The monsoon replenishes a dry thirsty land. Water gushes from rivers and creeks and floodplains are buried under lakes of water. The water disperses seeds and new plants are sprouting. Manmanma (cyclones) seem more frequent and are a sign of a troubled planet. Saltwater crocodiles are laying their eggs. Barramundi are multiplying upstream on the floodplains. Bush current is fruiting now. They are very sweet and a favourite of children. Big Red Apple and Pink Wild Apple are fruiting. The Red Dye Plant is fruiting. It is used to dye natural fibres such as Biyarmarrma (Pandanus) and Gwilirrimba (Sand Palm) to make Denela (string bags) and Malarramamba (Pandanus mats). From the Principal… Listening to your Child Read Last week I talked about the importance of fluency in reading. This week I would like to talk about listening to the books your child brings home. A book that is considered to be an “independent” book for your child is one where he/she will make four or fewer errors. When you sit down to read with your child ask them to make a prediction of what they think the story will be about. If they have already read part of the book to you previously ask them to recap on what has happened to set the scene. In The MultiLit Reading Tutor Program we use a particular technique when listening to children read; Pause, Prompt, Praise. When an error is made, don’t immediately correct it. Wait until the end of the sentence and ask if they felt that the sentence made sense. Usually your child will say “no”. That is then the time for you to intervene. Firstly ask them to have another go, if the error is still made then point out the word and use the prompt of identifying the initial sound, you may then need to look at the other sounds in the word. Give them the opportunity then to have a go for themselves. You may also use illustrations to help support the decoding. If a child becomes stuck on a word as they are reading, pause and allow them to have a go by themselves. When they have worked out the word, then ask them to reread the sentence. A child feels very rewarded when they are able to work it out for themselves. Too often do we jump in and make a correction when an error is made; I know I did as a parent. Holiday Program – 10th-13th April This coming one week break we will once again be offering care at our school Holiday Program. Contact the school if you would like an enrolment form sent home. Spaces are limited. This program is only for 4 days as the Friday is Good Friday. NT Government Back to School Vouchers We are coming to the end of term and there are many families who have yet to use their NT Government Voucher in full. You can use this $150 towards uniforms, camps and music instruction and it must be used by the end of the first term. If you have already used your voucher for uniforms and are waiting for them to be distributed to your child’s class, we are expecting them to arrive in week 10. Harmony Day Assembly Performances – Music and Dance Parents and friends are invited to the Stuart Park Assembly Friday, 24 March at 8.30am for what promises to be one of the most enjoyable events of the 2017 school calendar, Harmony Day. The first entertainment of the morning will be students performing the traditional Greek dance, the Zorba. Bollywood will then come to Stuart Park with students from our school’s Indian, Pakistani and Nepalese community performing 2 dances, one traditional and one modern dance. Stuart Park students from the Philippines will perform the MGA Kababayan Ko, which translates to mean My Fellow Man. The theme of this dance is Unity, Diversity and Respect. The final dance performance will be Stuart Park students from the Chung Wah Society Chinese community who will perform the spectacular Lion Dance. Each of these dance troupes will be wearing traditional costumes and performing authentic dances from their culture. The performances will be colourful and enjoyable for everyone. The Stuart Park School Choir will perform the beautiful ballad, I Still Call Australia Home, in their first performance of the year. Tea and coffee will be provided free of charge by parents from the School Council at a table near the school canteen from 8am. Early Childhood classes will begin their celebration of Harmony Day on Tuesday, 21 March, with an afternoon of music and dance from different cultures. Every Upper Primary student will commemorate Harmony Day by making an I Can Hanging Rainbow, upon which they will write one idea how students can personally promote harmony. These artworks will be displayed in classrooms and around the school. Early Arrivals at School Children have been arriving at school before 7 am. There is no supervision at school at that time. It is a particular concern when the students are Early Childhood students. The school Office opens at 7:45 and Senior Staff go out in the yard at 7:50. We ask if you could keep early arrivals as close to 7:45 as possible please. Parent Contributions We ask families to make a contribution of $150 per child each year and this goes towards supplying your child with all the stationery they need; ensuring there are sufficient teaching and learning resources; providing opportunities for excursions; improving the school facilities such as the playground. While the contribution is voluntary, we do hope that families will see the great benefit to the school when families decide to support us. Notification of Absences If you are taking your children out of school for a holiday / family business, you must notify the office. It is our responsibility to council anyone taking their child out of school for more than 2 weeks to discuss ways in which you can help develop learning when they are not in school. It is not enough to ask your child to tell the teacher; a letter, email or phone call to the office will ensure the correct message reaches the correct people. Preschool Easter Raffle Easter is fast approaching which means we need to get cracking with our Easter Raffle.
