Talking About…TROUBLE
“TROUBLE” and her owner/handler, Cheryl Subject from the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog volunteer program
have joined our volunteer team at SBGHC. You can find them both visiting patients at the Kincardine site. They had
to undergo strict requirements before they were permitted to visit at the hospital --- up-to-date vaccination shots, and
obedience training/testing to name a few. It has been found through research that by petting an animal it will lower
your blood pressure, help you recover from your illness sooner, reduce depression/anxiety and feelings of loneliness.
The patients beam with delight and look forward to each and every visit!

The Bones in Our Body
(Submitted by 10 yr. old Priya Kalra)
To keep our body strong, we have to keep our bones healthy.
We can do this by drinking milk, exercising and going in the
sun to absorb vitamin D. We actually have 206 bones in our
body. The three smallest bones are in our ear. They are
called the stirrup, hammer and anvil. Our rib cage is one of
the biggest conglomerations in the human body and is one of
the most painful parts of the body to get repaired. Our rib
cage is also very important, because it protects our heart.
Our scull is very important too, because it protects our brain.
So lets‟ do what we can to keep our body strong, our bones
healthy, and have fun!!!!!
“Our volunteer groups across the province are
always looking for individuals who can help
make a difference in their county and
community. There are many different ways you
can help. Serving food at a safety day for kids,
packing goody bags, teaching a safety topic,
posting SMV signs, transporting display booths,
sharing your own survival story – there are many
ways to help. You can contribute to a single
event or offer to help out on a more regular
basis. It‟s up to you… We appreciate the help of
all our volunteers”. Contact us…

ONTARIO BREAST SCREENING PROGRAM
CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY
It is wonderful to be able to celebrate the success of the OBSP which, over the past two decades has
provided more than 3.6 million screens to 1.1 million women and has detected over 19,000 cancers, the
majority in early cancer stages.
The statistics show that the number of women ages 50-69 dying from breast cancer decreased 35%
between 1990 and 2007. This decrease is credited to both improved treatments and increased
participation in mammography, is a tribute to the progress made by the program.
We have been an OBSP Site for 12 years now and are very proud of our continued growth. We began
the program with screenings one day twice a month and currently are
hosting two days a week and sometimes three. We book 20 women per day. The program is open to all
women 50 years of age and over. You call and make your own appointment. Visit the site and within
two weeks receives the results of the examination mail. You receive a letter when it is time to return for
your next examination. All you have to do is make the phone call.
Our site has a Registered Nurse Examiner and an X-Ray technician, both trained by OBSP. We have a
rotating staff of 13 Volunteers who cheerfully greet you. They are there to check your mailing
information and make you comfortable. They will try to make your visit as pleasant as possible.
Women of all ages are encouraged to consult their health professional to have a mammogram.
Our hospital boasts one of the most up to date digital mammography machines in the area. All women
are encouraged to take advantage of this. Early detection saves lives.
If you are 50+ and wish to join the Ontario Breast Screening Program,
please call: 519-881-4030 or 1-800-461-0640.
