It's a wonderful world and, it's people like you who make it that way by the things that they do —Sincerely, Stella Steeves Precious Children BY PASTOR HENRY. A. OZIRNEY Mew Life Baptist Church Children are so precious. Each time I put my hand on the tousled hair of one of my boys I realize what a tremendous gift God has given me and what a responsibility to love them and bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Thinking of this reminds me of the story I recently heard about Danny. Danny was the adopted son of a Winnipeg couple. The father was in the construction business, got quite wealthy and so he gave Danny everything he ever wanted. Then hard times came for his business and money became scarce. One day Danny, now 15, came and asked him for $10. The father replied that he didn't have any money. "It's only ten dollars," Danny said. "How's that going to break you?" With this the father got hot under the collar and shouted, "Get it through your thick skull - I can't afford it." "That's when he said he hated me," the father later recalled, "and said he was going to leave home." "Danny, that's real gratitude! Mount Lildon Women's Institute The November meeting of Mount Lildon W.I. was held at the home of the president, June Stewart, November 21. Sixteen members were present. The roll call, "An international event of the past year" was answered by recalling the Olympic Winter Games, the Korean Summer Olympics, the Air Force Pilots Reunion in Winnipeg in September; visits from Royalty, Prince Andrew and later Princess Margaret to Eastern Canada; the rescue of the whales, etc. The committees gave their reports, followed by correspondence which included the new date for the Rosewood Lodge bake and craft sale, December 1, Thursday, 2-4 p.m. Thank you letters from 4-H leaders for our recent donation; from Telebridge and the Cancer Society re their annual meetings. Our members brought in Christmas gifts for the mentally handicapped. Voting for board members for 1989 took place. The following were elected to the 1989 board: Mrs. C. M. Stewart, Mrs. C. H. Turbett, Mrs. J. Munro, Mrs. R. T. Comrie, Mrs. R. J. Stewart, Mrs. R. J. Hamill, Mrs. A. J. Oatway, Mrs. C. D. McClure, Mrs. L. Neabel. Our thanks to Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Blowers who a t t e n d e d and acted as scrutineers. The December meeting and Christmas party will be held December 14 at the Gordon home of Mrs. E. Morrison at 1:30 p.m. Stonewall Pastoral Charge I gave you a name and everything else you ever wanted - you're an ungrateful brat and if you want to leave - there's the door." "I could have ripped out my tongue right after I said it but it was too late." The shocked expression on Danny's face indicated he was close to tears and he took off upstairs. He didn't come down for supper and the next morning he was gone with clothes in a suitcase. When he didn't return that night, the parents phoned all his buddies. But no one had seen him, so they called the police, who put out an A.P.B. Forty three days later the police came to the door and said, "We've located your son." "Where is he?" the overjoyed parents asked. "At St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. He was shot during a holdup." Immediately they got on a plane headed for Toronto and went to the hospital. There they found out that Danny had been in a drugstore just as it was being held up and was innocently shot in the abdomen and the head and was now on the critical list. They went into his room where he lay with eyes closed and breathing very shallowly with his head in bandages, tubes in his nose and arms and wire from his chest. At that point Danny's father prayed, "Dear God, it took a tragedy to show me the things I've done wrong, but please god don't punish Danny for my mistakes. If someone has to die, Roman Catholic Sunday Masses then let it be me, not Danny. Let Danny live God. I love him so much - please God, please." With that Danny awoke, opened his eyes and said, "Dad, I love you." Then he went back to sleep. Three hours later Danny died. Danny's father concluded with this statement: "But I believe that God did perform a miracle. Not the one I prayed for but when Danny opened his eyes and looked into mine I felt we were looking into each other's souls and when he said, "Dad, I love you" I knew he'd forgiven me." "I hope that someday I might be able to forgive myself." Parents, love your children. See them as being the most precious gifts to you. Don't wait until a tragedy before you realize how precious they are. Pastoral Charge United Church Rev.
