INSIDE THIS ISSUE 2 President’s Message 4 Professional Services 6 Travel & Activities 11 Donations Made Easy 14 November Calendar Mission: “Go-Getters adults connecting for support, community and friendship.” 1 President’s Message anything, thanking those who have served.” It was very heartwarming to watch the news last week and see school children involved in the maintenance and refurbishing of the crosses that will be erected along Memorial Drive. They expressed appreciation and the young age of some of those that died. Many of our members have sacrificed and served our country to ensure we have freedom. Please acknowledge them and thank them for their time spent defending our country and democracy. If you are unable to attend a ceremony on November 11, pause for several moments at 11:00 a.m., the time when the war ended in 1918, and reflect on the sacrifice the veterans made so that we would have freedom today, Below I quote Rebecca Zamon on Remembrance Day. “I am a Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship in my own way, free to stand for what I think right, free to oppose what I believe wrong, or free to choose those who shall govern my country. This heritage of freedom I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind.” John Diefenbaker “On this day, when we honour those who have fought for our country and our freedom, it's hard to find the words to express just what they have given each and every one of us. So instead, we've turned to those who came before us — some speaking to heal a nation, others trying to make sense of the impossible events that had just occurred. Vi Sommerfeld President Remembrance Day isn't just about war and those we've lost, but about ideals and what we stand for. It's about respecting our past and looking hopefully forward, and more than 2 WHGG Board of Directors Executive Vi Sommerfeld ................................................President Diane Allen……..............................................Vice-President and Bingo Committee Carole McIntosh……………………………...Secretary Pat Weatherley.................................................Treasurer Directors Margaret Carter – Special Events Committee Aline Greaves – Travel Committee Estelle Matthews – Board Governance Committee Carol Labrecque – Library/ Remembrance and Bingo Committee Rita Neufeld – Telephone and Bingo Committee Ernie Shemko – Bingo Committee Maryann Hustad – Special Events Committee Anne Schneider – Special Events Committee Office Staff Carole Saviak ([email protected])...............Executive Director Cassandra Towpich ([email protected]).....Program Coordinator Your West Hillhurst Go-Getters Board represents you! Giggles: 11 Vehicle Registration renewals from province: The Government of Alberta is no longer sending out renewal reminders via Canada Post. You may get a quick phone call to inform you of this but there have been instances where there has been no contact and people are getting substantial tickets for not renewing their registrations. There is now a way to get electronic reminders, please review the information below: Albertans will soon no longer receive a letter in the mail reminding them to renew their driver’s license or vehicle registration. In April 2016, the province began sending out electronic reminders via email for registration, licence and identification card renewals if you register. The province said the mailing of government reminders is a dated practice and an unnecessary expense in a digital age. The move is expected to save taxpayers $3 million a year. “During these tough economic times, it’s particularly important for government to find smart ways to save taxpayers’ money,” Danielle Larivee, acting minister of Service Alberta said in a news release. Albertans with disabilities will continue to receive reminders in the mail. Seniors over the age of 70 will continue to receive mailed reminders until April 1, 2017. The province is launching an awareness campaign, and registry agents are being asked to remind people of the changes when they come in to renew. There are three ways for Albertans to be reminded when it is time to renew: 1. Visit your local registry agent and sign up for an email reminder. 2. Sign up online to receive a reminder from one of the following: 1. E-registry (Vehicle Registration and Driver’s Licence) www.e-registry.ca 2. Alberta Motor Association (Vehicle Registration) www.ama.ab.ca 3. MyAlberta (Started April 1, 2016) https://eservices.alberta.ca 3. Check your licence plate or vehicle registration and mark the date in your calendar. “AMA has been reminding our members about upcoming vehicle renewals for years, electronically and in the pages of our member magazine. We’re committed to making our members’ lives a little easier through our e-reminder services, and also being able to handle their renewals online and in our centres.” Don Smitten, President & CEO, Alberta Motor Association Pre-printed forms aren’t required to renew “Visit e-registry.ca to renew your vehicle registration, sign up for e-reminders for your registration and drivers licence renewals or even pay your traffic fines online.” Robyn Young, President, Association of Alberta Registry Agents *Editor's note added Oct 3, 2016 for clarity: Albertans holding parking placards for persons with disabilities or disabled licence plates will continue receiving renewal reminders through the mail. 12 FCSS Funding letters: Go-Getters receives a majority of it’s funding from FCSS (Family & Community Support Services) and they require us to fill out forms to provide them with information each year. In order to make sure Go-Getters is running properly, reaching out and making a difference, they ask us to provide support letters from some of our members. These letters are a quick 2-3 paragraphs from a member stating how Go-Getters has affected their lives. We usually ask a couple members each year to complete this task for us but thought that we should open this up to give everyone a chance if they are willing to help us out. Any and all letters will be accepted and appreciated. They can also be anonymous as any personal information is not needed to submit these letters. Thank you.
