Children will explore how objects can start, stop or change

Summer Term, Year 1 Mrs Elgy
Spell: words containing each of the 40+ phonemes;
common exception words and days of the week.
Children will be able to name all the letters of the
alphabet. Use common prefixes and suffixes. Children
will learn and apply spelling rules. Children will write
simple dictated sentences.
Handwriting Children will form correctly lower case
letters, capitals and digits. Children will practice
handwriting in letter families.
Writing Children will compose sentences orally before
writing. Children will use sentences to form short
narratives. Reread sentences to check they make sense.

PSHCE
Art and Design
Children will explore the work of famous French artists
namely Van Gogh, Monet and Rousseau as part of studies
about a range of artists, craft makers and designers.
Children will produce art work linked to our Salisbury
Cathedral trip on the Magna Carta and design and make a
Baron’s shield. They will use a range of materials. They
will use drawing painting and sculpture. They will
develop techniques of colour, pattern, line, shape, form
and space.
Design and Technology
Design purposeful, functional and appealing products. They
will generate, develop, model and communicate ideas to
create a moving theatre. They will explore and use
mechanisms.
They will select from and use a range of tools and materials.
The will evaluate existing products and own ideas and
products. Use sewing to design and create a mobile phone
case.
Building a Healthy future
Children will think about voting
and democracy. They will think
about rules and consequences.
RE
Why do Christians believe in God?
Children will explore the idea of the 10
commandments. Children will think about
the Christian Creation story. They will
think about God as creator and the
wonderful world we live in.
Geography
Physical geography Children will identify
seasonal and daily weather patterns in the United
Kingdom.
Geographical skills and fieldwork Children will
explore maps and plans. Using a bird’s eye view.
Locational knowledge Year 1 will identify the
four locations of surviving copies of the Magna
Carta including Salisbury.
History
Children will continue to develop an awareness of chronology;
and a sense of time. They will develop their vocabulary with the
days of the week and months of the year and also yesterday, last
week, last year.
We shall look at events beyond living memory that are
significant; Magna Carta 1215.
Year 1 will also consider the lives of significant individuals in
the past who have contributed to national and international
achievements e.g. King John.
Children will study local history through our trip to Salisbury
Cathedral.
