopes to build on a junior season which saw him
secure 8.0 points in singles and doubles action.
Following a fall season
which saw the team capture
their fourth straight GNAC
Championship, the Rhode
Island College men’s golf
team looks to get back in the
swing of things before their
trip to the NCAA tournament
in May. GNAC Individual
Champion Jonathan Cooper
and All-GNAC senior Patrick Ford lead an experienced squad that
recorded five first place finishes in six competitions in the fall.
The women’s basketball team wore pink warm-up shirts prior to the Anchorwomen’s
game vs. UMass Boston on Jan. 31 for Breast Cancer Awareness Day. The men’s
basketball team also wore blue warm-up shirts prior to the Anchormen’s game vs.
Southern Maine on Feb. 14 for Prostate Cancer Awareness Day.
