Domain

Classification
Goals:
I can list the taxonomic classification levels in
order
I can list the currently recognized domains and
kingdoms
I can differentiate between prokaryotic &
eukaryotic, multicellular & unicellular, heterotroph
& autotroph, asexual & sexual reproduction
I can classify an organism into a kingdom based
on given characteristics
Taxonomic Classification
• Domain – broadest, includes ALL organisms
• Species - most specific, includes 1 kind

Domain
• All living things are classified into a Domain
• There are 3 currently recognized Domains
• Archaea (Archaebacteria)
• Bacteria (Eubacteria)
• Eukaryota
Kingdoms
• There are currently 6 kingdoms
Archae (Archaebacteria)
Bacteria (Eubacteria)
Fungi
Protista (Protist)
Plants (Plantae)
Animals (Animalia)
Kingdoms
• 4 main characteristics are used to classify
organisms into kingdoms
–Type of cell (prokaryotic or eukaryotic)
–Number of cells (unicellular or multicellular)
–Food source (autotrophic or heterotrophic)
–Mode of reproduction (sexual or asexual)
Prokaryotic
• Pro means NO
• No nucleus
Eukaryotic
• Has a nucleus
• You have a nucleus
and are Eukaryotic
Unicellular
• 1-celled organism
Multicellular
• Organisms with
more than 1 cell
Autotrophs
• Make their own energy
(food) through
photosynthesis
Heterotrophs
• Eat other
organisms to get
energy
Asexual
Reproduction
• 1 parent
• Uniform offspring
Sexual
Reproduction
• Male & Female
• Diverse offspring
Most Asexual,
some Sexual
Need to Know
Decomposers,
some cause
disease
extreme
environments,
old bacteria
Tiny organisms,
cannot be
classified as fungi,
plants, or animals
(leftovers)
mushrooms,
molds, and
mildew

Most can
move for at
least part of

Task
Given a partial list of characterists, you should be
able to……
• Identify the Domain of each organism
• Identify the Kingdom of each organism
• List characteristics that the organism should have
Example Organism 1
• Eukaryotic
• Autotrophic
• Sexual
Answer
Domain: Eukarya
Kingdom: Plants
Characteristics:
Multicellular
Example Organism 2
• Unicellular
• Asexual
• Decomposer
Answer
Domain: Bacteria
Kingdom: Bacteria
Characteristics:
Prokaryotic, Autotroph or
Heterotroph
