A Tribute to Scopus,
the Foundation and
Solomon Lew.
When the Hon Tony Abbott
MP, Prime Minister, agreed to
be the Guest of Honour for
the Foundation Celebration
Dinner – and so soon after his
government’s election - it was
an enormous tribute to Mount
Scopus College.
Celebrating support, commitment and achievement,
the evening was enjoyed by 400 guests, comprising
Foundation members, Ambassador-Designate Shmuel
Ben-Shmuel, parliamentarians, staff and students.
And was yet another event generously hosted by
Rosie and Solomon Lew and their family.
Scopus Foundation
Celebration Dinner
Celebrating Support,
Commitment and
Achievement
Elements of this warmth-filled evening included a
student choir, inspirational speeches, a motivational
DVD and recognition of benefactors – and the
announcement that after 26 years at the helm of the
Foundation and the raising of $46 million, Solomon
Lew was stepping down as Chairman.
As Foundation President, Henry Lanzer, remarked
“It is truly the end of an era - an era we will all
remember fondly and appreciatively, and one that
epitomises support, commitment and achievement.”
Henry was delighted to acknowledge a new gift of
$1 million dollars by the Lew family - an affirmation of
their ongoing support and involvement. In recognition
of their immeasurable contribution to the lives of
generations of students, the secondary school of
Mount Scopus College will now be known as the
Lew Family Secondary School.
We also celebrated a new $1 million gift by Eva and
Marc Besen, which further demonstrates their
continuing support and understanding of the
importance of the College for our community.
Mike Smith, on behalf of ANZ, and the Fink Karp Ivany
Family were proudly recognised at Life Trustee level,
and Sue and Michael Karp as recipients of the Leon
Fink Memorial Award for Commitment to Jewish
Education.
We thank all our donors and especially
welcome new members along with
those who reconfirmed their support in
the short lead up time to the Dinner.
More than $3.5 million was raised in 3 weeks! Our dedicated Executive’s outreach is ongoing please consider adding your family’s support.

He continued “one of my greatest pleasures has been
the opportunity to work in partnership with Henry
Lanzer, the Foundation’s tireless President, for the
past 17 years. With the support of Janette and his
family, Henry has committed extraordinary amounts of
time, expertise and energy to progress the Foundation
and the College. His dedication is simply unparalleled
and thousands of students have reaped the rewards of
his efforts. Henry, the College, and the community, is
truly blessed to have your deep commitment.”
“The Time has Come…”
So began retiring Chairman,
Solomon Lew, as he took
the microphone at the recent
Foundation Celebration Dinner.
He added “I wouldn’t have
swapped the experience
with anything”.
Expressing his appreciation for the extraordinary
contributions of the current Executive, Sol thanked
Vice-Presidents Sam Alter and Stewart Baron together
with Paul Bassat, Joey Borensztajn, Russell Casper,
David Gold, Jack Hansky, Ricky Smorgon, Roy Tashi
and Executive Director, Marilyn Simon – and also
the retired members.
He continued by recalling that when he agreed to
become the Chairman it was with a deep desire
to make a difference to his school, and that of his
children, and understanding the importance of a
strong and successful Scopus. “And I knew the College
had to be well supported – perhaps at a level not seen
before – to achieve all its goals.
“26 years and $46 million dollars later, and with my
grandchildren now at the College, I know and see the
great impact our Foundation supporters have made
and I feel very proud to have been involved.”
Remarking that he felt privileged to have worked
alongside the very best, he thanked former Presidents
David Smorgon and Dug Pomeroy and noted the
contributions of the first Vice-Presidents, the late
Leon Liberman, and Roy Tashi. He also fondly
remembered the late Roslyn Smorgon.
Page 4
He stressed that one of the greatest
rewards had been the overwhelming
support of the generous donors of more
than $46 million who have made it
possible for Mount Scopus to initiate and
implement best educational practise.
And at the same time made it possible for the College
to assist with bursaries and fee relief programs which
had a direct bearing on how many children could
enjoy the Scopus experience.
He continued “You, our Foundation supporters, are an
outstanding group of committed individuals and we
applaud you for your achievements. You have made a
difference not just to Scopus but to the strength and
vitality of our community.”
Sol concluded with one final thank you for his family.
“I could not have carried out this role for so many years
without your unwavering support, encouragement
and your personal involvement. And I know I can
say on your behalf that our family’s
commitment to Scopus will not
cease with my retirement.”

It gave me great pleasure to

“When Mount Scopus College opened its doors in
1949, our founders dreamt of a community in which
all its children could receive a secular and Jewish
education of excellence.
“And it is in this spirit that I am delighted to advise
that the Lew family has pledged a magnificent new
gift of $1 million dollars to the College – an affirmation
of their ongoing support and involvement. “Today, Mount Scopus College is recognised as
one of the leading Jewish Day Schools in the world,
something we all tend to take for granted.
“We all understand that the successful delivery of
an education of excellence relies on far more than
funding alone. Our Principal, Rabbi James Kennard,
heads an exemplary team whose commitment is
unwavering. They, in turn, are supported by dedicated
lay leaders, led by our College President, Lisa Kennett.
“In 1987, when the College leadership wisely
established the Foundation, the goals were simple but
vital - to provide the funds to advance the school and
to secure its future.

“Mount Scopus College is now educating and being
supported by successive generations of families. Whilst we genuinely thank and value our traditional
donors, it is with the greatest of pleasure that
I acknowledge our newest members.
“Since then your gifts have funded a multitude of
developments and projects, supported innumerable
programs, significantly increased Ulpan participation,
and brought technology into the hands of our
students. Take a walk down the corridors of Scopus
and you will see a College that is buzzing with vitality,
filled with students broadening their horizons in both
the Jewish and the secular worlds.
“And just as the next generation comes on board as
parents and supporters, so too must our Foundation
executive begin a generational change. We must now
look to them to become increasingly involved and to
lead our College Foundation into the years ahead.
“And many children are experiencing this unique
Scopus education because of your support for
bursaries. The College allocates an amazing
$2.5 million dollars every year to subsidies, whilst
maintaining school fees at a competitive level.
We must continue to fund the physical needs of
the College and to invest in staff development and
educational programs. But more importantly, we must
endeavour to contain the cost of a Jewish education
so that significantly more children can be offered the
opportunity to participate, which is a challenge for the
whole community.
“I wish to acknowledge the dedicated efforts of every
member of the Foundation executive, both past and
current. I feel privileged to work with these committed
and talented individuals, a team that has been singled
out in the Australian newspaper as one of the most
capable and talented group of individuals around
Australia to provide direction and leadership to a school.
“Over 26 years and under Solomon Lew’s chairmanship,
the Foundation has raised $46 million dollars!
“Sol, your leadership has been inspirational and
every member of the Foundation Executive has felt
honoured to work beside you. “I am confident that with the continuing support and
generosity of our Foundation members we will meet
our challenges. Your involvement and generosity
demonstrate an understanding that one of our highest
priorities is the affordability of a Jewish education. “Our College has now produced thousands of
graduates who are positively contributing to all facets
of life. The students of Mount Scopus College look
forward to your continuing support – for the leaders
of tomorrow are in the classrooms of today.”

Commitment to Jewish Education
At the Foundation Celebration Dinner, special mention
was made of the Foundation’s inspirational and visionary
supporters, Eva and Marc Besen. Their passion and
commitment to the College is exemplary, further
evidenced by their new and substantial commitment of
$1 million dollars. In honour of their long involvement and
generosity and their very special encouragement of the
performing arts - and to celebrate Marc’s 90th birthday we are delighted to name the Scopus school orchestra
the ‘Marc and Eva Besen Orchestra’.
We thank the recipients of the Leon Fink Memorial Award
for Commitment to Jewish Education, created in 1997 to
recognise our supporters as they reach Founder level.

Scopus Values
When I get asked, and it’s
often, how am I still so
passionate about Scopus after
so long, it does make me pause
and think – but only for one
brief moment.
Why wouldn’t I be? The length
of time has only served to
reinforce the motives of old
and provide new ones.
With grandchildren now on their Scopus journey, I
am able to see firsthand how a Scopus education
has strengthened and evolved. The International
Baccalaureate Programmes, experiential Jewish life,
amazing teaching and learning with technology – all in
inspiring environments – contribute to every aspect of
their development.
And in much the same way, I have been able to more
deeply appreciate the commitment of the members
of the Foundation Executive and their support and
friendship.
There is no doubt Scopus Values
provide the motivation for many people
who contribute so much.
I thank everybody who inspires and fuels my passion
– the school leadership, my colleagues, all Scopus
volunteers, especially our dedicated Foundation
Executive, and you, our generous Foundation supporters.
There has been much said and written about the
enormous legacy of retiring Chairman, Solomon Lew.
Sol, may I add to these tributes my appreciation for your
personal encouragement and support - you’ve added an
undeniable richness to my work. Earlier this year we simplified our mission statement into
four easily appreciated and understood Scopus Values:
Excellence in Learning; Holistic Development; Jewish
Identity and Community and Service. These Values
underpin all our objectives and programs. And it’s their
successful deliverance that is producing the graduates
of whom we are so proud, and consequently a stronger
Jewish community.
When addressing our Year 12 students recently at their
Graduation Ball, Rabbi Kennard reminded them “We need
to value ourselves because of who we are, and because
of what we can do. You will not be defined by what you
have, but by what you give.”
Time has also allowed me to deepen relationships with
so many of our supporters, and to shape new ones –
something which gives me pleasure every day. Marilyn Simon
Executive Director
I can think of no better ‘value’ by which to live our lives
and to sustain my passion for Scopus.

Scopus Values your Legacy
A Bequest in your Will is one of the simplest ways to
show your support and perhaps at a level not possible
during your lifetime.
Will your Bequest make a difference?
We express our heartfelt appreciation to the people
from whose Estate the College has benefited and
to those who have recently included Mount Scopus
College as a beneficiary in their Will.
Thoughtful and significant Bequests recently have
created the Helene and Paul Kohn Bursaries and the
Herta and Roman Scherer Bursaries and will be their
everlasting legacies.
If you are considering making Mount Scopus College
a beneficiary of your Estate in any way, please call
Marilyn Simon, Foundation Executive Director, who
can provide the correct wording for insertion in your
Will, or perhaps suggest a solicitor. It is our pleasure,
when advised of a proposed Bequest, to acknowledge
and honour the donor during their lifetime. For any
information please call Marilyn Simon on
(03) 9834 0033.
How do you make a Bequest to Scopus?
May their memory be a blessing
After considering the needs of your family, we
encourage you to provide for our future by making
Scopus a beneficiary of your Will. Adding a codicil to
an existing Will may be the easiest option. We suggest
you consult your solicitor or ask us for assistance.
The Foundation notes with sadness the passing over the
last year of:
Jack Lanzer
Raymond Vidor.
Most definitely. Every Bequest, large or small, will make
a unique contribution to our students, the school, and
ultimately, to our community.
What form may your Bequest take?
-- A specific sum of money
We gratefully acknowledge the Bequests of:
-- A percentage of your Estate or the residue of
your Estate

How will your Bequest be used?
Unless you direct otherwise, your Bequest will be
managed by the Mount Scopus College Foundation
which provides for
-- subsidised tuition fees for students who would
otherwise be excluded
-- scholarships
-- additional programs
-- development of facilities
or you may identify a specific purpose.
Should you advise your intentions?
By informing us, we are able to show our appreciation
during your lifetime, and perhaps work with you to
decide the direction for your Bequest.
All Bequests are acknowledged on our Bequest
