newsletter june 23 - St Josephs

This week is Refugee Week (19-25 June)
A PRAYER FOR JUSTICE FOR REFUGEES AND ASYLUM SEEKERS
God of mercy, help me to remember: My ancestors came across the seas!
Help me keep in my mind, those who came long ago and those who now come to our
shores.
As I face you in prayer, God of Compassion, I remember Jesus’ command: Love one
another, as I have loved you;
And Pope Francis’ call to open our hearts “To a universal communion which excludes
nothing and no one”
I pray for those forced to leave family, home and all they hold dear;
May they find safe passage and helping hands.
I pray for an end to the wars and oppression that forced them to leave;
I pray that those who welcome them are blessed in abundance.
And with deep humility and a heart hungry for justice,
I pray that we Australians, citizens and leaders,
Open our eyes, our minds and our hearts
That we may see, understand and welcome
CAPSA
Catholic Alliance for People Seeking Asylum
Dear Parents and Children,
This week we welcome Emilie Hickey to our staff. Emilie is a 4th year pre-service teacher from Australian
Catholic University and will be working with Kate in 3K. Emilie commenced this week and will return for the
first two weeks of next term. She then joins us again in the last five weeks of term three for her final
teaching rounds. Welcome Emilie.
I would like to thank all of the students and staff for another terrific term. The positive mindset and hardworking attitude of our students makes St Joseph’s a wonderful place to be!! I’d also like to thank the staff
for their diligence in providing a stimulating learning environment and engaging our students in positive
learning experiences throughout the term.
On behalf of the staff I’d like to thank all of our families for your support this semester. I hope everyone has
a safe holiday and that you enjoy an abundance of quality family-time together.

CHESS CLUB
On Thursday 16th June, 4 students from St Joseph’s Primary School competed in another Chess
Victoria Zonal qualifying tournament hosted by Viewbank Primary School. It was a big tournament
with 132 students representing 14 schools. Clocks were ticking, pieces were clicking, the kids were
concentrating well, everyone was well-behaved…
Well done to all students who attended the tournament and a special congratulations to Ben
Armstrong, our top player, who scored an amazing 6 points out of 7 and came 3rd, winning the
Gold medal for the Grade 5-6 division, and Max Hamilton, who scored a very respectable 5.5
points to come 9th, winning the Bronze medal for the Grade 5-6 division!
Also, heartiest congratulations to Emily Armstrong and Tivona Dang for giving it their best and for
gaining valuable experience for their next attempt. Luck comes to those who persist. 

Steve from OnPsych is in the process of contacting all families who have returned
their OnPsych consent forms to school. Sessions will begin early in Term 3 during
school hours.
Any parents who may be interested in this service and haven’t yet lodged an
application form are more than welcome to talk to Mary or myself to book an informal
meetings of around 10-15 minutes with Steve. This would provide parents with an
opportunity to discuss the suitability of this service for your child. Parent packs are
available at the office.

Wellbeing Leader
Congratulations to all the students who participated in the St Joseph’s Jump Rope for Heart.
We managed to raise a very impressive $173.85. Well done to our Sports Leaders; Ruby,
Victoria, James, Olivia, Amelia and Marcus for running the event and making the morning
the success that it was. Thank you to all the family and friends who came along to show
their support.
Miss Emmie.
As you would know we had the
Jump Rope for Heart performance
on the 22nd June. The grade prep
to six children learnt a routine and
performed it to music. It was a
success!!!
The Sports Captains would like to
thank everyone who donated money
to the Heart Foundation. We
appreciate every donation given.
Thank you and we hope you enjoyed
the morning.
From the Sport Captains,
Victoria, Ruby, Olivia, Marcus,
James and Amelia
On Wednesday Miss Emmie put together several performances to raise money and awareness
for the hear foundation, as it is the number one killer of Australians.
WOW, what a wonderful morning of jumping and skipping we all had!!! Everyone had a great
morning but this wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for one person, Miss Emmie…
On behalf of the school, we would like to thank Miss Emmie for sacrificing her time for the
students to practise and prepare the presentation so it was as awesome as it could be.
We believe the skipping performances were a hit among the parents, and we hope they are
looking forward to next year’s presentation as well. Thank you Miss Emmie and we are so
much fitter now that we have completed Jump Rope for Heart.
School Captains,
Lily Cormie and Max Hamilton

Election Day
If you haven’t already, please consider donating some time to the Election day rosters. There
are a range of different roles to be filled from serving on a stall for a while to running a BBQ.
Sadly, it’s the same few volunteers already stretched to the limit so if you are planning on
volunteering for just one thing this year let this be it! This is such a huge opportunity to show
the community just how great this school is and we can only do it if EVERYONE pitches in.
