SKIING
Many congratulations to
Alex Lillywhite whose
latest national honour
is to be selected for the
British under sixteen
Alpine Squad to compete
in the Children’s (Youth)
International FIS race
in Slovenia, and in the
Hahnenkamm in Kitzbühel (one of the top venues in the world) at which it all
kicks off for the team of three girls and three boys with a giant slalom on one of
the most demanding World Cup slalom slopes, the Ganslernhang.Yikes.
No doubt winning the BARSC (British Alpine Racing Ski Clubs) under sixteen indoor snow
championships in Manchester last weekend helped!
SWING BAND IN CONCERT
All are very welcome to join
the Swing Band in its latest
concert at St Andrew’s Church,
Rushmere, 3pm on Sunday 12
October.
Tickets (available on the door)
£5 (under 18s free) includes
refreshments. This is the final
concert of St Andrew’s Sunday
series of concerts, and what
better than the Band’s fabulous
toe-tapping mix of classic
swing numbers and more
contemporary pieces to bring
it to a close.
YEAR 11 CAREERS: PARENTS’ EVENING
Tuesday 14 October; 6.30pm in the Seckford Theatre
Year 11 student recently sat the Careers Preview
Assessment – this is a very useful tool developed by
Cambridge Occupational Analysts (COA) to help students
identify possible career options.
Housemasters, Housemistresses and the Head of Careers have
held individual appointments with everyone to show them how
to use it and to encourage the research process.
The aim of this evening is to show Preview to you, the parents,
so that you too can be part of the process and support your
child.
We are very fortunate to have the Joint Managing Director of COA, Joyce Lane, to lead the evening. Drinks
and nibbles included!
WSPA… WAR HORSE… MAMMA MIA
(HOW ABOUT THAT FOR A MIXED MESSAGE?)
Check out the WSPA website http://wspanet.
co.uk for news of the latest ventures:
Tickets are now available for the 2014 Theatre Trip on
Thursday 18th December to see either Mamma Mia or
War Horse. Two coaches are booked to take us into
London leaving at 9.30am. Waste no time as tickets will go
fast: http://wspanet.co.uk/theatre14/. All parents, teachers
and children are welcome.
For fairness and efficiency’s sake, tickets to most of our events will now only be available online: we believe
it will save time and offer all parents and teachers a first-come-first-served ability to secure tickets which
generally sell out quickly.
For future events, we do not plan to use the Clarion Call system to keep you informed as they are all
advertised in the Woodbridgian Weekly but to be the first to know when booking opens - for events like the
much oversubscribed Burns Night Dinner which will open after half term – please sign up to the dedicated
WSPA email newsletter by following this link (http://www.woodbridge.suffolk.sch.uk/wspa-email-newslettercontact/).
Your next opportunity to enjoy an
early morning conversation is: 8.309.30am on 14 October in the Master’s
Study at the Abbey. Parents from
any of the three sites are more than
welcome.

DEATH VALLEY IN NOVEMBER
OWs Cam Wheeler and Tom Caraccio-Hewitt
delivered a passionate assembly to the massed
ranks of Years 7 to 11, raising awareness and
support for their forthcoming adventure in
aid of Teenage Cancer Trust and the fantastic
work this charity does, and did in particular for
Cameron’s older brother, Alistair.
With free t-shirts on offer at one stage to the
digitally savvy amongst the audience, there was
plenty to inspire. Now all the intrepid duo (actually
they are two of a trio which includes friend Scott
Girling) have to do is the challenge itself: 420km
(260 miles) cycling through the Death Valley in
temperatures from 28°C to 35°C (the valley
holds the highest temperature ever recorded in
the world of 56.7°C in 1913… easy does it boys). Valleys have sides, though, and they are also taking on
steep hill climbs each day, the biggest of 5490ft to Mountain Springs Summit before finishing the ride in
Las Vegas. And how much are they hoping to raise? £15,000. A mighty sum, but one that is now in range
for them as they have recently passed the £13,000 barrier. Please support them: www.justgiving.com/

..........................ANOTHER OW ON A CYCLE
Andrew Wiltshire has just completed his
own adventure, cycling length of Europe in
aid of Help for Heroes. He’s closing in on
his target of £10,000, so, please support
him; he’d be hugely grateful: https://www.

MUSIC
Many congratulations to Adam Cubitt and Jennifer Clare
who have been selected to play with the nationally
renowned Pro Corda chamber music ensemble at the
Wales Millennium Centre on Wednesday 5 November.

Model United Nations
Nine delegates– nine novice conference-goers
Reigate-bound… And before they knew it they
were on their feet, making policy statements on
behalf of their countries (Turkey and Rwanda) on
topics ranging from the use of harsh interrogation
techniques to controlling greenhouse emissions in
industrialising economies.
Particular credit must go to Jasper Beaumont who
showed great promise as a member of the Security
Council and was thus debating highly complex topics
with some very experienced delegates.
Cooking up a storm
Last week the Seckford Scheme cookery
group enjoyed an extraordinary visit to
Stokes Saucery at Rendlesham, watching
garlic mayonnaise being packaged, being
dazzled by the ingredients for mango chutney,
tasting ketchup after ketchup (especially the
Bloody Mary variety), learning about the
growth of the business and taking away a real
insight into commercial food production
Cross Country
All praise to our runners at the
recent English Schools’ Athletics
Association race.
It was bitterly cold in
Wymondham, but they weren’t
to be thwarted. The junior
girls scored a brilliant 33 points,
Sarah Barker winning overall
at a blistering pace, with Amy
Graham 5th,Victoria Burrows
13th, Sophie Graham 14th, Ianthe
Hill 18th and Charlotte Dinwiddy
24th to secure second place overall out of ten schools and thereby earn regional finals
qualification we think. The boys ran fantastically, too, George Rufford leading the team home
in 13th place, Alexander Evans-Lombe 33rd, Jack Leith 43rd, Charles Eaton 47th and Thomas
Beniost Wilson 50th, to finish seventh out of 12 schools. Congratulations one and all.
Rugby
The under twelve A team secured
a resounding win by 59-12 against
Holmwood House: assured
handling and elusive running put
the opposition under pressure throughout the game,
with the centre partnership of Hugo Thomas and Harry
Rennell at the heart of our victory scoring four and two
tries respectively; Charles Tetley played well at half back,
scored two tries of his own, and adding five conversions;
and it was good to see Adam Cubitt powering over late
in the game to give the forwards a try too.
Hockey
A mixed bag for girls’ hockey this week;
Many players had a good game with goal keeper
Woodbridge U15 v Ipswich High School
Score: Woodbridge 3 Ipswich High School 1 Emily Barker showing growing confidence in her
new role. The next game on Saturday against
Felsted will be more testing, with tighter marking in our defending quarter of the pitch essential.
Woodbridge 2nd XI v Wymondham U16
Unfortunately, the score does not reflect
Score: Woodbridge 0 Wymondham 9
how well the girls played in this tough match
(especially against a strong U16 team), and they should be congratulated on their continued
determination and teamwork during the game.
Woodbridge 1st Team v Wymondham
Woodbridge 1st Team showed great character
Score: Woodbridge 2 Wymondham 3
in defeat against Wymondham, the score line
reflecting a high quality competitive match. Despite the loss, the team can take confidence from
their performance.
U14 Hockey v Wymondham
In the driving rain the U14s dominated their
Score Woodbridge 4 Wymondham 0
game against Wymondham. Well done girls and
thanks soggy supporters!
U14 Girls’ Hockey Finals The under fourteens excelled in the recent Suffolk competition: game
one in the pools, against St Joseph’s resulted in a 4-0 victory. It was tighter against Ipswich High, but
we won 2-0, taking us through to a thrilling semi-final against RHS which came down to penalties,
but we went through. Brilliant, not least for the guaranteed qualification for the Regionals.
Framlingham looked good, though, and so it proved as the final was one game too far in the end, but
the girls gave it their all even in defeat and left the pitch with heads held high. They were soon back
on winning form though, playing the next day against Langley, and winning 7-0.
Junior Teams Hockey Against Norwich the junior teams all competed hard, with close wins and
losses to report: the firsts won 2-0, the seconds were defeated 3-5, and the thirds defeated 1-2,
while the fourths fared better, winning 3-1. The sixths, many playing their first ever match all played
very well, but in the end Norwich pressure told, and the vital goal was conceded for the narrowest
of defeats, 2-1.

Water Polo
Our Year 7 team, after just three (no doubt chilly) training sessions in our outdoor pool,
took on the might of Team Ipswich club team at Crown Pools in Ipswich recently.
The result? A resounding 7-2 victory in fine style, with Charles Eaton and Charles Tetley
both scoring hat tricks.
Parents, I wonder if you have discovered the fixtures
page under senior school sport on our website?

In particular please note the postponed 1st
XI Hockey v New Hall will now take place on
Tuesday 25 November at home at 2.30pm.
