WORDTHEQUE
W h a t i s t h e L o g o s Wo r dt h e q u e ?
Wordtheque is the name we have given to a multilingual library indexed word by word, a
multifunctional interface containing over 723.500.000 words which continues to grow at a rate of more
than 500,000 words per day. It embraces literary works, novels, technical and scientific texts, translations,
monographs and much more, in 120 languages.
When you enter the Wordtheque, the first thing you see is the phrase: "You can tell a word by the
company it keeps" scroll by at the top of the page. This to remind us that a single word, without its
context, has no meaning at all, because the value and expressive power of a word changes according to
the cultural and historical background in which it appears. Take the word "dog" for example: in America
and many European countries it could be associated to 'man's best friend', in China 'a delicious cuisine
speciality for festive occasions'! A word acquires meaning, in relation to experience, which is portrayed
by the words that precede and follow it in a phrase.
Wordtheque was born as a tool for the Logos translators, to aid them in understanding the use of
searched words within past contexts, to better place them within specific contexts. Knowledge you can
manage with the Logosys extraordinary tools that allow you to lookup any book by.
T h e Wo r dt h e q u e F u n c t i o n s
Search by Author or Title as you would in an ordinary library or, use the
revolutionary "by word" contextual search engine.
7
HOW IS IT USED?
Clicking on Wordtheque, your screen will immediately show a page made up of two functional
parts: a dialogue window at the top and an list of languages below.
Using the bottom half of the page you can proceed conventionally: clicking on any one of the
language, you will access a page containing the works currently in the database for that
particular language.
The works are catalogued by author and by title. You can also select a letter of the alphabet
with which to direct your search, in which case Wordtheque will guide you to the title or name of
the work or author in alphabetical order.
Scroll to the top part of the page use the revolutionary aspect of Wordtheque's search facility.
The window contains four fields: you use the first field (top left) to select a language, and the
field alongside (top right) to enter the word (max 3 word) you want to find. These two fields are
functions, and therefore cannot be ignored.
"Author" and "Title", in the two remaining fields are optional items of information which give you
the facility of refining your search. You will find these fields useful in limiting the scope of your
search, but Wordtheque will run the search just the same, even if they are left empty.
Clicking on "Search", Wordtheque begins scanning the database and a new page will appear.
Hits are highlighted in context windows, which can be expanded up or down. The word or
phrase you entered as the search object appears highlighted in the text. Clicking on it, you can
go into the Logos dictionary and find it translated into many other languages, as well as see
images of it (clicking on the light bulb icon), hear the pronunciation or sound of it (clicking on
the loudspeaker) and ultimately searching the entire web for, your initial query.
