Portland State University Faculty Location Increase your ability to more effectively serve your Spanish speaking clients and their families in beautiful Quito, Ecuador. While the 2nd smallest country in South America, Ecuador is one of the most geographically diverse countries of the world. With a diverse population of nearly 1.4 million people, Quito is a vibrant and modern city less than an hour from traditional indigenous communities. Only 22 miles from the equator, the city’s location at 10,000 ft. has given it the reputation of “eternal spring” temperatures throughout the year. Quito is surrounded by natural beauty, by the mountains ringing the city, some volcanic, some with white capped peaks, lushly forested hills and a fertile valley. Claudia Meyer the Clinical Director at Portland State University will accompany students and professionals on this program. Claudia is an ASHA certified SLP and has lived and travelled extensively in Ecuador and Latin America. As a bilingual speech-language pathologist in the Portland area, she coordinates the Bilingual Clinic at Portland State University. With her colleagues, Christina Gildersleeve-Neumann and Maria Kapantzoglou, Claudia coordinates a master’s level Bilingual Concentration and Ecuador program at PSU to train students for future careers as culturally and linguistically competent SLPs.
