Last May, archivist Amy Dunning, received a call from a Texas woman
who found the Museum’s archives through a Google search. The
woman was looking for her relatives, the Trotts, who lived in Santa
Cruz during the 1800s and 1900s, and because of recent work done
at the Museum to make this information accessible online, she
was able to locate photographs, family documents and a bible. The
Museum currently has 50 collections listed on the website which
can be accessed through online search engines like Google or by
going directly to santacruzmah.org and clicking on Archive/Library
under History Resources. The next phase of the project is to put
more of our collections online and to create detailed finding aids
for each collection.

Surf City Santa Cruz: A Wave of Inspiration, a museum-wide art and history
exhibition, including design and technology, was a labor of love for MAH Curator
of Exhibitions and Collections, Susan Hillhouse. Susan worked with a dedicated
contingent of Santa Cruz’s local surfing community to create an exhibition
full of photography, graphics, videos, wetsuits, surf boards, contemporary art
inspired by the surfing culture, and of course stories… about the history of
surfing in Santa Cruz and the variety of art and designs that emanate from this
unique surfing culture, the original Surf City. The exhibition ran from March 27
through July 25, 2010 and was enjoyed by over 8,000 visitors.
“This exhibition was a love letter to Santa Cruz. We brought in new visitors,
shared our passion for surfing with people from near and far, and we honored
our community of artists by showcasing the manifestations of their souls.”

a bright future
Letter from the
Board President
Everyone at the Museum—trustees, staff and volunteers—appreciate the devoted and
loyal support of our members! These are challenging times and your support makes
a difference, allowing us to serve our community and deliver fun and engaging art
and history programs and activities for all ages. This last year we tackled some big
projects including community assessment work, forward progress toward American
Association of Museums accreditation, work on a new Strategic Plan and creation of
new policies and procedures, including a new ethics document.
We had just completed our fiscal year when Paul Figueroa, MAH’s Executive Director
for the past seven years, resigned to pursue other professional opportunities. We
owe a debt of gratitude to him for his efforts to lead the Museum into a new phase
of growth and we wish him well in his new endeavors. Paula Kenyon, MAH’s Director
of Development over the last year and a half, stepped in to fill the position. A
search for a permanent director will be conducted soon.
This last year the Museum underwent several
important evaluations—all aimed at better
serving our community. Museum trustees
and staff formulated a new Strategic Plan.
The Museum also completed a communitywide assessment, funded by a grant from the
Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County,
which confirmed what people love most
about the Museum, as well as suggesting
other offerings members and visitors would
welcome. These important documents and
plans will be used to enhance member and
visitor experiences, enrich existing programs
and add new ways to enjoy and connect
with the Museum. If you would like a copy

I’d like to gratefully thank our departing trustees—John Burroughs, Alan Levin, Sophie
Moore and Karol Niccoli—for their mindful and dedicated service to the Museum and

Donna Keith, Vance Landis, Adrienne Momi, Ronna Schulkin, Maryjane Slade, Wesley
Van Camp and Nancy Woolf. I join with them and the rest of our seasoned trustees

educational programming highlights
“The school tours are very well
organized. The students are
highly engaged.”
Third Grade Teacher, Soquel Elementary
• In Summer 2009, our four Summer Art Camps filled to maximum
enrollment, for a total of 64 students. Camps paired professional
artists with students to learn printmaking, landscape painting,
and photography.
• In July, four-time world champion boxer Carina Moreno and her
trainer Rick Noble, captivated their audience with stories, while the
spirit and commitment of this local female boxer was chronicled in
an exhibition by local photographer W. Scott Barry at Lulu’s.
• Families enjoyed a lively and colorful festival in honor of Dia de
los Muertos in October. ZunZun had the crowd of 500 on their
feet dancing to festive cultural songs and Xochipilli Compania de
Danza Mexicana perfomed a beautiful traditional dance in front of
the Museum’s Community Altar.
• This year kicked off the creation of a series of Adult Art Workshops
with great success; classes on encaustics and bookmaking were
taught by the Rydell Fellows.

• The Museum celebrated Memorial Day utilizing the new
Remembering Our Own publication honoring the 463 former
residents of Santa Cruz County who died in the armed forces
during a period of war. The county-wide commemoration featured
a traditional annual observance at Evergreen Cemetery, attended
by 250 people, with speakers Mayor Mike Rotkin, Supervisor Tony
Campos, and Santa Cruz County veterans.
• The 4th Annual Lillian McPherson Rouse Memorial History Lecture
featured author Thomas Hickenbottom, plus Kim Stoner, Harry
Mayo, and Matt Micuda, giving a rousing talk on the history of
surfing in Santa Cruz. Among those in attendance were some of
the founders of the Santa Cruz Surf Club.

Almost twenty years ago, Joan and Bob Nelson became docents with
the Santa Cruz Historical Trust, which later became part of the Museum
of Art & History. Today, Joan and Bob are still very active at MAH,
Joan particularly with Evergreen Cemetery and Bob with Researchers
Anonymous. Bob recently authored a well-received book honoring
Santa Cruzans who perished during wartimes titled Remembering Our
Own. Joan is an active docent at Evergreen, has worked extensively
with the Evergreen archives (over 1,000 individuals and their families
are buried at Evergreen!), and was a valued contributor to the
Museum’s recent Evergreen Cemetery Preservation Plan. Joan and Bob
recently named the Museum’s Evergreen educational program and
history research and publications activities at MAH in a Charitable
Remainder Trust (CRT). “We chose a Charitable Remainder Trust
arrangement that allows us the opportunity to continue to derive
income revenues during our life time with those revenues being

converted to ongoing gifts to non-profit organizations upon our death,”
explained Joan Nelson. “As historical researchers we feel it is important
that financial assistance be available to local historians for new historical
publications and to allow them to complete research projects. We also
believe that Evergreen Cemetery is an important community outdoor
museum that will require additional financial assistance to develop new
enhancements and programs,” added Bob Nelson. The pair chose to go
through Lutheran Community Foundation because of its record for quality
management, but there are many local foundations available as well. The
process is straightforward; foundations typically do all the work required to
put the programs in place, and after an attorney reviews it to insure that
donors’ desires are protected, the CRT is completed. MAH is very grateful
to the Nelson’s for their current and future efforts to support these two

This past year the Museum hosted 2,600 school children,
representing a 13% increase in the last several years.
“The arts are the first to be cut during a financial
crisis, so your program fills a huge gap in a
well-rounded education. My students benefit so
much from your program—thank you!”
Second Grade Teacher, Bay View Elementary
The Museum saw a spike in attendance this past year
due to the Surf City Santa Cruz exhibition. Students got
to design and paint their own paper surfboard in the
Hawley Family classroom after being inspired by local
board shapers, photographers, and painters.
Third and Fourth graders continue to learn about local
and California history through interactive history tours
of the Museumís permanent history gallery, Where the
Redwoods Meet the Sea. The students also examine artifacts and read primary sources as detectives for a more
in-depth observation of Santa Cruz County history.
