A Word from
Our Pastor Fr. Ron Weissbeck
My dear family in Christ,
We are now in the middle of August and, in part,
we are drawn to the Solemnity of the Assumption of the
Blessed Virgin Mary. She is the first human being who
enjoys the fullness of resurrected life as she enters the divine realm, heaven, as queen of heaven and earth. From
her first response in the Gospel of Luke, “May it be done to
me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). Mary’s yes was
not limited to words but lived out. It is this fulfillment that
has drawn believers to her down through the ages, and the
unique place and role that she has in the history of salvation. Thus, the assumption is the expression of faith
that was proclaimed in 1950. Now we have a number of holy days in our calendar year. However, it has been decided by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops that the holy
days honored with the obligation to participate in Mass
have to fall on Tuesday through Friday. The exceptions are
the celebration of the Immaculate Conception, December
8th and Christmas, December 25th. These two holy days,
no matter what day of the week they fall, are to be observed as binding on all Catholics. This may be confusing to some and questioned by
others. If they are holy days why are they, arbitrarily, observed? The simple answer is pastoral. In more and
more parts of the United States, especially in the more rural
dioceses, the number of priests to serve the needs for Mass
on the weekend, plus a holy day should it fall on Saturday
or Monday, puts an undue burden on some.
Locally, there are always Masses available here at
St. John the Baptist on these holy days, but they are optional and relative to the parishioner’s faith and devotion. In fact, we have Mass available here every day
of the year with two Masses in the morning, 6:30 a.m. and
8:15 a.m. Allow me to return to the theme of the Assumption
of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is the handmaid of the
Lord who lived out her commitment. The Blessed Virgin
Mary, therefore, is not only acknowledged as the servant of
mercy, love, and trust but as the vessel of joy and peace.
All of this is summarized in her presence among us and
with us in the life of the Church. The acknowledgement
that the church clarifies is stated by Pius XII in the document declaring the assumption, “The Assumption of the Blessed
Virgin is the singular participation in her Son’s Resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians” (CCC, #966).
In the Blessed Virgin Mary, our hope is realized as
she is held up to us as the servant who lived out the invitation to cooperate in the gift of salvation by giving
birth to the savior, Jesus of Nazareth, and standing under
the cross as he gave up his life.

RCIA, with Anna Campbell
Do you know that there are people who believe
the Catholic faith may not be approached without an invitation? A few years ago I spoke
with a man who had attended Mass with his wife for 54
years. After her death I asked him why he hadn’t chosen to
join her in her faith. His answer...he was never asked! I
invited him he soon made his profession of faith!
Do you know someone who is waiting to be invited? By
our baptism we are called to evangelize. I urge you to offer
an invitation to someone to come inquire about our faith. If
everyone you know is active in their Catholic faith, please
pray that those who may not be your friends will find their
way to know God. If you have questions please call.
To learn more about our RCIA program, please contact

TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
NO HE VENIDO A TRAER PAZ, SINO LA
GUERRA.
discípulos: “¿Piensan que he venido a traer paz
Fr. Gerardo
a la tierra? No, sino división”.
comunidad. La fe es el sábado 8 de octubre a las 9:00 am.
Está programa la misa a la 1:00 pm. El retorno será a las
4:00 pm. Fr Gerardo
