HETComms HETCo T2A Newsletter June 2013 All 39 Comms Rooms Handed Over Delivered ahead of schedule New Heathrow Benchmark Better than T5 This is what I do. This is why IIF. Spencer Cahalarn, Principal Planner, HETCo 2, knows what matters to him. What matters to you? Make safety a value. Be Safe. Be Proud. Be T2A. 2 HETComms, June 13 Welcome to the 16th edition of your T2A HETComms PROGRESS DURING MAY Pablo with members of the HETCo team who contributed to delivering the 39 Comms Rooms. June has been an exciting month on the project as we witnessed a number of major announcements about Terminal 2. The 4th June 2014 has now been rubber stamped into everyone’s diary as the official opening day of the terminal. To think the first passenger flight scheduled to pull into a Terminal 2 stand will land at Heathrow in less than one years’ time is an exciting thought. To celebrate this announcement, we thought it would be fitting to do something a little bit special to recognise a number of you who have played a massive part to make this announcement a possibility. Therefore 7 of you were recognised for your continued efforts at T2A and I encourage everyone to follow these individuals’ examples and keep up the great work (read more about it on page 4). The Terminal has also be named Terminal 2: ‘The Queens Terminal’, in honour of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. A fitting name for the history behind the buildings our project has replaced at Heathrow. Keeping with this theme of announcements, I would also like to take the opportunity to reveal that HETCo will be introducing a new approach to Health and Safety over the coming months. We want to hear from you, the people on site, on what we can do to make this project the safest in the country. To achieve this, myself and other senior HETCo staff will be accompanying our supply chain in delivering a number of companyspecific stand downs. The smaller sessions are designed to reinforce our message that you have the support of both HETCo and your own employer to stop work if you believe it is unsafe to continue. Please keep an eye out in the next couple of weeks for more details about the briefings and their outcomes. Be Safe. Be Proud. Be T2A. Pablo Riesco, Project Director April and May were two fantastic months in terms of H&S. With over 2,700 people now on site every day, it is imperative that all of us continue to make safety our number one focus. It is our goal to make sure we are able to celebrate our massive success, injury-free, on 19th November. The project AFR keeps on dropping and now stands at 0.06. Internally • The Terminal Service Centre was successfully handed over on 3rd May, a massive achievement and a key piece of work. It is now being fitted by the SSPs to become the key management and control room within the Eastern Campus. • On 13th May, for the first time in Heathrow, a retail hand over (SC04) was completed not only snag free, but also ahead of schedule. This is testimony to the excellent work being accomplished by the Retail, HETCo and HAL teams all working together. • Finishing works are progressing well. • Some areas are practically finished, with some areas on Gates level having the floor protection removed. 2700 Operatives on site • Toilets continue to be fully fitted. • FLaN 218 is completely operable, with an excellent finish. • The focus is now on the launch of the patchwork quilt, to release the ceiling voids to enable the installation of the tiles. Externally • The drier weather compared to previous months has helped the good progress made in the stands during this period. • Fit-out of the ancillary buildings keeps on progressing at a good pace. • More air bridges were delivered in the period, contributing to T2A looking like a finished terminal from the outside. Accident Frequency Rate of 0.06 3 HETComms, June 13 T2A HEROES Sarah Carpenter Office Manager EC Harris / HAL What are your role responsibilities? I am the Office Manager for the 5th floor of Voyager House as well as a Personal Assistant to EC Harris partners Richard Walker, Brian Conlon and Will Bentley. I also manage Duncan Pickard’s diary. My role here is to oversee the day to day running of the office. So that might include anything from organising meetings, Comms events and socials - just to name a few. I think I am seen as the ‘go to’ girl. So if someone has a problem, I am usually the first point of contact. If I can’t solve it, I’ll definitely point them in the right direction. Where have you worked before? I have been at Heathrow for 8 years. I started first at T5 in October 2005 and before that I was a PA at a local secondary school located at High Wycombe. I have been living there my whole life. What is the best thing about working at Heathrow / T2A? What is the biggest challenge working at T2A? Definitely the people. We have a great team Not having enough time in the day to help here and I can honestly say that I would not everyone. Despite how I enjoy being the ‘go enjoy my job nearly as much as I do, if it to’ girl, sometimes you get so busy you have weren’t for the people. I find everyone is really to prioritise. Sarah was nominated by HAL T2A Development Director, Duncan Pickard, EC Harris Partner, Will Bentley and EC Harris Partner, Brian Conlon. Sarah has made an invaluable contribution to the HAL Client Team and to the success of the T2A project. This is accomplished through her thoroughness and attention to detail in providing effective solutions and delivery. She is also a forward thinker looking to solve problems well in advance and mitigate any potential impacts. She always displays a positive attitude and always handles any issues with a mature professional demeanor beyond her years. It is easy to overlook Sarah’s dedication to the project but she attracts the praise and awe from the entire team. This includes support in areas of HR NOMINATE your T2A Hero! advice, administration, operational support, people management, recruitment, financial management of fees and change control on fees. This is testament to her incredibly high workload threshold which she will never let on due to her modest and unassuming attitude. Sarah is also a completely dedicated and committed team member. She is respected by all - both close team colleagues but also remote colleagues who do not have much interaction with her, but who all comment on her efficiency and informed approach when they do. Finally, Sarah possibly won’t quite get why she has been nominated for this….. and that sums her up! It’s just what she does…her proactive involvement with and support of us all is just second nature to her but so critically important to those of us who completely depend on her. ? Contact Tim Nairne Communications Coordinator HETCo 07808 242948 [email protected] 4 HETComms, June 13 Setting the Standard All 39 communications rooms inside T2A have been handed over, two weeks ahead of schedule and to a standard of quality superior to that of T5. The milestone was reached on Thursday 30th May and despite being completed early, the high standard of workmanship has been benchmarked by HAL as the new quality standard expected across the airport. Originally scheduled to be completed on 12th June, the final room was handed over snag free which is testament to the successful collaboration of a number of different teams from various contractors, working together to deliver this outstanding accomplishment. “This achievement shows the ‘snag free’ strategy can be delivered ahead of schedule, safely and to the highest quality,” said T2 Development Director Stephen Livingstone. “Congratulations to all of the T2A teams who contributed to reaching this fantastic milestone.” The signing off ceremony was held in SCR room L3-30, the final room to be handed over and was attended by Projector Director, Pablo Riesco, and the various team members whose work helped deliver the key date. Special mention must also go to the tireless efforts of the HETCo fire marshalls and logistics team members who time and time again spotlessly clean the room and ensure any persons entering utilise the boot protectors before stepping on the finished floor. Delivering the Extraordinary Sometimes it is difficult to find the time to take a step back from your work and just revel in what you have accomplished; to think about the role you are playing in the delivery of this project. Therefore in early June, HETCo and HAL offered the T2A workforce the chance to take 30 minutes out of their day, to look at what makes this project so extraordinary. The ‘Extraordinary Heathrow Expo’ was held in the onward travels area on Arrivals level and allowed everyone on the project to get a better knowledge of the intricate systems being installed inside the building. This included displays from Honeywell, Lindner, Siemens and Hilti. By far one of the most popular displays was no doubt the live CCTV footage being broadcasted by Tyco as workers watched themselves walking around the expo. Another of the best crowd attractions was not even located inside the building. Sitting outside in the Voyager House courtyard was a F1 Ferrari motorcar. Not just for show, the car symbolises that everyone working at T2A has a part to play in a sophisticated team that is helping to deliver the ‘winning formula’. The car represents a mix of extraordinary quality in its engineering to continually create the highest standards, extraordinary safety with the F1’s exemplary safety track record and extraordinary team work in the people responsible for keeping the car running. Each visitor was also given a little gift as a token of gratitude in the form of a Heathrow badge, to commemorate all their hard work and as a reminder for when they look back on their time at the airport. 5 HETComms, June 13 T2A Open: th 4 June 2014 Terminal 2 will be welcoming its first flight on 4th June 2014. A United Airlines flight from Chicago is scheduled to land at 05.55 and with it the first passengers to walk through the fully functional terminal 2. To announce this major milestone, HETCo and HAL held a joint ceremony to mark ‘One Year to Go’ which coincided with the annual HETCo SHEQ awards. The ceremony was attended by over 3000 of the T2A team and 60 specially invited stakeholders which included numerous national media agencies. Along with the announcement of the terminal opening date, the audience was treated to the premiere of the new Terminal 2 fly-through. The new presentation provides a narrated passenger journey throughout the building, starting via the Multi-storey Carpark until you exit the building as a newly arrived passenger. Recognising the special occasion, HETCo took the opportunity to present seven individuals, who over the course of the project, have gone that extra mile to be leaders of the Health, Safety and Quality culture of the project. Each person received a mini iPad and were presented with the award in front of their peers in recognition of their continued efforts to make the T2A site, the safest in the country. Terminal 2 will eventually serve 20 million passengers a year and be home to 23 Star Alliance airlines, as well as Aer Lingus, Virgin Atlantic Little Red and Germanwings carriers. Despite being built in the centre of the world’s busiest international airport, the £2.5bn construction project has not disrupted daily operations. The new Terminal 2 is one of the largest privately funded construction projects in the UK and will have supported 35,000 jobs across the country by the time it opens. The main build is on schedule for completion in November 2013 and will be followed by six months of testing. By the time the terminal opens for service, it will have undergone 182 trials and been tested by 14,000 people. The SHEQ winners were: Hendrik Husselman (HETCo) Paul Hayter (Astins) Deividas Matulevicius (Taiyo) Hedley Pollard (Lindner) Lewis Robinson (Ferrovial Agroman) Lukasz Czubas (Vetters) Jimmy Boyle (CHt) 6 HETComms, June 13 Constructing Excellence Winners HETCo was a winner at the London and the South East Constructing Excellence Awards 2013.T2A walked away at the end of the night as the winners of the Health and Safety category, for its industry leading approach to site safety. HETCo was also nominated as finalist in a further two categories; Sustainability and Performance in Use for the design and function of T2A’s unique roof. The judging panel for the Health & Safety award, which was sponsored by the Association for Project Safety, reported that: “Achieving an AFR of 0.05 on a billion pound project on a complicated site is a remarkable achievement and testament to widespread adoption of a positive health and safety culture.” Each member of the T2A workforce should be proud of this achievement, for it is your effort and commitment to our culture that has made this possible. The award now qualifies the project for the national awards which will be held later in the year. Leading the Industry in HSE At T2A we have a Health and Safety culture that is raising the bar for the entire construction industry. This is by and large an outcome of the dedicated individuals who spend tireless hours ensuring you get home safely every day. The HSE team continues to gain industry recognition for their engagement with the workforce, whether it is sitting down for a one to one interview or delivering an IIF workshop, each member works to keep you safe. The efforts of the team, lead by HSE Leader Richard Byrne, have not gone unnoticed and can be seen in one of their most recent achievements, receiving a gold rating in the annual RoSPA awards (pictured). This reputation has also led to a change in the team as Richard has now been drafted to oversee the Health and Safety of all LOR projects in the region. To continue our success in this area, Sean Rath has been joined us to ensure our approach to health and safety is as strong as ever in the final 6 months of the project. Sean is no stranger to the project and the airport as he has been transferred from his role at Ferrovial Agroman overseeing Heathrow projects. We wish Richard the very best in his new position, and at the same time, welcome Sean as the newest member of the HETCo Team. As the Queen celebrated her birthday in June, Heathrow officially announced that our new Terminal 2 will be known as ‘Terminal 2 : The Queen’s Terminal’ in honour of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. With the Terminal to open on 4 June 2014, it is now nearly sixty years after the Queen opened the original terminal building. On that day in 1955, Her Majesty unveiled a plaque naming it ‘Queen’s Building’ and, showing great foresight said “Whatever form air travel may take in the future, and we may be certain that striking changes lie ahead, London Airport will I am sure continue to grow in importance as one of the world centres of air traffic.” The new name was proposed to Buckingham Palace to mark Her Majesty’s longstanding association with the site, and we’re honoured that she has agreed to give her name to the new terminal. Heathrow’s regal past: 1952: The former Princess Elizabeth returned to Heathrow as Queen Elizabeth II, after her father, George VI, died whilst she was touring Kenya. 1955: Queen Elizabeth II opened Heathrow’s first permanent passenger terminal, the Europa Building, which was later renamed Terminal 2. 1969: Her Majesty formally inaugurated Terminal 1. 1977: Queen Elizabeth II unveiled the Heathrow - London Underground connection 2008: Terminal 5 was opened by Her Majesty. The Queen’s Terminal Community Corner 7 HETComms, June 13 Sparks learn to fly Rallying the Troops They are at it again. 8 electricians from CHt have once again brought the ‘extreme’ to their latest fund-raising adventure for Heathrow Special Needs Farm. Coinciding with completing 8 hours of free fall training and gaining their level 1 certificate in accelerated free fall, the sparks have raised a further £2,800 for the charity. This means they have now raised a total of £7,900 when adding together the funds raised from last year’s jump. The group, organised by Johnny Callaghan, fell a total of 168,000 feet which equates to over 30 miles. CHt now have 20 electricians who have completed their first solo skydive from 12,000ft. Since opening in 1986, Heathrow Special Needs farm goal has been to bring disabled people into contact with farm animals for therapeutic benefits. Congratulations to our 8 new skydivers. We asked the question and T2A has answered it. Last month HETComms called for donations of small pieces of home to send overseas to the men of the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment in Afghanistan. HETCo Utilities Co-Ordinator Charlie Caswell has enlisted the help of Logistics Support Tracy Thorpe to collect items for his son Brendan, currently serving as part of the regiment. So far the response has been amazing. Sweets, playing cards, polo shirts, stress balls, toy lego cranes, fold up frisbees and lip balm have all been packaged up and are awaiting delivery to the guys. Thank you to all the companies who have donated items to this great cause. If anyone has some items they would like to donate, get in quick and speak to Charlie or Tracy Thorpe on the 4th floor of Voyager House. Life by the Horns HETCo have had the opportunity to celebrate a number of special occasions at T2A - birthdays, engagements and welcoming new babies. But none are yet to leave the same impression than celebrating the marriage of HETCo’s Project Controls Director Alvaro Borges to his wife Eloisa. The unassuming husband was blind-sided by a number of his HETCo colleagues for his stag weekend. The only details passed onto Alvaro was for him to bring a packed bag to work one Friday, unaware he was destined that evening for Hamburg, Germany. To start off the weekend on a note that would set the tone of the celebration, Alvaro was marshalled out of the Voyager House office dressed in a bull onsey. This spectacle did not only catch the eye of every person on the 4th floor and at the airport, but was one of which the people of Pamplona would be proud. Alvaro has since returned extremely happy and fresh from his honeymoon and thanks everyone for their wishes of support. 8 HETComms, June 13 Meet the Team Lifting Francois Swanepoel – HETCO Appointed the ground to be the magnificent building you Andy Corrin – Lifting Supervisor Person (AP) for Lifting Operations see today.
