Speech-Language Pathologists
Summer Study
in Quito, Ecuador
SLP Training in Andean Ecuador
Experience immersion in Ecuador’s culture and language
while becoming a culturally, linguistically, and clinically
proficient SLP who can better serve US bilinguals with
communication disorders.
This 6 week program is for professional SLPs and
entry-level or current graduate speech-language pathology
students who have basic to proficient Spanish skills. The
program includes home-stays, intensive Spanish classes,
seminars on culture, education and health topics, visits to
and clinical experience in settings serving individuals with
communication disabilities, training on bilingual SLP
practices, and overnight group excursions. Seminars are
taught by Ecuadorean professionals and the accompanying
PSU professor.
Academic Content
You will learn from Ecuadorean and US professionals
on topics including Ecuador, culture, health, education,
knowledge and skills for assessing and treating bilingual
individuals. Learning will occur in the classroom, during
visits to museums, schools, clinics, and while participating
on weekend excursions to areas outside of Quito. You will
develop clinical skills and cultural understanding so that
you can better serve children from other language and
cultural backgrounds. Field studies and clinical practica
will be in sites serving individuals with communication
disorders.
Intensive Spanish language study will be in small groups
based on Spanish language level. Content of language study
will emphasize oral and written proficiency as training
specific to SLPs.
Participants receive graduate credit. Everyone participates
in clinical experiences; those who need supervised clinical
hours will register for 2 additional graduate credits.

Location
Increase your ability to more effectively serve your Spanish
speaking clients and their families in beautiful
Quito, Ecuador. While the 2nd smallest country in South
America, Ecuador is one of the most geographically
diverse countries of the world. With a diverse population
of nearly 1.4 million people, Quito is a vibrant and modern
city less than an hour from traditional indigenous
communities. Only 22 miles from the equator, the city’s
location at 10,000 ft. has given it the reputation of “eternal
spring” temperatures throughout the year. Quito is
surrounded by natural beauty, by the mountains ringing
the city, some volcanic, some with white capped peaks,
lushly forested hills and a fertile valley.
Claudia Meyer the Clinical Director at Portland State University will accompany students and professionals on this
program.
Claudia is an ASHA certified SLP and has lived and travelled
extensively in Ecuador and Latin America. As a bilingual
speech-language pathologist in the Portland area, she
coordinates the Bilingual Clinic at Portland State University.
With her colleagues, Christina Gildersleeve-Neumann
and Maria Kapantzoglou, Claudia coordinates a master’s
level Bilingual Concentration and Ecuador program at
PSU to train students for future careers as culturally and
linguistically competent SLPs.
Housing
Individuals will live with host families. Lodging and
meals with host families are included in the cost of
the program.
Program Costs
Program fee will be between $3,578 and $3,986. This
covers lodging, meals, group transportation, language
and academic instruction, two weekend excursions and
international insurance.
Total graduate tuition for the 8 credit, 6 week program
is between $655 and $928. To receive graduate level
clinical credit, 2 additional credits are required. Tuition
for these 2 credits will be between $232 to $464 with an
additional program fee between $141 and $270.
In addition, budget approximately $2,000 for airfare,
personal expenses, travel and immunizations.

continuing education options may also apply.
