Paint the Park!
Over the course of the year, the sixth grade students have raised a total of $1,644.32. We
are incredibly proud of them. They will be going to Schuette Park on May 30th to complete
their project. During the day, they will be painting, staining, and spreading new tire chips.
If the weather doesn’t want to cooperate with us, our rain date is scheduled for June 3rd.
Oh, and in case you were wondering, they did surpass the goal of $1,000 during the Penny
War, so Mrs. Beatty will have purple and black hair as of May 20th. 
Please return permission slips and send in paint brushes if you have any we can use. 

Following this unit, we will be finishing out the school year doing a poetry unit.
Students will be reading and analyzing poetry. They will also work on writing their own
poetry. This is a great unit and we love seeing what their creative minds can come up
with. Some of the poetry may have a serious tone, while others may be funny.
Science
We have been working on our Matter and Molecules unit. Students have been studying
matter. Students have been exploring various states of matter (solids, liquids, and
gases) and how molecules behave and arrange themselves within these different states.
They have conducted a few experiments too. They have made two substances, Oobleck
and Gak. They were able to draw conclusions regarding these substances, deciding on
their state and if they went through physical or chemical changes. Be sure to check in
with your child periodically to see what’s happening in science with their experiments.

We will be ending the school year with a unit exploring energy, gravity, and forces. We

Math:
We are into our final chapter of math. We finished up Chapter 8 which has been on Statistics
and Multiplication Equations. Students explored topics on histograms, box plots, and measures
of central tendency. In Chapter 9 students will finish the year looking at volume of regular
shapes and then work with percents as they learn how to calculate discounts, tips, and interest
earned. Throughout the year, students have worked hard as mathematical thinkers as they
dove into a new way of exploring and understanding math. While we struggled along the way,
students have developed life-long skills as problem solvers and critical thinkers.
Sensational Social Studies
Where did the year go? We have learned a lot of new information about many of the great ancient
civilizations. Our study of China will conclude during the week of May 12-16. For the remaining class
periods, we will take a peek at the ancient civilizations of the Greece and Rome. I will put all of the
following links on my SchoolWorld web site for easy access to the information.
