When you introduce a quote in your writing, the words you use can indicate to the reader how close

you are distancing yourself from Smith’s views
Smith believes…
You may still disagree with Smith but you are giving Smith some credit
Smith writes…
Smith States…
you are not supporting or contradicting Smith, you are being objective
Smith explains…
you are starting to show how Smith supports your argument
Smith provides evidence for this…
Smith shows…
you are clearly using Smith to support your stance
Smith informs us…
you are completely in agreement with Smith
I like Smith!
your own arguments are to that of the person you are quoting. Here are some examples:
