Honors English 10 Summer Reading 2016-2017 *Worth 80 points of your 1st quarter grade* Welcome to Honors English 10! I am looking forward to ge ng to know all of you when we return to school in August. To help foster your reading and wri ng skills over the summer break and to prepare for Honors English 10, you have a few assignments to complete over the summer. I will be checking my email throughout the summer, so you may email me with ques ons at [email protected]. ALL SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL! You may type or handwrite your wri en responses. 1. READING ASSIGNMENT ONE: A fic onal book of your choice You will read one fic on book of your choice this summer. The book cannot be a book you have read in school, but can be from any genre (mystery, drama, etc). You also may not choose The Color of Water, The Crucible, or Julius Caesar, as we will be reading those in English 10. WRITING ASSIGNMENT ONE: Dialec cal Journal (50 points total) A dialec cal journal is a journal in which you write down meaningful quotes from a book and explain their significance and why they resonate with you. While you are reading your summer reading book, you should keep a dialec cal journal. You should create a chart, similar to the one below, to use as your dialec cal journal. The idea is that you keep track of these quotes while you are reading , rather than a er you are finished with the book. This may be hand‐wri en or typed. Below is an example of what a dialec cal journal should look like, and what your’s should include. Book Title: ________________________________ Author: ________________________________ Quote from the text My response This is where you will include each quote. Choose quotes that stuck out to you, that made you stop and think, or that you relate to. You will choose 10 total quotes and include the page number of each quote. At the end, you will have 10 entries in your dialec cal journal that look similar to the example below. Example: “While I knew I wouldn’t win, I had to try. I had a feeling I’d regret never trying for the rest of my life.” (pg. 76) This is where you will write your response. You can ask ques ons about the quote, explain how it relates to you, and/or explain why it stuck out. You will be graded on the thoroughness and though ulness you include in your responses. You must also write at least a 6‐8 sentence paragraph for each quote. Example: This quote stuck out to me because it reminds me of my own desire to always try my best. Similar to the character, I feel like I may regret it if I do not give everything I do my all. However, the character seems to be risking a lot in order to compete. Her parents have basically told her they will no longer support her if she keeps pursuing this dream, which to me, would be a reason to reconsider. It makes me wonder: how far should a person go in order to avoid having regrets later in life? 2. READING ASSIGNMENT TWO: Current Event Articles Choose and read THREE nonfiction current event articles of your choice . You may use the internet to find these ar cles, or you can go to any local library to search for ar cles. The ar cles can be from any legi mate news source (a newspaper, magazine, internet news source, etc) and must be objec ve ar cles (no opinion pieces). WRITING ASSIGNMENT TWO (30 points total): Respond to the following questions in COMPLETE SENTENCES for EACH of your articles. You may type or handwrite your responses. CITATION 1. List the source, tle of the ar cle, and author’s name. SUMMARY 2. Write a one paragraph (6‐8 sentences) objec ve summary of the ar cle. AUTHOR’S PURPOSE 3. In your own words, describe what you believe to be the author’s purpose for wri ng this text. 4. Cite two passages from the text that support the author’s purpose. TEXT STRUCTURE 5. How did the author choose to organize this text? Some examples of common text structures are cause/effect, chronological order, compare/contrast, problem/solu on, and descrip on. Use evidence from the ar cle to support your answer. EXTENDED RESPONSE: 6. Choose ONE of the following questions and write an extended ( 34 paragraph) r esponse. A. Choose any idea from the ar cle and respond to it. Cite THREE references from the ar cle in your response. OR B. Do you agree or disagree with the author?
