National Swiss project for ensuring a healthy body

Profile
- National Swiss project
for ensuring a healthy body weight in young people
Young people need modern and age-appropriate preventative measures
These days, children and young people are increasingly confronted with hugely calorific foods
and drinks – and aren’t necessarily likely to exercise. Yet equipped with the right knowledge
about the relationship between diet and exercise, they themselves can determine their own
healthy body weight. Unfortunately, puberty and the tendency to break away from parental influence make it difficult to get this information across properly. With its new project
«GORILLA», the Schtifti Foundation has decided to implement an approach that has already
proven effective, in which young role models communicate with children and young people
at their own level. To achieve a broader and more sustained effect, this approach has been
supplemented by different modules, for example an interactive eLearning facility.
A Schtifti Foundation Project
Since 2003 we have been campaigning strongly for a healthy
body weight for children and young people. We have taken
young freestyle sports professionals and chefs/nutritionists along
to schools, where these inspiring role models helped raise the
children’s awareness of the relationship between exercise and food.
Instead of hitting the books, there have been lessons in nutrition,
breakdancing, Footbagging, Frisbee and skateboarding. And this
youth-oriented communication technique didn’t only go down well
with the kids: an accompanying study proved its success - an achievement that was even honoured with two awards. The
«Freestyle

GORILLA is the new national prevention project aimed at
encouraging children and young people to get a balanced diet
and more exercise.
The centrepiece is the web platform www.gorilla.ch, which
includes an eLearning module called «GORILLA Space».
This eLearning facility provides information that is relevant for
maintaining a healthy body weight.
Children and young people gain points by exploring the topics of
exercise and diet in a fun way with the eLearning tool.
Individual topic areas conclude with a test.
Correct answers award pupils a certain number of points, for
which there are prizes to be won.
These encourage exercise and/or stimulate interest in diet.
The points are simultaneously credited to the pupil’s school, so
effectively there are two types of prizes on offer:
Individual prizes such as skateboards, small cookbooks,
Actismiles (physical activity monitors), vouchers and Meet &
Greet the stars events. Each young person must take part in a
draw to win. Includes modules developed especially for the
target group.
School prizes such as day workshops for freestyle sports, power
games, a container full of sports equipment, etc. A winner will
be automatically drawn from among all schools. Includes
modules developed especially for the target group.

Canton offers
Health Promotion Switzerland is sponsoring the development of
GORILLA. The GORILLA module offered by the Schtifti Foundation
for children and young people aged between 10 and 18 can be implemented by the cantons as part of the action programme «Healthy
Body Weight», provided that it is in line with the GORILLA concept and is by prior arrangement with Health Promotion Switzerland.
The 7 GORILLA modules are coordinated and interlinked. The topics
appear in all modules and are connected in terms of content. The
different levels cover everything from theory to the pupil’s own
activity.

GORILLA Actismile
The GORILLA Actismile uses a 3-dimensional acceleration sensor
to continually measure, classify and store all physical activity data.
Children and young people can load the data onto their GORILLA
account and win extra points simply by exercising. Validated by the
Federal Office for Sport (BASPO).
Other GORILLA tools
• GORILLA home economics poster: nutrition pyramid and energy
balance in the GORILLA way.
• GORILLA slalom skateboarding kit: made of high-quality
material with simple instructions, for use for Design and
Technology or project weeks, for example.
• GORILLA footbag: the footbag or ‘hacky sack’ brings fun to
everyday exercise. Whether in the playground, park or even at
