measuring mass

MEASURING MASS
WS#2
Name
Directions: As you learn how to measure mass,
HIGHLIGHT your answers in the reading before you answer each question.
Mass is a measure of the amount of
matter in a solid, liquid or a gas. The
metric base unit of mass used with the
metric system is the gram (g). The units
for mass that are used most often are
the kilogram, gram and milligram.
1. What is mass?
2. List three units of mass that are used most often.
3.Write the best metric unit that you would use
to measure the mass of each of the following:
(kg, g, OR mg)
a)
An example for each unit of measurement is shown below.
d)
ant
medicine (pill)
e)
b)
We also need to choose the best unit to measure different
things. Milligrams is used for objects smaller than 1 gram.
Kilograms is used to measure the mass of objects greater
than 1000 grams.

Several different science tools can be used to measure the
mass of an object. A double pan balance and triple beam
balance are two tools that take a little time to measure the
mass of an object. If you want to measure the mass very
quickly, a digital scale is used instead.
4. List the three tools used to measure mass.

5. Which tool will quickly measure
the mass of an object?
A double pan balance has a pan on each side. The object is placed on one pan and
standard masses are placed on the other pan. When the pointer on the balance lines
up with the center line, both pans are balanced. To get the mass of the object you
add up all the standard masses.
