The career fair is over, what should I do now?
BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE CAREER FAIR
Double check…did you talk to representatives from each agency you had targeted?
Did you get business cards from each representative (or information on how to apply to that
agency)?
Did you take notes needed for follow-up (e.g., application time lines, points of connection
between your qualifications and the agency’s selection needs) with the organizations that interest
you?
WITHIN 48 HOURS
Review all the information you collected and prioritize the agencies according to your level of interest.
Starting with the “most interesting” list, email “thank you for coming to the career fair and taking time to
talk to me” letters (keep each letter brief, but do touch upon how your background matches what the
organization is looking for in interns or new hires). Include a copy of your resume.
WITHIN A WEEK AFTER THE EVENT
Complete any online applications or tests required by the agencies that you are targeting (don’t
delay…promptly completing such steps reinforces your level of interest!). Send each recruiter a brief
note to let them know when you have finished that agency’s application process. On-line application
systems:
Federal government: www.usajobs.gov or the agency’s website
State of Ohio: careers.ohio.gov
City of Columbus: hr.ci.columbus.oh.us/
Franklin County: franklincountyohio.gov/content/employment.cfm
DON’T STOP THERE, CONTINUE TO…
…stay in touch. Keep in mind that the screening process for government employment tends to move a
bit slower than timelines used in the private sector. Use the information you gathered from each agency
about their particular time frame to plan your follow-up.
…research your target agencies. Consider asking for names of alumni who currently work at that
agency. This will allow you to set-up informational interviews to learn about other experiences
working/interning for that agency.
