TMS LIBRARY BOOKS (REGULAR TMS LIBRARY BOOKS)
THE BASIC RULES
 You may have up to 2 books at a time.
- NOTE: English novels do not count against your total number of books!
 You may keep your book(s) for up to 2 weeks.
 When your books are overdue you’ll get a notification in Destiny Quest!
 If you aren’t finished with your book, just come in and show Ms. Inverarity
your book and ask if you can renew it, this will give you an extra 2 weeks.
- It is important that you show Ms. I the book, it is the only way of
confirming that the book is indeed in use and not misplaced or stolen.
RETURNING LIBRARY BOOKS
 You can return library books any day during passing period. Just walk into the
library and put it in the drop box!
 If your classes are all located far away from the library and you don’t think
you will have time to make it up to the library, just give your book to your
English teacher and they will make sure it gets returned to the library.
LOST AND OVERLY DAMAGED BOOKS
 If you are reading a book and you notice that there is something written it in,
a page is torn, or the spine is coming loose, please tell Ms. Inverarity. You will
not get in trouble! It is important to keep the books as well maintained as
possible so they don’t completely fall apart.
 If you lose your book or it is destroyed to the point that nobody could ever
read it (your dog ate the first 3 chapters), you will have two options:
- You could pay whatever the original cost of the book was (this is always
noted in Ms. Inverarity’s records on Destiny)
- Or you could purchase a replacement copy of the book
3
TRAVEL SEMINAR DAYS
 You may travel to your TMS Library on travel seminar days. This is a privilege
and Ms. Inverarity or any other TMS staff member may take this privilege
away from you if you abuse it.
 You MUST get a zap stamp from Ms. Inverarity prior to your travel seminar.
You can do this anytime you pass by the library during passing periods or
before school. It is easiest if you have your planner out and turned to the
appropriate day! You can even get a zap stamp a week in advance!
4
TYPES OF BOOKS
Note: Any time that I refer to a “call #” please keep in mind a call # may not
actually have any numbers at all. The call # is the label on the book’s spine that
tells you where the book belongs on the shelf. An example of a call # without any
numbers would be: “FIC AVI” or “SC HAD.”
FICTION (FIC)
What:
The fiction section is where you will find all of your novels. Fiction means that
it isn’t true. Books like A Child Called ‘It’ or The Upstairs Room will not be found in
the fiction section because they are true.
Where:
The fiction section begins immediately after the first three “Featured
Selections” bookcases in your TMS Library. Each fiction bookcase is marked with a
sign. Fiction is organized alphabetically by the author’s last name and the signs will
help guide you to the right shelf. If you are looking for a specific genre of fiction
you can either search on Destiny or you can visit the Featured Selections shelves
and see if there is something there that interests you.
5
STORY COLLECTION (SC)
What:
Story collections are multiple stories, often by multiple authors, contained
within one book. They all have the call # prefix “SC.”
Where:
The story collection books are found at the end of the fiction section. They
are marked with a sign. These books are a bit funny because sometimes they are
organized by one author’s last name and other times they are organized by the
book’s title. Since this section is small it is easy to browse for a book that interests
you and if you need help finding a specific book, ask Ms. Inverarity for help.
SERIES WITH DIFFERENT CALL #S
What:
These books are pulled from where they would normally belong in the TMS
library so that they may be found more easily. Most of them have a different call
number because they are written by different authors. However, the Chicken Soup
for the… Soul books have different call #s because they are about different
subjects and so they fall into different Dewey Decimal categories.
Where:
These books are found at the end of the fiction section on the same
bookcase as the story collections.
The following series are included here:
 Mary-Kate and Ashley
 Chicken Soup for the… Soul
 39 Clues
 Bluford High
 Dear America book
6
BATTLE OF THE BOOKS
What:
These books were chosen for the Battle of the Books competition in previous
years. All of the books for previous years are available for any student to checkout,
even if you are not participating in Battle of the Books this year.
Where:
The Battle of the Books books are all found together near Ms. Inverarity’s
desk. The shelf looks like it is behind the desk and may appear off limits, but they
aren’t so please feel free to browse these shelves!
FEATURED SELECTIONS
What:
These are books that are pulled from their regular place in the library. There
are here in case you don’t know specifically what you want to read but you do
know a type of book you like to read. Each shelf has a sign and a QR code. If you
aren’t sure what the sign means or you want to know more about the books found
on a particular Featured Selections shelf, then you
Where:
When you walk in through the main library doors, the Featured Selections
are the first three bookcases to your left. The immediately precede the fiction
section. The location of a specific shelf may change and the variety that I have
presented may change as well.
It is important to pay attention to Edmodo and participate in the polls that I
put on there because this is how I will decide which shelves to keep and which
shelves are less popular.
7
BIOGRAPHIES (92)
What:
Biographies are books about a person’s life. Collective biographies that are
about more than one person are found within the nonfiction section and all of
their call #s begin with “920.” Examples of collective biographies would be a book
about famous female scientists or a book about a famous band. However,
biographies about a singular person are shelved together and they all have a call #
beginning with “92.”
Where:
Biographies are found on the three bookcases after the nonfiction section.
The first bookcase has all of the biographies that are part of a larger series and the
remaining biographies are organized alphabetically by the subject’s last name.
So, instead of thinking of who wrote the book, think of who the book is
about. For example, a book about Anne Frank will have the call # “92 FRA.”
REFERENCE (REF)
What:
These books are not intended to be read from cover to cover. Reference
books are what you would use if you just needed to find a specific piece of
information or if you are learning about a new subject and you want a starting
place. Dictionaries and encyclopedias are reference books.
Where:
The books found on the short shelf in between the couches and the green
chairs are all reference books. These books are meant to stay in the library and
cannot be checked out.
8
NONFICTION (DEWEY DECIMAL BOOKS)
What:
All of the books in your TMS Library that are sorted by Dewey Decimal are
referred to as nonfiction. Nonfiction books are informative and based on fact. If
there is a topic that interests you such as the Titanic, the Donner Party, WWII, or a
particular person in history, this is where you will find these books. You will also
find books about your favorite athletes and sports teams in this section.
Fiction in the nonfiction section:
There are instances where books that are truly considered fiction are shelved
amongst the nonfiction. Examples of these:
 468s:
- Some of the books with this call # are fictional novels that are written in
Spanish. This section is marked with a sign.
 741.5:
Graphic Novels
 808s:
Poetry
Where:
The books with Dewey Decimal call #s begin immediately after the Story
Collection and Series w/different call #s book case. The beginning of the nonfiction
section is marked with the sign “001-363.” At the end of the 600s the nonfiction
section jumps across the room. The 700s begin on the bookcase near the
computer nest and they are also marked with a sign.
At the end of the nonfiction section are two bookcases of 900s that are
sorted alphabetically by subject. These are all series that have different call #s
because they are about actually about different subjects, but since they are large
series it is more convenient to organize them together. You will find book series
about countries, states, and Native American nations here.

PUTTING A BOOK ON HOLD
There are two different scenarios in which you will put a regular book on hold:
THE BOOK IS “OUT” (NOT AVAILABLE)
 You may put an unavailable book on hold at any time. This is a great way to
make sure you are able to check out the book as soon as it becomes
available.
- Keep in mind that when you put the book on hold, there may be any
number of students “in line” before you that have already put the book
on hold. This is why it is so important to return your books on time!
 If you put a hold on an unavailable book and you change your mind before
the book becomes available for you to check out, you may delete that hold
yourself within Destiny. [screenshot coming soon]
 In this scenario with a hold on an unavailable book, once Destiny tells you the
book is ready to pick up you may come pick it up without waiting for an
Edmodo message.
 Holds on unavailable books expire after 60 days. This shouldn’t be an issue
unless a student has not returned a book for 2 months or the book has been
lost or was unaccounted for in last year’s inventory. If you have been waiting
for a long time for a particular book, ask Ms. Inverarity if she could look up
the book’s history for you.
 Once your book becomes available you will have 5 days to stop by the library
and pick it up. If you can’t make it to the library have your seminar teacher
email Ms. Inverarity and she will deliver the book to you.
17
THE BOOK IS “IN” (AVAILABLE)
 If you want to be able to quickly come by and pick up the book during your
passing period, you can put the book on hold and then I will pull the book
and have it ready and waiting for you to come pick up!
 Since the book is technically available, Destiny will automatically tell you that
your book is “Ready.” However, this does not mean I have pulled it from the
shelf for you and it does not mean that the book is checked out to you!
 If you put an available book on hold, you must wait until you receive a
message from me in Edmodo telling you that the book is actually ready!
 Also, you will need to send me a message in Edmodo if you change your
mind about a ready hold. You can only delete “pending” holds, I have to
personally go into my requests and delete any “ready” holds.
PUTTING A HOLD ON AN EBOOK
 You may have up to two eBooks on hold at a time
 You will be alerted via a notification in Destiny Quest or when viewing the
Follett Shelf that your book has become available
 You will have five days after your book becomes available to check it out to
your account
 Unlike regular books, if you book becomes available but you no longer want
it, you can simply check it out and then return it early!

EBOOKS
Your TMS Library currently has a total of 90 eBook Titles:
 5 Protected English novels (aren’t available until that unit is over for the year)
 20 Unlimited simultaneous access eBooks
- These books are never unavailable. Every student and staff member
could check out this same eBook and read it simultaneously and it
would still be available.
- These eBooks are all marked with a green infinity symbol
 7 Single check out eBooks (only one copy each)
 53 Classic eBooks (the number of copies for each of these varies)
FINDING EBOOKS
 You can search for eBooks by selecting “check out more books” while in the
Follett Digital Reader.
- Currently, since our eBook collection is so small, browsing through our
different eBooks online at our Follett Shelf website is the easiest way to
find an eBook.
 You may also set a material type limiter when searching in Destiny Online or
Destiny Quest.
READING, CHECKING OUT, & DOWNLOADING EBOOKS
READING EBOOKS
 You will notice as you read different eBooks that each one has different
features available. Play around with these features. Some eBooks will allow
you to create notes, copy and paste, etc.!
 The audio feature, when available, is only accessible via computer
 Also notice that you can view your eBook one or two pages at a time.
23
CHECKING OUT & DOWNLOADING EBOOKS
 Regular eBooks have a 7 day checkout period
- Please only check out one single checkout eBook at a time. When you
have this type of eBook checked out, nobody else can read it until you
return it!
 Unlimited eBooks have a 30 day checkout period
- You can always check it back out since unlimited eBooks are always
available. There is only a checkout period for report purposes.
 Once you check out an eBook it is important that you download it to your
device if you are on your iPad!
- Once it’s downloaded to your device you don’t need the internet to
read that eBook, you simply open your Follett Digital Reader app and
select the eBook from your shelf.
- Since the internet isn’t being used when you are reading a downloaded
copy, you are freeing up TMS internet usage and Follett’s servers!
 It is equally important that you move this eBook back online when you are
finished with it so that you can return it. You will not be able to return an
eBook until it is moved back online!

USING PERSONAL DEVICES AT HOME TO READ TMS LIBRARY EBOOKS
If you would like a manual on how to use a specific device at home to access
your eBooks, please ask Ms. Inverarity and she will send you a pdf via Edmodo or
she will print you out a hard copy if you do not take your iPad home.
There is an app out for smart phones that is similar to the Follett Digital
Reader, but it is optimized for the phone’s screen size.
Please do not hesitate it ask Ms. Inverarity for help in using your personal
device to access Destiny or the TMS Follett Shelf!

OTHER DESTINY FEATURES
CONNECTING WITH FRIENDS
This feature is only found when accessing Destiny Quest through a web
browser. Unfortunately, at this time it is not yet available in the Destiny Quest app.
To connect with a friend you just need to start typing their name in the
search field and then once you seen their name listed, select the “send” button.
Once they accept it you will be notified on your MyQuest updates. See the
screenshots below for further guidance.
You can only connect with people that are in TMS. This includes teachers. If
you connect to your teachers on Destiny Quest, they can recommend their favorite
books to you! When you are connected with friends you will also be able to see
the new reviews they post on your MyQuest updates.
It is important to note that you CANNOT connect with anyone through
Destiny that is not within TMS. This feature is only available to TMS students and
staff. This feature is secure and safe and does not violate any school or district
policies regarding social media.

WRITING REVIEWS
STAR RATINGS:
1- “Poor”
2- “Fair”
3- “OK”
4- “Good”
5- “Awesome”
REVIEW:
Your review needs to include information that supports your star rating. It’s the “why” part. There are two main rules about writing
reviews:
1) Do NOT include spoilers! You can describe some of the plot, but don’t say anything that will ruin the book for someone who hasn’t
read it yet!
For instance this would be okay:
“This book is about a 12 year old boy that goes on an adventure with his dog. The boy encountered a lot of danger and the story was
really fast-paced. At one point you don’t even know if the boy and his dog are going to survive!”
However, this would not be okay:
“This book is about a boy that goes on an adventure with his dog. The boy loses his dog while they are crossing a river and the boy
encounters a lot of danger trying to find his dog, but don’t worry he survives! And at the end of the book he finds his dog safe and
sound, so there’s a happy ending!”
2) Use appropriate language and make sure you are actually writing a review! All reviews have to be approved by me before they are
posted. After you submit your review you will notice it will say “pending approval.” Once I have time to read your review I will either
post it, edit it slightly before posting it, or I will delete it if it is inappropriate or not a book review. Any attempted abuse of the book
review feature will result in consequences.
