‘Not a trucking company!’ Say that with passion and fairly quickly and you get
the message! As we did at this week’s meeting when Don, co-director with
founder Bruce Plested, gave a comprehensive coverage of the history, underlying
principles, management style, services offered and the global spread where
these can be found.

Mainfreight
With annual revenue approaching $3 billion, Mainfreight is second only to Fonterra in NZ based business turnover. Basic statistics: 6726 employees in 239
branches in 21 countries including some tricky places such as Ukraine. 113 Million kilos of goods go by air and the company is the second highest user of Kiwirail
The logistic principle is to have the right thing in the right place at the right time.
With 30 warehouses and nearly 536,000 square metres of floor space the goods
for transporting, mainly food, beverages and building materials, are taken in,
sorted, packed and despatched with total efficiency to 30,000 customers.
29 November Bruce and Sue Martin
Management is non-hierarchical, there are no perks attached to status and promotion from within is the norm. People come before profit and the sharing of
the latter with workers - plus sponsorship of community initiatives e.g. Books in
Homes and Life Education Trust illustrate the philanthropic genes making up this
exemplary business. No strategic plans, just strategic direction and the aim to
better the weekly output of that in the previous year are the motivations to ensure the business stays around for 100 years – at least.

From the President’s Corner 21/11/2016 - by Peter Armstrong
Our Xmas Party will have a French theme and is in the capable hands of Wayne Griffin and Duncan Loney - more to come on
this event from these folk. The date is Monday 19th December at the Waipuna.
We have been approached by Bart Signal regarding the potential of a group who are meeting as an E-group who wish to work
under the auspices of a “standard” club to enable them to grow to an official satellite club (11+ members). Given thoughts by
some current members regarding the shape of how the Rotary Club of Pakuranga may evolve in the future, the above may well
be the opportunity for us to look at how we go about this. The Board approved that we open dialogue with this group to ascertain where, what and how we may further this and are we are able to do this in conjunction with how we further our club.
There will be an email coming out from ClubRunner to all members requesting those who wish their wife, husband or partner
to receive the Bulletin to respond with their details ie name, address and email address. We will create this entry under
“other” (that is the way ClubRunner deals with it) so in the future that email address will receive the Bulletin. ClubRunner
does not work the way the old web-site did with respect to alternate email addresses.
Next week our meeting is at Elm Park School, partners, wives, husbands are welcome. Please advise Richard Purchase as early
as possible if you have further attendees.

In this months Rotary Down Under an Australian Rotarian quotes: Encourage Rotarians to attend their first ever

were so impressed by the first and subsequent Conferences. Promotion of Conference Attendance should be a top
priority of all Clubs.
I think I can tick that Box! Please if you intend attending, register before the end of November for Early Bird Discount.
JUST FOR A LAUGH
I’m growing older but I still have so many unanswered questions!
I never found out who let the dogs out; the way to Sesame Street; why Dora doesn’t just use Google Maps; why we don’t ever see the
headline “Psychic wins lottery”; why women can’t put on mascara with their mouth closed; why “ abbreviated” is such a long word; why
lemon juice is made with artificial flavour yet dishwashing liquid is made with real lemons; why they sterilise the needle for lethal injections;
and why do you have to “put your two cents in” but it’s only a “penny for your thoughts” - where’s that extra penny going to? Why do The
Alphabet Song and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star have the same tune; why did you just try to sing those two previous songs; and just what is
“Victoria’s Secret?
So many questions —- still looking for answers
The Rotary Foundation Centennial and Pakuranga Rotary.
As you will be aware, TRF is celebrating 100 years of service by holding a family picnic at the Ellerslie Racecourse on Sunday the 19th of
February. That means the Rotary family as well as the public.
Being one of the larger and more iconic clubs, it would be great if we could showcase ourselves well. We are invited to bring our tent and
do whatever we want with / in it (well almost) We could do a fundraiser, have some sort of games / activity / display that would get the
public into our space. It does not have to be Rotary related. (one club is selling sausages and coffee and another offering lessons.. in what
I am not sure)
As it is not my place to be involved at Club level, please get your ideas to whoever gets to organize this event for our Club.
Sylvie Wilkinson.
