Leggos Classification Activity

Leggo Classification Activity
Title
1.Every group receives a baggie of “leggos”. Let’s image
these leggo pieces represent new species in an
unexplored world. We need to “group or classify” them
to better understand them.
3 characteristics
2. Determine three characteristics that all of your leggos
share. Place the characteristics into the first box of the
chart. Make a Title for this box.

3. Divide this group into 2 sub-groups by common
characteristics. Make a title for your sub groups.
4. Continue until you have only ONE leggo per sub
group.
5. When you are finished raise your hand and I will
add an “unknown” leggo piece to your mix.
6. Classify this new leggo into your model. Start at
the top of your chart and continue through the
chart.
7. If time allows, ask me for a new “unknown” leggo.
Find it’s group.

Let’s take a look this…
1. What were some of the common characteristics that
you used to classify your leggos?
2. Did you have any trouble classifying them? Explain.
3. Was it difficult to use your chart for the “unknown”
leggos? Were there problems you ran into?
4. Is there more than one way you could have classified
the leggos?
Now let’s learn a little about the
Classification of Organisms … a few
slides of guided notes.
Slides 1-4
Let’s parallel our Leggo Classification
with Taxonomic Hierarchy
Using a colored marker label
each level of your chart with
the appropriate taxonomic
level (Broadest- specific)

•
Kingdom - Broadest
Phylum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species – Most Specific
Homework
• In your notebook make a tree map like the
one you made in you leggos activity. Make
enough levels to label each level with the
proper taxonomic name (Kingdom, Phylum,
Class, Order, Genus, Species)
